If you're really finding companions that overpowered, then you must be fighting in the easy area. Good luck taking on Cazador nests and Deathclaws without them.

Also, I never really understood why a scholar would be a hand-to-hand combat expert. Doesn't seem like those two skills would go together well.

Why not just up the difficulty level?

Personally I prefer travelling solo unless I am doing one of the companions quests (which are very good).

Aaand a little off-topic, do you guys travel light, or carry a lot of stuff on you? Especially in hardcore. I know I usually drag an arsenal with me, which chews up almost all carry capacity.
In Fallout I tend to carry a "realistic" amount:

Light armour.
Bottles of water and stimpacks.
Tools needed to do things (repair kits, lockpicks etc.)
A main weapon (rifle).
A support weapon (shotgun).
A side-arm (pistol).

Nothing else. If I pick up anything else it is with the intention of selling it at the next place I come across with a trader.

Well, Cass starts with no armor (her clothes provide no DT) and a caravan shotgun. Try her out?

I tended to use Raul, since I liked his ability to slow the degradation of items

and because Danny Trejo is a badass

Turn up the difficulty or install some mods. Or let her go. Geez this is really easy to fix yourself.

I've recently purchased F:NV and started my playthrough on Very hard (Hardcore) difficulty.
Reading sure is hard, huh?
Hmm, not sure how I missed that sentence.

Assuming that is the case, I can't see how what they are saying is true unless they are doing at least one of these things:

Avoiding all cazadores, deathclaws and assassins (Legion/NCR).
Deliberately getting her to stay back while dealing with tough enemies by sniping them or stealth killing them (or other low risk methods).
Re-loading each time she dies.
Giving her the best equipment possible and tons of stimpacks.

While Veronica is pretty damn good in close combat, even on the normal difficulty with hardcore activated, she dies pretty easily.

I run hardcore with Project Nevada, just for a starting point on how much weight I get (my Strength is usually 5-6)

I actually carry very little in terms of guns, but I tend to overstock in the meds/food department, that and misc shit I pick up. I love the Mark 2.4 Sneaky Suit from OWB, especially since sneaking is stupidly difficult to pull off in Project Nevada, even with Stealth Boys, and for guns I run Christine's COS rifle (unless I'm not there yet, then Ratslayer), a silenced .45 Auto and a recharger pistol. I also tend to carry a shitton of ammo crafting material so I never run out, and it's usually lighter than the ammo itself. Other than that I occasionally run the Holorifle, but that thing's an overpowered beast of a gun.

OT: PN is great if you're looking to make the game more difficult overall, at least if you make minor mistakes. My first time running the mod I jumped a Legion patrol and got my head blown off in one shot, was an eye opener.

ED-E is best companion eva. He floats quickly and never gets left behind, he shoots lasers so he stays out of the way of combat and he boosts your radar so it's like your perception is at max (helpful because I always dropped that down to like 2). I love that robot. Also, his laser seems kinda weak so he won't take over

"Pace", please :D

To clarify... I did have a little faceroll into the tops casino once I had Veronica, and it ended badly, especially for Benny. Once I did this, I went for some payback to the deathclaws, and I admit it took some work to beat down one.

Also, I have tried out Project Nevada, mainly to limit my companions' stats and the game became enjoyable. for the forseeable future I will spend a few days sprinting around Big Mt. trying not to get killed.

To Akratus: I know that the fallout community spits mods left and right, but I wasn't certain which would be the best to resolve my problem.
