So yeah, Fallout 76 itself is pretty bad, being riddled with bugs and glitches. Even when the game works normally, the core gameplay has been watered down and the lore that everyone's been familiar with has been retconned. For the past few days, there was the whole lawsuit debacle.

But now the switch has been cranked to 11; Behold the collector's edition debacle. For those of you who don't know, Bethesda promised, among other things, a nice-looking canvas west tek duffle bag for $200 collector's edition. However, what the players have been getting was a cheap thing-nylon.

These are Bethesda's responses:

TL;DR
"Yeah, what you see is a prototype and it was too expnsive to make. Deal with it and please still enjoy our garbage game, LOL. Have a nice day"

Because of "once-open-no-retturn" policy, no one is able to get their $200 back. To nail the coffin which is in a grave they dug themselves, this was the damamge control Bethesda decided to come up with:

https://twitter.com/Fallout/status/1067981880597843968?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet

Yep. 500 atoms, the $5 premium currency. FIVE. FUCKING. DOLLARS. They made fans spend $200 just to bait and switch shit that will be in the collection, and all they can offer in return is $5 in microtransaction?! I feel so bad for people who bought collector's edition, nevermind a terrible base game. Holy fukcing shit, it's actually making me sick and angry as I am writing this down. Yes, it's just a duffle bag, but it's the way Bethesda is handling this shitstorm right now.

I am seriously re-considering my support for Bethesda. I mean, yeah, their games weren't perfect and definitely weren't everyone's cup of tea. But the games always have been solid. But to cheat people out of the $200 edition? Does this sound right to you?

Sounds perfectly right to me coming from the company responsible for the likes of Horse Armour, paid mods and Pete Hines. That said, I'm sure as more info on TES6 comes out everyone will go back to loving them.

I am fairly certain that EU consumer laws could force Bethesda to cough up a return, no matter how much they claim to have a "no returns on opened goods"-policy. Since the EU has laws in place that regulates the right to refund on goods not living up to advertisement or product description, which include a right to refund if the product is not made of the material advertisement described. The question is really whether anyone's going to drag Bethesda to court over it.

All in all though, this is an incredibly dick move. It isn't just "worse quality then expected" it is an outright bait and switch. A canvas bag and a nylon bag are two very different things, especially when you're likely to want a canvas bag for its' retro-feel, compared to a more modern (and cheaper feeling) nylon bag. It is the sort of thing you'd expect when you purchase an "Authentic Dolce Gabbana handbag" on Wish for 10 bucks, not from a (previously) respected AAA-game publisher in the US.

On one hand, I'm tempted to say "Big deal. It's a slightly different bag"

However, It does say it's going to be one and not the other and they haven't updated to even reflect the new reality, which is sketchy at best.

The response is not helping and considering Bethesda is already got a lot of people at very least disappointed over the broken mess that FO76 is right now, maybe they shouldn't poke the ant hill any more at this point. They don't have the luxury of benefit of the doubt

The real question is :Is any of this going to matter once Elder scrolls 6 comes out? I personally highly doubt it. BUT at least for me personally, i'm going to wait about a month before picking it up.

With the price people are expected to pay for these editions, you'd expect a higher standard of quality than that of a pound store children's lucky dip bag. That and no fabricated object of much higher quality to fool customers on the purchase page.

That is pretty bad (it's awful, actually). I'd like to see all these premium editions done away with -- they always seems terribly large amounts of money for some low-value shit.

And what's this thing of companies thinking they get to decide on refund eligibility? Pretty sure there's laws on that.

And that bag. Man, that looks so shit. I can see some people making a bit of cash with good quality knock-off Fallout canvas bags on Etsy...

Its one thing to retroactively change your T&S. Its shitty, but I've read its legal. But how is this not blatant false advertising?

Funny how these companies never learn.
I hope people finally learn to stop giving these companies a pass for the bullshit they pull. EA, Activision, Bethesda, all of them. People let their fandoms blind them until they can't possibly justify the product they've been given.

The Non AAA gaming scene ain't that great also.

If I have to put up with one more early access games or a Kickstarter game that fails to meet its expecations let alone comes out at all, sigh. I miss the 90s and 2000s.

I too miss the days of buying a game would get you a full game, including all unlockable secret modes, weapons, costumes, etc.

They should do it in a heartbeat.

Why would they? They barely suffer any consequences of their actions. It's the gamers that are the stupid ones. They always get the short end of the stick and they still don't get it.

At this point I'm kind of wondering how much deeper this rabbit hole is going to go.

In civilized and orderly countries (read: not america) this would be classified as criminal.

This is straight up false advertising and I hope all individuals who were scammed decline anything less than being provided exactly what they paid for.

One would think the amount of rabid backlash from stuff like this across the webisphere might be enough to cause a considerable dent in sales. Perhaps it?s just a very vocal minority though.

The problem on the gamers? side of things is mostly an issue of IP fanaticism, and it?s compounded by the camaraderie and/or competitive nature involved with an online setting. Unpleasantries are easier to overlook in these cases.

Funny how gamers never learn. The next Bethesda game will have plenty of pre-orders and collector editions sold.

...Anyone else reminded of the Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, Collector's Edition?

Anyways, I guess this is one more reason for me to be relieved that I don't bother with collector's editions.

Everything about MvCI plain sucked. Both Marvel and Capcom fucked up on that game.
