It is my friends birthday in a week on saturday and we are going for a night on the town dressed as game characters so it seems i have one week to make myself a fallout vault jumpsuit. Too ambitious you think? Well, you may be right. But that does not mean i am not going to try.
So then, do any of you have any kind of advice, little tricks or tips to make costume making easier?
Have you ever attempted to make your own costume? How did it turn out, were you proud of it?

Here is what i am going for, lets just hope i make it XD
I think the hardest things to make will be the shoulder pad and the pip boy 3000 so if any of you have advice on making these i would be much appreciative. Everything else is fairly easy. ( have a feeling that statement is going to come back and bite me in the arse XD)

Go as that One guy with the Sock puppet instead.

As for my own costume experience, I just tend to wear my Purple reaper mask and a long jacket, so I can't help you there, but I can tell you to be ready for Criticism.

Could make the shoulder armour out of cardboard or stiff card cut and curved to suit. Or save yourself some bother and make a 'normal' vault jumpsuit.

Go as your 360 Avatar. Lot cheaper. Lot easier.

OT: I genuinely have no clue how you'd make a Pip Boy, but I am very interested in seeing what you come up with, good luck.

Go as a civilian from Fallout 3 in sexy sleepwear. Save yourself the awkward conversation with the authorities.

I think the problem with this idea is that not many people will recognize it. You will get the satisfaction of making the darn thing while nobody else knows what you were going for. Try going for something that is a little more recognizable.

Personally, I love the idea. If I had the time and energy I'd try making one myself. If you do end up making it for the sheer satisfaction of making in you can always wear it when you play Fallout 3. Along with a hockey mask. ^__^

The criticism shall melt away with alcohol XD

A normal one would be easier, and i think i'm going to make that first, just incase the rest fails.

I'm sorry that I've got nothing to add about costume making but out of curiosity after you've be out for laughs you've got to post which characters pull. I know this sounds weird but this just really reminds me of when I saw a man getting lucky at a local club dressed as Ronald McDonald.

All of us who are going are familiar with the fallout series and as we are the only ones who matter, i think i will be safe enough XD

For this, i was thinking of making it out of a large cardboard tube, using my broken compass with the needle that is stuck in place as the radiation meter and an ipod for the screen. I'm going to paint it myself. Hopefully those games workshop painting skills will prove useful.

You don't neeeeeeed the shoulder pads etc, you could go for the basic jumpsuit. As for the pipboy.... maybe some material around your arm with a strap at each end to fasten it? Maybe put a see-through pocket in it to store your mobile in as a pip-boy screen. Which might i add works brilliantly for iphones.

If you're going for a night on the town, it might not be best to take your iPod out, especially on your arm, very vulnerable. That is assuming it's a 'Go out, get hammered, have 2 day hangover' type of night out.

That is a very good point, i hadn't thought about that. I suppose a sheet of plastic with the health screen thingy underneath it could work just as well.

I went to a fancy dress party dressed as Rimmer from Red Dwarf. I had to make the badges myself, made them on paint, the "RIMMER" badge and the "SECOND TECHNICIAN" badge, then printed them out and glued them to my grey shirt. Bought a grey tie, and some cargo pants, and made the H out of cardboard, put tin foil over it and put sellotape on the back, stuck it to my head. I don't think a lot of people knew who I was meant to be, but the ones who did know who I was said it was a great costume and said I was the most original person there, which made it worth it. So even if most people don't know who you are, a few will, I bet you'll get one or two strangers coming up to you saying how awesome you look. That'll make it worthwhile.
