Sorry to sort of necromance a dead thread, but I have one more question...stealth related...Big Guns ovbviously make a lot of noise, and some people have said that Small Guns are they way to go, but what about energy weapons?

I tried making a melee based character once. But I kept getting tempted for small guns every time.

But now I got power armor at the start thanks to the glitch. Combined with a specialization in energy weapons. Its working out pretty well. If things get too tough for my laser pistol ill just whip out the plasma rifle you also get in the citadel.

Oh and details on the glitch:
The power armor glitch allows you to learn wearing power armor anytime you like by falling through a piece of landscape and entering the citadel early by walking under the map. When you enter the citadel, the game thinks your at the chapter where your going to attack the purifyer with Liberty Prime, so everyone is friendly to you. Even though outside they will treat you like an outsider.

Just talk to the guy that teaches it, and he will tell you to ask Elder Lyons etc. You can also find a suit of power armor and a plasma rifle in the armory and lab. When you leave the citadel, the game continues as usual. only the main gate is still closed, but you can fast travel to bypass that.

Look for detailed videos on youtube.

Hey,
I just recently got a 360, and Fallout 3 along with it, and just wanted to know how YOU guys play the game. I read in the manual how each of the stats is strongly tied to a specific...skill. By playstyle I mean it seems as if I'll have to plan what I want to focus on now, or do the skill points you allocate as a baby really make that much difference? Sorry If im being confusing, but it boils down to 2 things.

a) Should I play the game stealth focused, with perks orientated to small arms and rifles?

b) I liked the look of the "Rock-It Launcher" and coupled with some power armour, what would that be like?

I know its all down to personal choice, I just wanted to know how effective each of those would be, pros and cons etc, as I know I can't have both as I obviously big guns make big noise :p

Regards
Stealth and small guns is great but it makes the game easy. It will give you a chance to explore more.

Focus on Speech, Science, Medicine, and Small Weapons (maybe a little Lockpick) and that will get you through most of the game. Stealth is useless, as is Melee and Energy Weapons. In terms of SPECIAL, focus on your Intelligence and Charisma - while lowering your Perception to about 2 or 3 (trust me, you use your natural eyes for the entire game; the in-game Perception is such BS). Over time, add on to Strength and Agility. That sure cover it; just remember: Fallout 3 is not a game - it is an experience. Enjoy!

I went for stealth from the word go. I picked up the Chinese Stealth Armour as soon as I could and put all my points on Energy Weapons, Lockpick, Sneak, Science, Repair and Small Guns. And all the perks went to helping out my V.A.T.S. i.e choosing Action Boy, Grim Reapers Sprint, etc. So using the Wazer Wifle as my main weapon, the Victory Rifle for sniping, and Lincoln's Repeater for taking out Death Claws (all it needs is one head shot from a fully repaired, Better-Criticals aided Repeater and the Death Claw goes down in one). With that combo I haven't had any real scares out in the Wasteland - or anywhere else for that matter.

Edit: Why are there so many people who have put points onto Speech? That's why there's a quicksave/quickload button, so you can just cheat give your self more points to spend on other skills. Personally I only started putting points onto Speech when all the other (in my opinion, more useful) perks were maxed out.

I would pick whatever weapon seems most interesting, and choose your stats and perks accordingly, I have an energy weapon character with high luck and perception, and a big guns character with high endurance.

Usually high damage with small guns and melee, and high AP, but low health and endurance. So that usually involves stealth attacks as well.

I had small guns, lockpicking and energy weapons all on a hundred. My big guns skill was on 65. I was an all rounder, I could snipe someone or chew them pieces with "Vengeance", but I find having small guns as high as possible as quick as possible very helpful.

i have it for the ps3 ,will get it for the 360 soon and the dlc too , but when i first played fallout 3 i was figuring out the game but then i played once good ,once bad i found playing like a prick got my mood up , playing stealth is pointless , three trophies away from a platinum trophy , the talk one is a pain ,but the most important thing to play fallout 3 to the max is get the strategy guide , not to cheat but because theres so much stuff to do in the wastes

Many, First ply through, I play like I think I would act

Second, I played a dumb, strong, drunk mini-gun/Gatling laser wielding maniac, random choices for dialogue options! (except karma effecting ones) also lots of fist fights with towns people, really good fun!

Third time, a incredibly smart, sinister, vicious, stealthy woman, lied all the time, spoke Moria out of writing her guide, lots of bad karma, lots of caps, again lots of fun.

Repair is brilliant. as you find doubles of everything so all you do is repair the weapons togeather then either use them to higher effect or sell them on for more.

I picked:
small guns
repair
lockpick(alot)
science.

There are a load of random places to find like oasis, which was abit fucked up. just have fun!!

big guns just annoyed me as you mainly have to rely on the splash damage of the mini nukes and the minigun clips are too small and weak.

If you have Operation Anchorage you'll get armor that will make sneaking easier. As for me I tend to go as a Commando type character with Energy Weapons as they seem pretty durable or go with high power small arms like Lincoln's Repeater (or as I call it "LINCOLN'S REVENGE!!!" yes, you have to yell it) or Chinese Assault Rifle, the latter having a very abundant ammo type. A really useful perk for me was Grim Reaper's Sprint, as it allows you to have a huge reserve of Action Points as well as the Finesse and Better Criticals and Concentrated Fire and Sniper perks. I also liked the Treasure finder perk and Mysterious Stranger (who looks like my dad in a trench coat and had) is endlessly entertaining and works in the knick of time in some cases.

EDIT: Oh and as of today I have 8 skills at 100, and everything but unarmed is above 50, hooray for overpoweredness!

I fixed your post for you, sort of.

I'm kind of feeling like all the points I put into Speech were wasted. I've only used it successfully a few times, and I got bad Karma for lying. Obviously, my initial plan to make a stealthy, beatific diplomat was extremely flawed.

Dude max you intelligence to 10 so you can jack your skills quickly, other than that if you like to use VATS put a good amount of points in agility, as well as 4-6 point in strength so you can carry a good amount of swag.
