its quite obvious that because of the super radiated atmosphere of the new earth, that water no longer exists only water vapour so you think he/she is swiming but he/she is actually flying. =]

Think Assassin's Creed.

Fairly simple question, in Fallout 3, your character pretty much leaves the vault and goes into the world. In that world, he runs, jumps, and... swims? how does the character in Fallout 3 know how to swim, they make no mention of a swimming pool in any of the vaults, and you are not born with the natural talent, so how does the Vault-Dweller know how to swim like a fish?
I never thought of that. Gives metal

Think Assassin's Creed.
Thats what I thought off. Games that kill you as soon as you hit water are just more annoying than fun.

They have books that teach you how to handle a gatling laser, sneak like a chinese commando, hack a computer like there's no tomorrow. What makes you think there's no books about swimming?
There's only so much you can really learn from reading a book. Unless he learned how to swim himself, he wouldn't be very competent at it.

I'm still wondering how he's able to dress and undress with that big Pip Boy 3000 on his arm. It would be like wearing a cast on your arm and trying to dress yourself. It kind of restricts what you can wear.

To answer your question, he shouldn't know how to swim, but it's something that can be learned, like power armor training. But he should have had some small quest from Moria on learning how to swim like power armor training.
Then again, with all the mirelurks and radiation, I'm not sure who really goes swimming in the capital wasteland.

If you remember the quests inside the Vault you would remember that half the doors were locked so there was probably a swimming room in one of them.

Because it's a game...

It seems stranger to me that sticking a needle in your ass will heal damage from a direct hit from a missile launcher...

Wonderful world of video games!

Hey in Gears of War does it show you learning how to use a chainsaw in boot camp? Well how in the heck does he know how to use one!?
It's a pullchain which you start. . . Then stick into your enemy to cause instant death/gore. How hard can it be ?

And on this, he probally learned really really fast: learn to survive in the wild, or die trying, though the power armor makes no sense.

James dropped him in the water around the Jefferson Memorial at some time after the Lone Wanderer's birth, and the radiation caused him to mutate to the point where he developed a natural ability to swim?

I guess the Vault-Dweller is just a quick learner.
Maybe He/She has the 'Swift Learner' perk?

Fallout 3 is also set in the future, so maybe evolution has given humans the ability to swim naturaly without having to learn, or perhaps over-exposure to radiation has created some kind of 'swimming gene'?

Another point...The Vault-Dweller wasn't actually born in Vault 101, so maybe he had 'aquatic experience' before leaving the Vault.
I thought of that, but he went into the vault when he was a toddler, we know this because we were babies in the beggining of the game in the Vault, nto to mention all the water is irradiated, you think irradiation wouldn't kill a toddler?

Because if they didn't program it that way, it would be LOTR:Conquest, and that would suck.

Allow me to demonstrate:
