If you liked Far Cry 2, you'll hate this game.
Far Cry 2 was much more point-n-shoot than Fallout 3 was.

My suggestion is to launch gratuitous amounts of mini-nukes off of Tenpenny Tower to kill all the guards below. That always entertains me.
I rather liked killing Tenpenny himself taking his fancy gun then killing the gaurds below. Or killing him from great distances. Or throwing him off... I guess I just like killing Tenpenny.

I think you might be having the same problem I was...expecting awesome loot everywhere.
That really killed Fallout for me, until I started to enjoy actually playing it.

Oh, and what do you have it for?
I have it because I was told it was good, Deus Ex like, but it isn't, too much reliance on VATS and without it your fucking useless.
Oh, you thought I meant...heh.
What I meant was, what platform do you have it for?
PS3, and the platform its on is my drawers.

Hahaha, whaaatt?

No offense but Fallout 3 has horrible horrible dialogue and a rather poor excuse for a story.

edit:

I don't blame you for not enjoying the game. I myself haven't managed to rally the strength to actually play it through. Don't follow the main quest though. Better stuff to see elsewhere.

The game doesn't start until you stop blindly following your main quest and get out there and explore. There's a huge world with tons of great stuff to find. It's like Oblivion, only instead of being dull and bland Fallout 3 has an interesting world to explore. If you're just sticking to the main quest then you're doing it wrong.

If you don't like it, you should probably just stop wasting your time. It's just a game. If you aren't having fun, then what's the point. Do something else or find a different game, is my advice.

Yes, that game has a terrific atmosphere and has great areas and gameplay. Search around a little more, play at your own pace.

Also, Far Cry 2? I hatehatehatehatehatehatehate that game.
Yes, Yes and yes to all 3 of your points.

I played Far Cry 2 after Fallout 3 and found it too similar to F3 and gave up after 30minutes.

Well, I beg to differ. But my expectations are coloured by Oblivion's "Have you seen any mudcrabs lately?" diaogue.

I think part of the problem is that before the game was released, the videos and screenshots did make it look like a futurustic FPS, whereas its a RPG with some guns in.

The Fallout series was always more about the setting than the story. It always had an immersive and interesting world. So I never understood the logic in Bethesda continuing the series, after all, they're just about the worst developers when it comes to creating an immersive and interesting world. Their RPG's feel like MMO's without any other players.

Also, does anyone remember that old article on the Escapist detailing why Fallout 3 just didn't click with a lot of people? According to the article it was because the game lacked much in the way of loot. You fired 50 shotgun rounds to clear out a cave only to be rewarded with 45 shotgun rounds and a bottle of whiskey.

It's the apocalypse and they are stuck in a perpetually dark and dreary setting because a colour bomb stole all of the colours.

They need to get drunk.

Well... Fallout 3 alone is nothing more than average.

However the expansions is what is fun about it.

Ummm... You really, really need to explore the Capital Wasteland more, because without the Broken Steel DLC, once you finish the main quest, it's game over, and if you don't just wander around, you'll be missing 99.9% of the content.

EDIT: The PC version of the game is best version for one and only one reason: MODS!!!!

If you never feel the urge to randomly explore stuff, then you missed the point of the open world map. If your not enjoying it at this point then it's probably not for you.

I always switch between main quest missions and wandering the wasteland I might wander a while then do a side quest or two then maybe a main quest then wander some more.

You may need to restart, you could have part of your "SPECIAL" too low, that can really hinder the game. Or, go walk about. Do some side quests, get some cool armour (T51-B as soon as you get training) and a good weapon, i would recomend the lincoln repeater, xaulong rifle or, if you are feeling very very VERY brave, Vengance!

(I feel that Vengance! Should be spelt with a blood red 50ft tall 'V')

If you go in with the right mindset, you will be rewarded. You can't tackle it the same way you would farcry 2, you have to visualise yourself in the game, try to imagine what you would do in that setting. Treat your character like a person, do what it takes to make them survive. That is what fallout 3 is all about.

Definitely the best argument for PC gaming. I must have downloaded 5 mods today, plus I downloaded that archive invalidation invalidated thing so I don't have any texturing problems now.

mods are fun...

Now I'm glad you said that.

I had a response for this all planned out while reading through, and that flows into my response nicely.

I like Fallout 3. I still play it every so often, even though I have the PS3 version and as such am denied mods and DLC, but there is a glaring issue.

I am aware that you need to ignore the main quest to get the most from it.

But.

WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU?

You've spent the first 19 years of your life in a hole in the ground and only three people seemed to give a shit about you. One ran off, another was shot, and the third either pretty much forced you out without even considering coming too or hates you because you killed her father. And the first one of those is your father. He leaves, apparently he's left before (which you learn pretty quickly after leaving the vault), and he NEVER TOLD YOU he was going to leave, nor that he (and even YOU) weren't originally FROM there.

So why the fuck do "I" (meaning my Fallout avatar) want to clear out some nest of giant ants? I want to find my dad! Fuck all the problems, sure if they're on my way I'll help because I'm a nice bloke but I'm not heading off to some random town in the West when I know for a fact my Dad's headed East! I wanna ask this guy quite a lot of questions thank you!

The only way the "Go and do other things" thing makes any sense is if you assume either A) Your father is dead and you must make a new life in the Wasteland or B) you are a sociopath and don't form attachments, not even to a lovely caring bloke who raised you by himself and always showed you nothing but love!

I appreciate that the main quest is painfully short (I even ranted on it myself when I finished it) and the main interest is in the side missions, but it's a Role Playing Game, and if the Lone Wanderer conforms to anything from what's expected of his situation he's going to want to find his Dad above all else. So if you're doing something else... you're not playing him in character!

Oy.

its so long for the whole point of Immersion- it really makes a massive change when you suddenly get thrust into the violent wasteland.
