Depends on the system, if pc go for it. Bethesda is releasing DLC along with the editor. Since the fallout series has one of the most dedicated followings and the people who previously modded oblivion/morrowind have already shown their skill, we are obviously going to be receiving a ridiculous amount of mods in the near future.
The thread would be more useful if it were edited a little- change the title and the OP to reflect limited cash, etc.

Well, Fallout is free at Gametap and Fallout 2 is around $6 at GoG, so I think that would be a much better purchase.

IMO Fallout 3 is frickin' sweet! Great single player game, lots of replay value, especially if you like turning evil!

Comes down to what style of game you prefer, and whether or not you want to spend the $.
If you've played the original Fallout (as GenHellspawn said, available free) and/all Fallout 2, then combine that with Oblivion and you (more or less) have the basic idea of Fallout 3.
If not, go play Fallout, then, if you want to own it, find a friend/family member who can't figure out what to get you for Christmas

Then Fallout 3 is not for you. Too much dialouge and too many RPG elements, plus no online play. If you are OK with those things, yes it is a good game, but gets old quickly. I am near the end of only my third game, and I am about to sell it.Daunter said:
If you're just looking for a shooter, BioShock or Resistance would probably be better bets. Fallout 3 is primarily a role-playing game with shooter elements in its combat system... you could play it as a pure shooter, but I think it wouldn't hold up as well as a shooter compared to a game built to be a pure shooter. Most especially, there can be long stretches of the game without combat while exploring the maps or interacting with non-player characters.
If you're interested in the RPG angle, though, Fallout 3 would be an excellent purchase as it has tons of role-playing content. There's still missions I haven't done, and I've been playing it for over 120 hours according to the game-save system.

Fallout 3 isn't really your typical FPS - it's an RPG with FPS elements and if you try and play it like a run and gun shooter you'll be disappointed. Great game, don't get me wrong: it just might not give you the experience you're looking for.
If you want some solid and fast-paced FPS action, pick up Resistance. It's a couple of years old now so you can get it on the cheap.
Alternatively if you don't have a 360 and just got your PS3 then you won't have played Call of Duty 4. That's a must-have title for anyone who likes FPS games, even if you haven't played a Call of Duty title before.
