I don't know about a family motto, but I know on my father's side we have a coat of arms and actually a castle over in Germany that belonged to my several-times-great-grandfather. So...that's interesting, I suppose. I want to claim that castle, but something tells me the German government might frown on that.

I realise I will almost certainly come across as insufferably snobbish for saying this, but just finding a coat of arms with your surname on it doesn't mean its yours. Not that many people are actually armigerous - in the UK, at least.
Oh I agree you can easily find coat of arms on the Internet and when I first saw this I was amazed and didn't believe it was ours but I asked family members who have been studing our history for years and I got a tree dating back to the Doomsday book after that its a bit fuzzy.
Oh gosh, sorry; I wasn't trying to specifically shoot down anyone posting here. Just issuing a general warning to those who get interested by this and go away and google only to return with a computer-generated monstrosity. It is awesome, though, when you find out something genuine and concrete.
Oh no no I knew you wasn't and true about the warning!

On the one side, it's "Ne Oublie" (or something like that) which translates into "Don't forget." Good advice.

On t'other side, it's "Touch Not the Cat but a Glove." In short, don't fuck with that cat unless you're wearing armour.

They musta had some badass cats in Scotland.

Not sure if my family was anything special, I like to think it is because it means "The Egyptian" not "A Egyptian"

Crests and motto's are more of a European thing, but if we had a motto it would probably be "Don't argue with us because you will lose, even if we are wrong you will lose. We're that stubborn"

"If You Fart In The Dark, No One Will Know It's You"

no really XD because when i was younger i had a weird dream and my mum said that to me in the dream, and when i told her the next day she laughed and said "its the best advice ive ever given you"
so now its our family motto =D

I actually don't know if I have any of these. Oh well, let's get researching!
I'd research it, but I'd more than likely wind up getting the family tree of country singer Roy Acuff instead.

If my family had a motto, it would most likely be "You have to work twice as hard to get half as much."

I have the coat of arms of both my mother and my father, but I cannot find any motto.
However, seeing as the Scully name is listed as a part of the Order Of The Thistle, I suppose I could count Nemo Me Impune Lacessit (which basicly means "no one attacks me with impunity").

I've got two. The one from the scottish side is the "rock of alarm" and has an image of a
cliff on fire. (apparently cuz they were on the border so whenever there was battler with the english or anyone else we were usually the first into battle.

The on the english side it's a black sheild with a white stripe and two golden unicorns. And the motto translates to "nothing is hard for a lover"

A bit cheezy but hey means m ancestors were dedicated to their family and honourable and still managed to be knights and kick ass on the battlefeild.

I'm bloody jealous of people with Coat of Arms, I think my family were fishermen in the past so I don't have one. It would be so utterly cool though. I would totally make a poster of it and hang it above my bed.
