Lol and behold , a thread about fanny packs. I don't know if they are coming back in style ( or if they were every in style) but iv'e been seeing quite a lot of them lately. While i see the utility of them, i find them hideous and hate them with a flowery passion. To me, they are ugly, uncomfortable and pointless. Anything i can/would put in a fanny pack i can put in a bag or purse or a wallet. I just don't see the appeal.

So my question to you my dear escapists is:

Do you wear fanny packs?

And if you don't what is your opinion on them?

I haven't worn one since I was about six years old, I would never wear them now.

American tourists wear them all of the time in my hometown though, it's like a trademark style. :D

Hell yeah. But only to hold my Pogs while I wear my visor cap and pretend it's the 90's.

No, they're ugly and not very useful, but I understand why somebody might want to wear one.

Uh, once when I went to a theme park to keep my (and my boyfriend's) glasses in while I go on the rides, does that count?

They're useful when in a situation like that. Having to keep asking ride attendants to watch my glasses is annoying.
But as a regular fashion choice... no. I wouldn't wear one.

No. Never. Not once in a million years. That's one thing from the 90's that I'm thankful has gone mostly out of style.

I feel like fanny packs are acceptable only if you were them on your back. Otherwise it looks insanely tacky.

Do I? DO I?!

OF COURSE I D-

ok I can't say that without throwing up a little in my mouth. I can't imagine myself ever wearing one now, and I think the last time I might have used one at all was just a few years after I was born.

Known as the "bum bag" in the UK and not worn at the small of the back, rather round the front: alá

But no..... NO..... not since I was about 10!

It becomes kind of mandatory after your first pickpocketing abroad.

Not recently, but I DO have a Pokemon fanny pack that stores my boxless Gameboy games. Also has a special pocket in the front for the Gameboy itself. Used it as a kid all the time when I went to friends' houses.

According to wikipedia, it's supposed to be worn from behind, but thats too easy to pickpocket.

I would be more kind to them if the general opinion of them wasn't so extremely negative. I see their practical purpose, but I also think they look kinda dumb. Which is a shame, because as accessories go, I imagine they would be very practical.

Maybe the first and foremost problem is that they look extremely cheap, like a downsized backpack, that gets no kind of love whatsoever. Fastened with a plastic clip, it pulls its looks down even more. I wouldn't feel ashamed to wear one if it could be made more discrete, and not so damn ugly. And I don't think I'm metro enough to wear a purse.

I don't like having things in my pockets; phone, key chain, wallet, it quickly becomes crowded, and large key chains are downright unpleasant to carry around in my pocket. I don't like having my wallet in my pocket, it puts a sort of chafe on my pant legs that I don't like, and it gets hot and clammy between it and my leg. If I'm wearing shorts/cargos, the pocket space is either even more limited, or it makes the items in the lower pockets swing around like crazy. I also don't like wearing a backpack when wandering around town, I feel it makes me look like a weirdo. A jacket is ok, if it's not too hot. But when it is hot, I'm out of options.

All this could be remedied with having fanny packs as an accepted accessory, making them less ugly and not tied to social dogmas and disrespect.

How I appear to the world is something that worries me all the time.

Nope, don't wear 'em. I have no issue carrying a bag of some sort if I'm in that desperate need to carry more stuff than can comfortably go in my pockets.

Oh, and yes they look rather dumb.
