The Vault [http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_Wiki] pretty much covers everything...

The most important bit for me: Don't put any Stat at 10 at the beginning. 9 is the maximum. You can find hidden collectibles that raise your stats by 1 each, so if you put it at 10 they will be wasted.

My tip:

If your going to blow up Megaton, make sure to collect the bobble-head first. I learned that the hard way.

Eat all the 'Strange Meat' you can find!

Its really good.

Mod Edit: After all the warnings that the mods have given you about you pimping your "strange meat", I'm going to have to drop the hammer this time. We all know what this "strange meat" is that you are talking about. It's your penis, we get it. Ha ha. Permabanned. -Kuliani

Never thought of that.
I never blow up Megaton anyway, I will gladly kill any main character and take evil ends to side quests except blowing up Megaton for some reason

Don't ever get the instant-level perk. Levelling is quick and easy and all you're doing is speeding it up for one level instead of having something useful.

Dogmeat's dogmeat is super tasty

OT: I found that putting quiet a few points into repair can help you get a large amount of cap relitivly quickly.

Take a very good look around Vault 101 before you leave, you can quite a bit of healing items and pretty decent starter armour if you take the time to look. Also take the bobble-head in your dad's office before venturing out. I don't think it's there anymore afterwards.

Otherwise, pay attention to any new radio stations and immediatly listen to them, t are often side-quests.

Oh, and don't go to Point Lookout from the start, I did that and was killed immediatly. Though bastards over there.

Look, we all know the dangers of radiation. But a few simple precautions can help prevent accidental death or...eeeeugh, ghoulification. Check those Geiger Counters, kiddies. Tick-tick-tickity means run your ass out of there, then pop some Rad-Away for good measure. If you need to head into the heat, be prepared. Take a big boost of Rad-X first. Remember children, only you can prevent human flesh fires.

Three Dog. Galaxy News. All you need to know. And now, some music.
Hey everybody, did the news get around about a guy named Butcher Pete?

Collect irons. Later in the game, there is a shortage of pressed shirts and irons become very valuable.

And Teddy Bears.

Okay that's not true. But this is, save Nuka Cola Quantum and don't drink it. First time I played I sold some of the Quantums for caps. There's a limited number in the game, and you'll need them later.

In one of the first side quests you have to go to a grocery store an find food and medical supplies. If you find the food, leave, return, get the medical supplies and then go back to the quest giver the game won't register that you got the medical supplies even when drop them in front of the quest giver.
