I'll admit as much that it was erroneous to assume that you had even the slightest amount of exposure to the series other than pop culture references and advertisements. For that I apologize.Happyninja42 said:Well let's see, I've never watched an episode of the show, I've never read the manga (I'm assuming there is one), I've never played the card game, or any video games, and I've never had a conversation with anyone in depth about the Pokemon thing at all. In fact, the only context of Pokemon I have, is pop culture callbacks to it, from things like Robot Chicken, and people just randomly spouting out "Pika!" whenever someone mentions Pikachu's name, almost like a Pavlovian Response. And on the subject of Pikachu talking, the ONLY THING anyone ever says, when you mention his fucking name is, in an annoyingly high pitched voice "PIKA!! PIKA PIKA! PIKACHUUUU!" So why in the hell, would I think he is capable of actually speaking, when the only thing anyone has ever indicated he's capable of saying, is his own damn name? Nobody quotes catchy lines that he says like "It's clobberin' time!" Or "I am Justice, I am the Night! I...AM...BATMAN!!" It's just "PIKA PIKA!!" And in fact, the only other Pokemon I know by name is Squirtle, who also, is only ever depicted as saying his name. If you establish in your story, that the things can only say their own damn names, which seems to be all anyone ever has them say when they are quoting them, why should I think they are capable of anything else?Infernal Lawyer said:Define "know stuff". I don't want to be rude, but... you really WOULD have to know absolutely nothing about Pokemon to wonder why there's a game where "THE" Pikachu (as if there's only one in the universe) suddenly knows how to talk.Happyninja42 said:Sorry but there are people in this world who don't know anything about Pokemon. I find it funny that you seem to think the only two types of people in the world are :Infernal Lawyer said:Talking Pokemon have been a thing ever since Team Rocket in the TV series (they're beyond rare but hardly unheard of), and it's not like there's only one of the rats in the entire world of Pokemon, much less one who spontaneously learned how to talk.Happyninja42 said:Did he actually develop linguistic skills at some point in the plethora of Pokemon stuff out there? I just...I don't get it.
Sorry, but you don't have to be a Poke-geek to know that.
1. Poke-geeks
2. People who know stuff about Pokemon
Look, I don't mean to give you grief for not knowing anything about a piece of fiction, but you obviously have at least enough of a passing interest in this news to comment.
So yeah there are people who know nothing about this thing. This might seem surprising to you, but I find it surprising that this thing is even remotely popular, given how stupid it is. Nerddom isn't universal. Just because you geek out over something, doesn't mean everyone else gives a shit about that thing.
That said, I find it funny how you imply that I'm some massive fan of the series, right after taking offense to MY own assumptions about you no less, all the while hurling comments I'm guessing were supposed to be inflammatory. Yes, I cared enough to watch the cartoon series when I was young. Sure, I got two of the games. But I've long since grown bored of them for the most part. And even ignoring that... I already told you that you don't need to have anything close to in-depth knowledge, or as you put it "geek out" over Pokemon, to know talking Pokemon are a thing. Or maybe your definition of "geek" is anyone who shows something bordering on minor interest on a piece of media, such as any ten year old who watches the tv show. I don't know, but it certainly seems that's what you're implying.
If you're gonna be hostile, at least try to be a little more logical and a little less hypocritical about it, hmm?
