A better and more realistic combat system that ISN'T VATS. It's rather anti-climatic when two guys rush at each other and just stop moving and fire some shots into each other while they both stand completely still untill onne guy falls down.

As much as hate to admit it, Fallout 3 did give me the occasional Oblivion deja vu. So, I think they should do a few things to differentiate Fallout 4 from Oblivion that affect its quality. Like making the PC-NPC, and NPC-NPC interactions more dynamic, improve stability and overall performance, make the story less linear so that it can better fit the "open-world" aspect. Granted, there was more role-playing to be done in Fallout 3 than there was in Oblivion, but they could have done more with it. Set it in London, Paris, Rome, Venice, Chicago, or any combination of the above. Come up with easier to use modding tools. Since they will most likely continue using the "everything levels up as you do" system, they should do whatever they can to make it more sensible, and on the whole, more consistent. And as Yahtzee pointed out, if you are going to use talented big-name actors, then you need to make the most of the talent while you've got it. Put in mission types for everyone (they did this in Oblivion, and this was one of the few features of that game that I actually liked, a feature that was lacking in Fallout 3), assassination/theft missions for sneaky bastards, run 'n gun missions for gun-lovers, and so on. Another thing they may want to consider during character creation is selecting one of a few backgrounds like say, the typical vault-dweller, a waste-lander, a merc, a member/former member of the Enclave/Brotherhood of Steel, and so on.

Straight FPS combat. No more of this VATS BS. Oh yeah, and also a way to keep playing after you finish the main quest.

Less Oblivion, more Fallout. That's all.
As in... No Level Scaling, More Dark Humor, Bigger Focus on Dialogue and a better and more well thought out story?
I'm all for that. How about cars we can drive, too? Ooh! Maybe there could also be another faction (i.e. none of the fallout 3 if you aren't with the BoS, you're with the Enclave, if not, you're a raider, if not, you're a wastelander, but you can only play BoS.) and they could smudge the line between good and evil slightly more.

I want more fps. Like COD4, kinda, where both you and the enemies die realisticly(exeptions being the super powerful beasts, like the behemoths and such), iron sights and a "take cover or die" feel to it. That would make survival a lot harder, and up the "omg only 1 stimpack, oh shit, oh shit" feel. Other than that(and Dogmeats constant deaths) the game was perfect.
and here's the problem with fallout today

hmmm never played the old ones but I see what you're getting at.

I prefer my rpgs slow paced and immersive, if i want call of duty i'll play call of duty. but when I'm playing an rpg... just let me explore at my own pace!

you're hardly going to stand there admiring a stunning vista if you could be one shot killed by a lurking sniper at any second.

next they'll be wanting multiplayer for fallout...

The fact that so many NPCs clipped through so many objects so many times drove me nuts.

One instance stands out in my mind: when I led the scientists back into the Jefferson Memorial, I remember watching as every single one of them either leapt two feet into the air and juddered over a threshold, or clipped right through the doorframe. Graphical issues of that nature absolutely shattered the immersion for me.

I really would have liked iron sights. That would have saved me alot of swearing. If its going to be a 3D action-RPG it may as well adopt at least the basic aspects of an FPS. Also weaponsmithing would be nice, being able to make a weapon your own by tearing other weapons apart and adding bits together to make an altogether better weapon. It would open up a whole new market of add on bits too, scopes, silencers, rails, grips etc... including the extremes of the Fallout universe, so ultimately a 6 barreled uranium pellet firing auto shotgun hyrbid granade launcher.

Better story, and better NPC interaction. If they could make the story almost 100% diplomatic able, then that'd be awesome and I'd hug them.

Co-Op would be awesome! Scouring the wasteland with a friend would make for hundreds of hours of amusing times. Friendly fire optional o_O

If they are going to make an open, and truly free game then the ability to kill children shouldn't be withdrawn. They are limiting the games choices and restricting you morally, which defeats the purpose of the personal moral dictation. Old Fallout games (however not there European counterparts) had the ability to kill children, it doesn't scar you and make you a raving sociopath, because most people can define reality and games. If they are squemish about brains and goo coming from a 10 year olds head, just de-gore them, have them slump dead.

Stealth kills with a knife would be nice to see. Oh and finally!!

BLOWING DOWN DOORS! C4! This is vital, I missed it terribly! Wheres the logic in a rocket not blowing down a sheet of metal or a wooden door? I want to see my physicist!

All but Li and the assistant dissapeared when I hacked the door terminal before Li. They just ceased to exist. I think that whole bit it glitchy.

I would love to see some of the things that have been happening already thanks to modders (Enclave Commander stands out in my mind). Many of the mods are fun additions and if Bethesda were to work them in and cause them all to work properly together I would love that.

I would reallly like if they actually made a logical ending
eg not making you die of radiation when 3 of your companions are rad-immune

Okay, for all those bringing up mods which fix the game, they shouldn't HAVE TO. Bethesda should fucking make the game the RIGHT WAY, rather than depending on skilled freelance modders to do their work for them! And Fallout 3 isn't PC exclusive, so the Console gamers are pretty much screwed if THEY buy the game! Stop making excuses for Bethesda and accept the fact just because Modders are nice enough to fix the game doesn't mean that Bethesda did a good job. Their best move was releasing the damn construction set to the public.

(This isn't directed at people who compliment the mod community, it's directed at the people who make excuses for Bethesda BECAUSE of the modding community.)

Also, even if the game isn't set there, please tell me how England is doing. Tenpenny is from there, so we know it's not deserted.

While this is an oft-abused gameplay element nowadays, Fallout 3 really could've used some sort of cover mechanic. I mean, it already had that practically pointless third-person perspective as it did in previous Bethesda games; they might as well have done something with it. Besides, it's a great game for it. If you consider the following: walls, refrigerators, cars, rubble, lampposts, shelfs, desks, trees stumps, tables, fences, bodies, boulders, and more, it would add another layer to the already good combat system. Taking the cover, you'd switch to third-person, then be able to use zoom to come out from behind cover and aim, and you would still be able to use VATS. It'd be great in open-area situations.

A lot less bugs, vehicles, snipers that work, less bugs, more dark humor, setting in New York or another large city (London or Tokyo?), and new weapons.

And less bugs.

1). Remove unimportant puzzles that could be solved either by Science or Lockpick. If you need to get through it, then sure. Also, re-enable blowing up doors with mines/grenades, for those of us who are manly.

2). What someone said: Expand dialogue trees.

3). Change the dialogue periodically through the game. I hate wandering into Megaton after spending months of game time in the wastes doing shit, just to have Lucas Simms say the same crap to me.
--> Maybe generate new random quests periodically? Like Lucas has you take out the raiders in the School, or break up a bar fight, etc.

I like to feel like I've done something or affected something---without having to blow the town sky high.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Oh, and someone said multiplayer would suck, but I thought the limb crippling system, sneak + pants exploding system and weapons could lend themselves to some REALLY interesting multiplayer modes. Maybe like a more detailed COD5, choose a set of Multiplayer perks, distrubute SPECIAL points, etc.

Heresy, I know.

All I want to see is colors in the damn game. I'm not saying that it should look like i shat rainbows all over the place but they could at least make it so I don't have to turn the brightness all the way up just to see where I'm going.
