I haven't bothered to read them much actually but I do slowly throw bits together in a general effort to create one. I'm pretty sure you can read it and call me bonkers, incredibly egocentric and probably very derivative as well as one of the slowest Fan-Fiction writers on the face of the planet but to me its just a way of getting my imagination to stop envisioning things to add to the story.

If that's not the reaction you wanted, then how about this: I'm off to read the My Little Ponies story because it sounds bloody hilarious. And I like watching the fourth wall get knocked down in a burning pile of rubble and flames.

I can't remember the good fanfiction (been too long since I regularly read it), except maybe Garden of Eva, if you can get past the gratuitous sex. Maybe not even then.

I've read some woefully bad fanfiction, written some too, again looking back on it after a few years.

Best Fanfic I've ever read?

The Unity Saga.

If you're a fan of Star Trek and the Star Wars Expanded Universe; GO READ IT. NOW!

It's a massive crossover between the two universes, written by Chuck Sonnenberg, also known as SFDebris, and by massive I mean 250 Chapters. Two hundred and Fifty.

This is, by far, the greatest Team Fortress 2 fanfiction I've ever read. [http://m.fanfiction.net/s/6211518/1/] And better than any other fanfiction I've ever read. Hell, it's better than some bestselling novels I've read. The characters are fascinating and engaging, the pacing is phenomenal, and the story is just superb.

And guess what? It's a romance fanfiction. A same-sex romance. Oh lawd. But worry not: this fanfiction was written out of pure spite against all of those horribly written romance fanfictions. And the outcome...well, here are what a few others have written about it.

"I bow down before your fanfiction, and will favourite this instantly. You said you wanted to attempt to write a more realistic and character-developing fanfiction, and I assume I will not be the only one to say that you have succeeded."

"This is an amazing story. It really got me emotionally attached to the characters. Your writing is just wonderful. You definitely did it 'right.' The romance, humor, and drama is all included in the perfect amounts. The character development and progression is certainly realistic. This story may have been written out of spite, but it shows that you care about the story and characters."

"Would you kindly point me in the direction of Sniper x Spy SMUT? I seem to have accidentally fallen into a well-written and powerful piece of fiction writing with startling character development, believable story & character progression and a keen eye for detail."

"...holy crap. I don't even support this pairing, and yet this is an awesome fanfiction. You are a very, very talented writer!"

I highly, highly recommend for people to read this one. I don't care if you hate "homo parings," I thought I did too until I read this. You will not regret reading this. I promise you that.

The best (well... 'best') I remember reading was a certain Call of Duty fanfic, I really hope it was a troll but either way it was totally, hilariusly, awful. I wish I could remember its name...

I'm completely sure that even saying "My Immortal" causes a person to lose IQ on the spot. As for "Cupcakes"......I've tried to avoid it for a good while, but the temptation is starting to grow.

And I think the best one I've read (Pony-related of course, never got near any of them after reading a part of My Immortal some time ago) was Circle of Friends [http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/03/story-circle-of-friends.html], or Bubbles [http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/03/story-bubbles.html] if only because they were the ones that persuaded me to read further into the fanfics of the series, and in general.

I'm trying to get myself start writing fanfics, as they appear fun to do and what not, but writing regular fiction feels less restrictive and I can't seem to break off of that trend.

You, my dear OP, have had the misfortune of reading the two worst fanfics written by man (sic).
I haven't read My Immortal but I hear it's pretty bad. As for Cupcakes I read it and while it was very gruesome I found it to be a delightfully dark interpretation of Pinkie. Gorey to the point of disturbing yes, but that wasn't hard to look past and appreciate how well Pinkie fit the role she was cast in. Favorite line from that story had to be
And besides, no will find out. I mean, how long do you think I?ve been doing this?? And with that the lights suddenly came to life and showcased the rest the room.
Just a priceless moment where the full gravity of her madness comes crashing down on both the reader and RD.

Honestly I walked away from reading that quite entertained by the whole scenario, and I'm the kind of person that has no desire to see any of the Saw movies and avoids the horror/slasher genre in general.

More on topic though: I haven't read too many fan fics; didn't read any until the pony crazy rolled around. At the moment I think my favorite is the Portal 2/FiM crossover. [http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/05/story-better-living-through-science-and.html] Brilliantly written and spends just enough time in either field of cannon so that it all just meshes together.

Well, there is good fanfiction out there, but you need to dig hard and deep for it~
as tv tropes puts it, there's 10% worth dying for. there's plenty of well-written fanfiction out there.there's plenty of AU fics that are also good and original. check out my fanfiction profile-http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1934379/eggmiester- if you want examples of good fanfiction. it's mostly persona and naruto fanfiction, but there's a bit of everything in it.

of course there's bad fanfiction- but there's plenty of good. connecting the dots-http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5736374/1/Connecting_the_Dots- is a naruto/justice league crossover, and is so intelligent and awesome, and is faithful to both series. or read ichigo and the beanstalk:
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3882044/1/Ichigo_and_the_Beanstalk
if your looking for something funny. or if you're looking sheer, unbridled awesome, look no further than fairly english story

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5194916/1/Persona_3_Fairly_English_Story

it's awesome. seriously, i really recommend fanfiction to all of ye.

Not really, you just need to know where to look.

I would absolutely recommend Fallout: Equestria [http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/04/story-fallout-equestria.html#more]. It's actually better written than any Fallout game, and is wonderfully emotive, exciting and brilliant.

Also, Timelords and Terror [http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/03/story-timelords-and-terror.html] is a fantastic Doctor Who/MLP crossover.
