Remember, Bethesda: drivable cars. Let me and my companion(s) of choice go on a post-apocalyptic road trip with a trunk full of loot.
Fallouts 2 and Tactics are your friends in this.

OT: Cautiously optimistic as ever with Bethesda. Hoping they keep in Obsidian's 'Survival Mode' (I flat out refuse to call it Hardcore Mode) as it added so much to the play and feel of New Vegas. Really looking forward to seeing the Commonwealth hinted at in 3, but I'd much rather Bethesda did what it sounds like they're doing - taking their time and doing it thoroughly rather than rushing out a half-arsed version to catch the new console gen.
I did like that aspect of Fallout: New Vegas and Sawyer's mod for the game was fun as well. I have made a few tweaks myself over the time, but I am hoping they make a few more changes to the game so it doesn't feel as much like Elder Scrolls with a Fallout Skin for that is how Fallout 3 and to a lesser extend Fallout New Vegas felt to me.
I see what you mean. Fallout 3, whilst a very enjoyable RPG, didn't wear it's Fallout heritage particularly comfortably. New Vegas made many steps in the right direction, but being based on that engine it was never going to be flawless.

Anyway, I still hold by this: let Obsidian do the story and characters, let Bethesda do the environment and setting, and both join together to do the gameplay. Either we'll get pure gold, or the buggiest game known to humanity.
No no no. Let Obsidian do everything. They're much superior to Bethesda when it comes to making enviroments and settings.

This video explains why: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvwlt4FqmS0

Let Bethesda create the mod tools, it's what they're really good at.

Not really. I want that /and/ the First Person Role Playing Game, not one or the other.

Yeah, Survival Mode was a good addition to New Vegas. Weather effects and built-in support for longer days would be nice too.

It could be cool to see vehicles back in a newer Fallout game, but it's have to be scaled just right. Too much emphasis on the vehicles would create maps that are a chore to traverse on foot, and too much emphasis on scaling the maps for wanderers would make vehicles almost useless - think Borderlands and Halo. A few vehicles would help a future Fallout game retain it's Mad Max roots, but too many would spoil it. Fallout 2 knew this, which is why there was only one operating car in the entire game.

I remember the first time I was playing the Honest Hearts DLC and it started raining. I couldn't quite believe it. Definitely a nice change from the monotony of relentless sun, and one reason why quite a few of my characters spend an inordinate amount of time in Zion.

Ideally, you'd have some places that are best reached on foot - places where the roads aren't very good, where raiders are guarding the road or where you'd have to drive off-road and risk damaging the car - and some that are best reached by car - distant places and places where you'd want a lot of carrying capacity.
