I'm gonna go on the record and say that Fo4 is gonna have all the same character customization options as Fo3 did, simply because Bethsoft, for all their foibles, is still not Pants-On-Head Retarded and isn't going to go backwards in terms of accessibility, especially not after Ubisoft caught so much flack for not having playable female characters in Unity (and after having a playable female character in Syndicate shut so many of them up.)

. One of my biggest complaints in New Vegas was that the main character was just an empty void.
I wouldn't go that far..there's a difference between a non-voiced character and a completely blank one

EDIT: plus it doesn't help if their default is the most boring chliche thing ever

Also, you can't play Furiosa since it's unlikely you have the choice to replace your left arm with car parts. Though it would actually get me excited for this game if you could.
you know what I meant...

I hope it'll just be your character getting a voice and nothing else of huge note. Mass Effect style conversations where the camera flops about and creates more of a scene would be an improvement over the locked eyes nonsense. And would add the option of conversations involving more than two people.

In a sense all Fallout/TES characters were "set" anyway. Sure you got to modify the hell out of them, but they were the Nerevarine, Vault Dweller, Dragonborn, Lone Wanderer... etc. It's probably the same dealy happening here. He's the 'Cool Vault Duderoo' only he comes with a voice module.

I'm not too fussed about the main character being voiced though I would like to customize him or her, not that it matters anyway. I will likely put on a badass looking helmet at some point and call it a day. That said I had no trouble identifying with my crazy elderly black Saint's Row 2 character with a cockney accent. And it was just as swell in Saint's Row 3 when he had a sex change into a crazy blonde Russian lady.

The Vault Dweller is set as a guy, this is true. But, that's OK.

Because we're not playing as the Vault Dweller...

We're playing as the Dog and, in true fallout form, we'll get to create them from the ground up. Decide Gender, breed, fur color and like always we'll roleplay our decisions by picking from a variety of options. ALthough, granted, most of them are going to be variations on growl, snarl, bark, whimper, hump leg etc etc.

I am curious how combat's gonna work though.

Come on guys, it's like you didn't even watch the trailer!

I honestly doubt it.

Doesn't seem at all in line with the studio and the series. And hell, if it does happen to be true there's going to be a mod for it within a few months.

I know...its just that what I see in the trailer kinda seems to support that stuff I saw before
Bethesda always runs with the generic male protagonist in their promotional material. It was the same with Fallout 3 (and the ending of the trailer heavily mirrors the main promotional image of Fallout 3 with the Vault Dweller walking into the sunset with Dogmeat at his side) and Skyrim (with Iron Armor Guy).

As others have said, Bethesda abandoning character creation is about as likely as them giving up on open world. Both are integral to the games they make.

I guess I'm the only one that saw the trailer and thought you were going to be playing as the dog..

Seriously though, the trailer underwhelmed me pretty hard. I saw nothing in it that couldn't have been DLC for a PS4 port of Fallout 3. I get that there is only so much wiggle room within this canon before it *gasp* strays too far into original content. Unlike the Elder Scrolls, where they can pretty much say "a wizard did it" to retcon everything and zip to the far future or past to get a fresh setting Fallout's timeline is pretty fixed barring time machines.

You aren't going to see much if any pre-nuke gameplay, although the trailer hints possibly at otherwise. You also aren't going to be playing far enough into the future for it to actually be futuristic, the wasteland be fully reclaimed and law & order restored along with pure water. That wouldn't be a Fallout game anymore than a game with murderous Slinkys is going to be the new Twisted Metal.

I mean they did have aliens right? Anything might happen, but from the trailer all I got was more of the same game I already played twice with enough game breaking bugs to fill multiple console generations of games combined.

If we do have to play as the dude in the trailer at least we can look at that booty! DAYUM!

*cough* Sorry.

Anyway, Bethesda always does the same thing that Bioware or Volition do, they give you a pre-made character in the trailers and promotional stuff but you can always create your own when you actually get the game. I highly doubt Bethesda would change the status quo now and if they do I assume they were all drunk and/or high when they made that decision.

Hopefully they show some lady gameplay at E3 or at least confirm that you can make a female character just so we can clear up any doubts on the matter.

Well, here's a thought. They spent ALOT of time in that trailer showing alot of pre-war events... Maybe its a mix. Your wasteland survivor is you, your character, make 'em like always. But maybe there's sequences back before the war where you play as one of your ancestors, who can be static and voiced and all that fine because your exploring his story, not yours. Just a thought.

That supposed reddit "leak" has so many holes in it its baffling anyone would take it seriously.

Hell, its already been proven wrong since they said the game would be revealed at E3.... its not E3 yet.

It also says the game is set 10 years in the future, and that Bryan Wilks is now 19, but he was only 8 in Fallout 3.

It also claims you have a wife named Lydia....... like .... the housecarl from Skyrim? Yeah.... no.

If you read kotaku you have already failed in your researching.
They offer nothing of substance or value only clickbait

They will offer choice of leads like the always have

I guess i'll be the oddman out and say i'd welcome a set protagonist if it leads to a more structures story line.

Common sense tells me that Bethesda wouldn't make people play as a set character in one of their Open-World games after having the choice of gender and appearance after at least 3 other games.

As too that Reddit link, couldn't find(lazy) the kotaku one, there's A few reason I don't believe anything he/she says:

- Talks about PS3/360 version when we now know that won't happen.
- Mentions Vault 79 but not 111.
- Said it would be a E3 June reveal.
- 4 years development and only 40% complete?

Really, I just hope this person wrong, though my first character may be male I really hope I can make a sneaky female like I always do.
Yeah how dare they try something different ! /sarcasm.

The game ends with you fighting the Enclave on their moon base. Source? Fuck sources, this is the internet, who needs 'em?

Anyway male only Player Character? No. Bethesda are stupid at times but they aren't that stupid. The only reason they wouldn't be able to have a female PC is resource limitations and they're Bethesda so that won't be an issue. Having a voiced PC is something I'm a bit meh on, they better not do the Mass Effect dialogue wheel. The Fallout game that was least open in your backstory was Fallout 3 so Bethesda giving you a more set background wouldn't surprise me.

I'm curious as to how getting sued by Zenimax for breaking an NDA would count as "revenge."

Well I do guess a "shepard" works better in a fully voiced game than "random guy whose name shall never be uttered because we can't text to speech yet".

Unless they decide to use the text-to-speech they use in that lunar lander game.

I don't think there was any discussion about this when they showed a shouting man in the original Skyrim trailer.

You get robotosized and be able to back sonic waves at raiders. Or you gain bionic legs and plasma teeth to pounce on death claws. Or you get laser vision. Or laser peeing.

I'm hoping for becoming a were-deathclaw myself. Actually, I'm hoping we can roleplay as a Ghoul this time. At the very least, maybe a customisation option? Or being able to look down the barrel of a plasma rifle to get that "Harvey Dent Two-face" look.

No, it won't be. In fact, since it's Bethesda, i'm willing to bet on that. With bottlecaps money, yes.
The only way i can see that being pulled off is having a set character during these pre-war shots, most likely in the tutorial before being asked to pick your own.

Oh, and i don't know why PC being voiced or not changes anything here. Mass Effect anyone?

Even if the main character is fully voice acted, which I doubt because Bethesda, that doesn't matter at all to the character's customization.

Wasn't the leak from 2013 debunked at some point?
