Famous Franchises that do nothing for you...

We all know about gaming franchises: the trilogies (and beyond) that dominate the gaming landscape. Some of these franchises are older than the gamers who now play them, but no franchise captivates 100% of the gaming populace. So, fellow escapists, I'm curious: what famous gaming franchise fails to trip your trigger?

(Please note "franchise." I don't like any JRPGs, so I'm not gonna list my disdain for Final Fantasy here.)

I'll list 2 of my uninteresting franchises here: 1) Assassin's Creed. The first game was repetitive to such a degree that I haven't been able to get excited for an AC release since.

2) Resident Evil. A zombie game with worse than average writing. It takes effort to do that. Not positive effort, but effort nonetheless.

We share something in common it seems.

Assassin's Creed; I bought the first one and it didn't really get me excited. I tried the second and felt the same way. The thing is the game isn't awful and a lot of my friends like it. I just don't. The fact they change to different historical settings and locations not often used in games is great, and I like that they were willing to go for a wierd sci-fi/historical fiction mix in a time when "realistic" FPS games were all the rage. But it didn't grab me when I played it. I respect the series I just don't enjoy it.

Every single franchise ever.

Especially that one you love.

StarCraft

I want to like them, but every time I lay hands on one of them, I just... feel utterly unwelcome, and I'm not even talking multiplayer here. The game itself doesn't want me, as it does everything to stop me from enjoying it. The cool race is dumb, the fun unit is useless, the interesting strategy doesn't work and just as I start to feel good about myself I get roflstomped.
Don't ask me how I ever managed to finish ... SC2. The first SC2. Never finished the first one. The first SC, that is. Great, now even the naming scheme is against me.

But multiplayer is actually worse. I guess I don't like any RTS multiplayer, but in SC it's especially bad. You're supposed to like it, it's supposed to be one of the best. Competetive SC is/was HUGE, everyone knows that one guy who casts games n shit. But SC-MP is just... stupid. Whoever does X first, wins. No, don't bother correcting me, I'm sure there is so much more to it, but if it does nothing for me in a couple of matches a few years ago, I won't care now how in-depth it is.

I swear I'm simply not... nerdy enough for SC. I can't think of another explanation

Metal Gear Solid. I got about an hour each into 2 and 3, and I just don't get any of it. Every single thing I was doing seemed much much harder than it needed to be.

Call of Duty, Battlefield, Medal of Honor. Military shooters in general. Nor any shooters that revolve around competitive multiplayer.

Assassin's Creed never did it for me.

Mass Effect, although I've only played significant amounts of the first one.

I found the gameplay absolutely horrid. The shooting is unfun and none of the RPG mechanics add anything substantial to it except large amounts of tedium.

The story could not make up for the gameplay, either. It wasn't bad, but there wasn't any part of it that really stood out to me. That, and I felt seriously hampered by my choices because the game basically makes you pick between two options right from the beginning, eliminating most of the sense of choice in the game.

The other games may be better, but to be honest, I really don't care. Mass Effect had its chance to impress me, and it utterly failed. I see no reason to waste my time on the sequels to a game that I absolutely hated playing just to see if it's not as bad, because there are games I can play instead that I know I will enjoy.

Im not a big fan of the big fighting game series (Street fighter, Tekken etc) mostly because I really suck at them. That said I suck at them because they don't really interest me enough to learn how to play them properly.

Mass Effect. I don't dislike them as such but i'm not a fan either. I thought they were pretty average games. They didn't get me all excited anyway.

The Portal games. Again, I found them pretty average.

Call of Duty/Battlefield. Just not my thing. I spent 12 years doing "real life combat" and I don't buy games to play something I spent half my life doing for a career. I don't hate them before anyone chimes in they just don't appeal to me. Although the next person that says to me they know about weapons because they played those games is going to get backhanded.

Mario.

I have never been able to see the appeal, not even when I was younger. It wasn't that I didn't like platform games, I grew up with some great ones. You could happily find me playing Rainbow Islands or Zool on my Amiga. But Mario always left me cold.

I've also got the same thing about realistic FPS games. Again, I spent the vast majority of my 6th form playing deathmatch Doom and Doom 2 against my mates, but give me a copy of CoD or Battlefield and I'd rather gouge out my eyes with a rusty spork. Shooting aliens, zombies, demons... Fine.

Fable, Halo, Medal of Honor and a few others here and there, but those three are the ones that stick out...

Halo just never appealed to me, played it a bit and thought *meh*, while Fable just pissed me the hell off.

Oh, Civilisation as well. Got played IV and thought it was shit. *shrug*

Metal gear. All it seems to me is trial and error gameplay coupled with ridiculously gimmicky boss fights that don't require skill but require some odd strategy to kill. I get no enjoyment out of those games even though I tried really hard to play them.

Mass effect and Battlefield. I don't mean to say these two just because they are both EA games although that is a bad point......Let me explain.

Mass effect: I liked the first game but didn't enjoy the second as much, then the third game made me glad that I didn't like it. People rave about how great it is and how the characters are brilliant and the story and universe is great but......nope.....nothing.....It does nothing for me at all.

Battlefield: I haven't been a longtime fan of this or anything, I remember enjoying the singleplayer for Battlefield 2: Modern combat on the PS2 but that was about it until Bad company.
Now I really liked bad company. I enjoyed the multiplayer for it a lot and my only problem was some unbalanced weapons and lag. I then had the misfortune to purchase bad company 2 which I hated, I hated the perks, I hated most of the maps, I hated the new classes, I hated most of the game other than the singleplayer which I enjoyed even more than the first one.

Apparently I am in a minority in not liking it but it did nothing for me and felt like they were just trying to incorparate Call of duty elements into it to get more sales. BF3 got even worse, I didn't like the look on it and to be fair I did only play the beta on the 360 but damn.

The 360 beta made me throw out any thoughts of anything resembling trading money or something of value for it. There are probably many reasons for this but I just couldn't stand that game.

On a positive note, I did really like Battlefield 1943, that is one of my favorite XBLA games of all time, I found it much more enjoyable than Bad company 2.

I like fps games like CoD and Halo, but man, Battlefield just doesn't work for me. It just seems slow, arbitrary, and so perfectly balanced that nothing is interesting. I found more Frustrating than CoD and slower paced than Halo, which is saying something, because Halo can be as slow as molasses dripping down the back of a frozen corpse.

Final Fantasy is something I've never been able to get in to. I've tried on a couple occasions, but I've never been a fan of the gameplay. I get why people like them, I just always seem to find myself bored with them fairly quickly.

I played an hour of the first Mass Effect and felt none of them were for me. I also wasn't impressed by the Matrix. Maybe it was that I watched it 13 years after it came out, but I just didn't see what made it impressive for the time other than the visuals.
