So I didn't see a news article here about it, figured i'd share what I woke up to this morning: a cryptic but clear message from the fallout facebook page.

https://www.facebook.com/fallout

"Please Stand By"

what do you think, Fallout 4 confirmed for E3? Fallout MMO? speculate!

EDIT: Official fallout site has a counter, which at the time of posting is at 22 hours and counting down.

I recommend everyone read Miracle of Sound's twitter, this might be one of his last moments on this earth.

As much as I love the Fallout games (one of the few games I have ever preordered), I think I might get more joy about this being an announcement for an HD remake or something altogether disappointing because of how many people are on the edge of their seats for an announcement.

The easiest way to kill me on the inside is if its an announcement for a multiplayer focused Fallout game, especially an MMO. A Fallout 3-esq game with Coop is about all I could take.

Beat me to the thread.

I am excited as all get-out for this. NV was amazing, I can't wait for June 3. On a side note, the Fine Print button at the bottom of http://fallout.bethsoft.com/ confirms a new game, not yet rated, so naysayers talking about Fallout-adjacent work can hush. The only worry is that this is just going to be a pre-trailer to set things up for a full announcement on the 14th.

Also, when you try to share it on social media, this is the attached description: "PA system failure has occurred. Shutdown of the Masterbrain has been authorized and all sensitive materials have been removed for security purposes. Please attempt re-access. Have a pleasant day."

Oh man, so excited. Must have put hundreds of hours into 3, less in NV but still loved it.

Online/Local Co-Op where the second person takes control of a pre-existing companion rather than a totally new person who appears out of the blue? That might work.

I am sure it isn't because Bethsoft doesn't want to be burned to the ground, but HD remakes have to be re-rated so it could be an RP rating for Fallout 3 HD. It wont be but its possible.

In all honesty, I would buy a Fallout 3 HD remake, I have been wanting to play through that game again with all the DLCs and all modded out but just haven't set aside the 100 or so hours that would require.

Just hope to god it isn't some MMO/Multiplayer thing.

YES!

I always loved me some Fallout, and Fallout 3 was a personal favorite. I kind of hope they take us out of the Wasteland, though. Maybe give us a frozen city/tundra. I suspect they won't after Skyrim, though. I suppose L.A, New York, or London would be good too. It would be interesting to see how thew rest of the world fared following the war.

I've thought similar things, but Fallout is so steeped in Americana that changing to a different country would do more harm than good, IMO. The flavour is strong for "50's sci fi by way of apocalypse" and applying that to other countries would change it in ways that might be interesting, but definitely wouldn't be Fallout.

After the backlash against New Vegas I'm worried this game is going to be as shallow as a paddling pool, much like Skyrim.

What backlash against New Vegas?

It took shit for being insanely buggy, and that criticism was merited. Other than that it was quite well loved, and is widely regarded as superior to FO3. It certainly never got pilloried for "depth".

Considering Bethesda are doing this now, it only makes me wonder what they will do for E3?
Well, naturally we would hope for Fallout 4 gameplay.
I'm somewhat doubtful since it could be something else.

Hah, I'm too optimistic.
We have no fucking idea if it is Fallout 4 yet.

Well, I'm sure Bethesda know the risks to this.
Either getting strapped to a Mad Max vehicle or the world enters its own Fallout.
... Oooor we just get very angry.

Still, things are looking somewhat good.
XCOM 2.
This.
And now I'm play a great, new LEGO game. (LEGO Worlds, which is in early access, so it is too soon to say that it is good overall.)

i thought New Vegas was superior in every way but one: the forced Ending. even Fallout 3 did this, but fixed it with Broken Steel, where once you do the last mission that's it, game over man, game over. which is just terrible design in a game as open and huge as fallout.

where New Vegas really shined (shone? shined...) was it's DLC, each being it's own self-contained story, while also lending to the overall narrative of Ulysees and the original courier... brilliant story telling. also, i LOVED hardcore mode, and beat the game in it. it made the wasteland feel that much more inhospitable and dangerous, maintaining your physical needs, while finally acknowledging that carrying 60 missiles and 27 mini nukes might actually weigh you down a bit. seriously, just everything about NV was better. except forcing the game over.

Yeah, he's why I'm kinda hoping that it isn't Fallout 4.

Aside from the bugs people were bashing it for being 'boring'. I remember what my friends (who never played the originals) or the people on the Bethesda Forums said about it. Mostly it just seemed like they were angry it wasn't more Fallout 3. Aside from complaints aimed at Fallout 3 too (like the lack of multiplayer), the most prevalent complaints I can remember were:

That it wasn't about the Brotherhood of Steel and the Enclave again
The reputation system limiting what armour they could wear
The protagonist being a mailman instead of another vault dweller
That you were just dropped in the game instead of being able to live through your character's childhood
There wasn't enough supermutants to kill
There wasn't enough famous landmarks to explore (Which is what Fallout is 'really' about)
That it didn't feel like a post apocalyptic game, despite taking place two hundred odd years after the apocalypse
The level cap meant they couldn't have ridiculously overpowered 'master-of-all' characters
The 'lack' of level scaling meant they couldn't run wherever they wanted without being killed

Oh yeah, and the forced ending.

Probably some more I cant remember. A lot of people just wanted more Fallout 3.

It's possible your friends have over-colored your recollections. I followed the public reception to New Vegas pretty closely, and I do not recall any of these complaints. Literally none of them.

To this day it's a pretty well regarded game, although it maintains a well-earned reputation for being buggy/flaky.

Of course, I wouldn't expect a repeat of New Vegas with FO4 regardless, because Bethesda and Obsidian have a very different design ethos.

Watch it be a HD re-release of 3 and New Vegas as an official kind of the Tale of Two Wastelands mod.

Still, I am both looking forward to it and not. Looking forward to it as Bethesda make great world spaces that are fun to explore, and not because their writing and stories are pretty atrocious, as well as the possibility of dumbing the game down even more.

Oh yes, let's stick to the same old, stale setting instead of trying to spice it up with some new, interesting locales. So exciting! Especially if you're a non-American who's not all that in love with American culture, and one who'd like to see what the rest of the world looks like.

Anyway, not particularly hyped.
You know it's going to be a game designed for consoles with a shitty port to pc, premium mods and drm all over.

Yeah, it's pretty clear this game will mean a comeback for paid mods, whether or not they allow free mods alongside it remains to be seen.
