Being a girl, I don't particularly appreciate a game or comic that's nothing but one panty shot after another. I understand, however, that it's used to draw in a male audience.

Do any guys out there feel insulted by this view of you, that's that what draws you to a game?

Girls--How much is too much? How many pairs of panties before you just give it up as a bad job?? How much cleavage before you feel like you're suffocating in excessive breast tissue??

How much is too much?

Fanservice, in general?

*points to Final Fantasy:Advent Children, FFVII:Crisis Core, FFVII: Dirge of Cerberus, FF:Dissidia*

That's too much.

As for pantyshots and all that.. Eh. It sells. It doesn't bother me anymore.

I'm offended that developers assume that sex automatically sells.

I'm even more offended that it does.

I'm not a big fan of fan service. I watch/play things for the story/characterisation, not to get my rocks off.
But, I understand that for a show/game to succeed, it must be willing to show a little cheesecake. So, unless it goes completely overboard, I'm forgiving, for the most part.

I gotta have more panty-shots, baby.

I enjoy every bit of cheesecake and fan-service that comes my way, and I enjoy fan-service games/movies/anime as a genre in and of itself. I'm willing to believe that there are men who honestly dislike it, but remain convinced that the majority of male Escapists who post as much are lying through their teeth to make themselves look PC.

There's always Time-Place-Occasion to worry about, of course; I don't want my dramatic tension or suspense marred by gratuitous T&A.

But as long as it isn't grossly inappropriate to the scene, it's awwwwwright.

EDIT: spelling/grammar

Good Fanservice: Completely rebuilding a game using higher technologies. Black Mesa Source is the example I use.

Bad Fanservice: Over 9000 sequels, prequels, novels, fan fictions and T-shirts at Hot Topic. Star Wars and Sonic come to mind.

The fanservice guage changes depending on the person.

For me, as long as the developers aren't shoving the fanservice in your face, and doesn't interrupt the story to give you fanservice for fanservice's sake, then it's fine. I like my game with a nice subtle side of fanservice; not as the main course. It's games like Street Fighter have far too much fanservice, what with the skimpy outfits and endless "bouncing" put into the female characters.

It's funny, my friend and I were just talking about that. We came to the conclusion that in the MGS4 world buttons and bras were very expensive, so most women could only afford the bottom few buttons for their shirts and no bra. THAT SAID there are times it works, MGS3 where EVA seduced snake, that works as story

It kind of sickens me that the male populous is that easy to sell to, just show some tits and there you go, game sold. Thats why I left the male gender.

I couldn't agree more.

As for fanservice in general, to me, it's like things that can be offensive (violence, nudity, controversial material in genral): if the fanservice-element can have an actual purpose (IE, say FF7:Advent Children, on top of being pure fan service, had brought cohesion or closure to the plot) it's acceptable. If it's just there for the sake of being there or for gathering attention to itself, then it's generally juvenile at best.

I've built up an immunity to fanservice from watching so much anime.

Copious amounts of fanservice don't bug me one bit.

And in some cases, fanservice is actually a good thing.

posters at the front of berserk is good, but unnecessary nudity devalues the characters.

I think you're talking more about unnecessary nudity/sexiness that in no way adds to the story or quality of the game. Personally, I felt that the sex scene in Mass Effect was totally tasteful and important to the game. Anyone who bought the game for the promise of alien boob would be sorely disappointed.

On the flip side, I have never been able to take the Tomb Raider games seriously because (even when they were good, i.e. Tomb Raider 1&2) an overly large selling point is the size of Lara Croft's breasts and the tightness of her butt. That turns me off because it totally doesn't make the game seem worth my time, or $50+ of my money.

While the original Star Wars trilogy and several Star Wars games are shining examples of the best of their respective mediums, I really don't think Star Wars books are highlights of literature. I liked them until I was about 13 or 14, then I realized there are books which are written far better and have more important and engaging stories. I hate telling people that they are wrong in their tastes, but a cursory glance at other literature shows the shortcomings of Star Wars novels.

Which, honestly, is too bad. "Star Wars" definitely compares favorably to many modern Hollywood films, which is more than you can say about a lot of other films from the 70s. Many Star Wars games easily rank among the best games ever made. (Knights of the Old Republic comes to mind) Why is it, then, that a Star Wars-themed novel can't remotely compare to a Pultizer-winning novel like The Road by Cormac McCarthy?

EDIT: Apologize for the double post
