In the uk they aren't really a thing, unless you're at a small fair or "fate" ... you know how like a traveling fair will come through and set up a few rides (like "top spin" or just about any "thrill ride" from roller coaster tycoon 2). People manning the rides, might wear one to hold money in.

Other than that you might get the odd (in both meanings) old person wearing one but they are usually unseen.
Really no one wears them in the UK? If anything i would think the praticality of it, and the fact that people in europe are less vain than americains ( i'm including canada), mean people there would wear them. Do people in the UK also think they look weird/ugly?

No, I have never worn a fanny pack/bumbag, I have always used a proper bag/my pockets if I want to carry something. My friend uses one to store her valuables in when she goes out running, but other than that I have not really seen anyone wearing them in recent years.

I don't wear them, I haven't even seen them in years! I don't really like the look of them however I can see how useful they might be in cases like when you are out riding a bike or something. Or ice skating. Otherwise, meh, I have a handbag and that's all I need in life.

Also, the thread title made me giggle quite a bit.

Fanny doesn't mean the same thing here as does in North America. But no I don't wear one. I wear a backpack often enough though, need it for college.

They never really caught on here, and we associate them with stereotypical American tourists (not a flattering stereotype) so... yeah, there's no way most Brits would be seen dead in one.

OT: The closest thing I've ever owned is one of those money belts that's basically a flat version of a "fanny pack" (man, that really sounds like it means something else over here...). I've used them to keep my money/tickets/passport etc in in places where there's a high risk of pickpocketing and/or a bag isn't practical, like funfairs (can't take bags on rides), festivals, gigs, certain foreign cities etc. I only ever wear that under my clothes though, otherwise I'd just be advertising my valuables, so I'm not sure it really counts.

No they are seriously unpopular in the UK. I remember my mum used to wear one on holiday back in the 90s/early 00s they werent popular then but they are less popular now

Can we please stop calling them "fanny packs". I know others have said it means "something else" but they havent really explained that a fanny in the UK is a vagina. What youre basically saying is a "vagina bag". We call them "bum bags" which to be honest doesnt really make them sound anymore appealing. Had they named them "tactical storage belts" then possibly they would be a tiny bit more popular

People would probably think more of you if you wore a t-shirt with a cock on it

this is sorta..amusing and a timely placed thread haha.

One of my mates had to swap buildings where he works last week, and his replacement was wearing a fanny pack at the interview haha. The first thing that came out of his mouth when he told me was just 'Hes wearing a f'ing fanny pack...to a f'ing job interview..' I couldnt help but giggle at that haha.

OT: Ehh, I grew up in America till I was around 13, so atleast where I grew up, if you were lower then grade 5...it was mandatory to wear one on school field trips etc. They were used mainly only to hold 'important' things though, such as personal items/tickets and the school ID. This was mainly for the reason that if you got lost from the rest of the group at say..a museum or so, and didnt know your address/phone number or wtv because you were in too much of a panic (as some children do if they get lost.) that upon speaking to an adult they would have an easy way of taking you to the police station and/or finding out where you belong etc.

On a sidenote: This was in the 90's, for some reason in the back of my head I still think that day and age was less 'dangerous' for a child then it is nowadays, either that or Ive grown up by now and dont have any negative memories of things happening back then as I do see nowadays in the news.

In the UK we call them Bumbags, because "fanny" is another word for vagina here. lol. An woman who wore them would be harrased by perverts making jokes about putting things in their fanny. Although i even think "bumbag" was used as an insult as a kid. Kinda like how we call our lame friends "gay" we we call them "bumbag" which had the same meaning.

Haven't worn one for ages. Not this side of Kosovo, I think.

They are... Reasonably practical, but they just look silly. Not that it matters sometimes, but they do. Having a little pouch on your belly just won't look good. There are better ways to achieve the same results of getting more important stuff reasonably out of pick-pocket range.

As a tourist, the least I should worry about is my appearance, but I do. Enough to refuse bumbags.

Thing is, I imagine things were about as safe then as now, if not even less safe. The reason why the kiddyfiddlers seems to have grown more and dangerous is the fear marketing. From papers through talkshows to Oprah-sofas, the buggers were just everywhere for a while in the early 00's.

On recollection, those were very, very strange times...

Im just wondering as a tourist wearing a bumbag tactical utility belt if you would be stand out more thus making yourself more of a victim. You may as well where a big neon sign that says "tourist: rob me now" all they really need to do is have 2 guys (or maybe three) one to stand in front of you and distract you while the other unclips it from behind or even cuts it then they are gone before you know whats happened

Good lord no! Not since I owned an original GameBoy (when they were new) and carried around a link cable in case someone I ran into wanted to play Tetris... and get owned. So, not any longer, nearly 24 years ago or so.
So weird to have a flashback like that.

Don't wear them. Don't see myself doing so as I'd use a backpack or pockets, depending on what I'm carrying.

Never understood people who wore them on their back/bum (despite the name) as surely you'd want to keep it where you can see it. I don't know how much you could feel if someone were to steal something... pick pockets are crafty buggers!

Totally agree. That's why whenever I've worn money belt (which isn't even really the same thing, since it's flat) I've worn it under my clothes. I don't understand the "bumbag = safe" argument, since they're incredibly easy to undo and wearing one pretty much advertises where your valuables are, especially if it's one of those neon-coloured ones...

Of course I use belt bag! They are awesome for places where purses are a really bad idea like concerts and roller coasters. I hate carrying purses and usually only carry a small wrist bag, but when I need to carry more that will not fit into a wrist bag, I like to wear a belt bag. Although I do not have a bulky "fanny pack" the ones I have look like these:

I thought fanny packs and belt bags flat or not were the same things. However I cannot see wearing anything on your backside, as that would not be safe at all. I can see not wanting to carry a purse because of how easy it is to steal/ steal from, and the strain it puts on your shoulder. At a street festival once I caught a guy sticking his hand into my purse, then shortly after my friend had her strap cut and a guy run off with hers so I stopped carrying one after that and opting for a small wrist bag or a belt bag, both of which have been much easier to keep up with than the arm strap purses or handbags.

Shoulder bags all the way, atleast they can hold more than a purse and maybe a small bottle.

I thought shoulder bags were purses. How exactly are they different? They look like the same thing to me, even when Searching " shoulder bag" and "purse" Some of the exact same images come up.
