Haters, please steer clear of this thread. I need the responses for university work.

Bronies and pegasisters, I need your help. I'm writing a dissertation/thesis on my fandom of My Little Pony and it would really, really help me out if you could respond to just a couple of questions.

1) Why do you like the show?
2) How and why did you start watching?
3) What kind of backlash / hate (if any) have you received - either online or offline?

Thanks very much for helping me, I really appreciate it.

Watching the show would be a good start, then you could do a comparison with your own hypotheses and the answers you receive. Plus it's fun.

I know you probably don't mean badly but the way you've phrased this smacks of those annoying surveys people are asked to take when they have no reason to. Like you're asking us to do all the work.

Maybe it's a New Media degree. Or simply broad strokes Psychology.

Also she's a her. Though she could identify as a man so it'd still work.

I see. Well I have learned something. Today.

Also when I said 'The Man' I was meaning 'The Man' in this sense:

'The Man:

The Man is the head of "the establishment" put in place to "bring us down." Though nobody has physically seen "the man," they are rumored to have a substantial amount of acquired wealth, presumably acquired by exploiting those whom his "establishment" is "keeping down."'

Actually what i'm wondering is how could opinions from a random forum even be an acceptable source for a dissertation or thesis.

It's funny. The animation lends itself well to visual jokes. The writing is only okay on that front--the jokes tend to be either too predictable or just randomness in the guise of jokes--but on the whole, the series is very humorous. I also enjoy the characters; if the ponies were real people, I'd like to be their friends (Spike too).

My satellite provider offered Hub channel for free for a month. While looking at the programming, I said to myself, "Isn't that the show that everyone on the fucking planet is getting their internet avatars from? I wonder what the story is there."

None, but I don't feel a need to try to get people to validate my enjoyment of the show, so I very rarely put people in a position where they have to express their opinions about it.

I have watched the show, and I am not asking other people to do all the work. I simply need to know why people like the show for my introduction. Everything else in the dissertation comes from my own research. I'm not asking for much here.

How many people are doing their dissertations on this show? Seriously, this isn't the first time I've seen something like this.

What are you even studying? What's your dissertation about? It can't just be "MLP is good and I like it". You need some kind of intent, something to say.
The dissertation is on How the adult fanbase for My Little Pony differs from other fanbases and the conventions on fanbases set by academics, if at all?

First off, I'm a girl. Secondly, I'm studying journalism, but since it's my final project, I can write it on whatever I want.

Because what better way is there to get multiple opinions from NORMAL people. Also I'm starting to run out of time.

I call everyone Man also in a previous post I explained that my use of 'The Man' don't take it personal like, I just don't take the time to check everyone's profile to find out if I'm talking to a female or male. So everyone is man or dude.

Sweet deal, so why did you choose MLP?

Because MLP is something I'm a fan of and I know about it. Why do a 10,000 word report on something I don't know or care about?

I figured in Journalism you would often be writing about things you neither cared or knew about, but I'm not studying it so I wouldn't really know :p

Hello there, regular fan of MLP here.

1: The characters are what sold me on the show, fluttershy is adorable :3

2: I saw the pony avatars here on the escapist, ALOT of users had them. This was during my first couple weeks on the escapist, so I stuck a comment on the end of one of my posts asking what all the fuss was about. Naturally someone pointed me towards season 2 episode 1, I decided to start at the beginning for the full experience :p

3: Funny story, I was a closet brony for about 4 months until one of my friends said "20% cooler" (Reference to one of the episodes) during a game of LoL. I asked him if he watched the show, he didn't... (awkward) so I had no choice but to convert him, didn't take long :3. After that was done, my best friend was... a bit of a hater, he would just rage about how older males watch a show for little kids. Unbeknownst to him me and my friend were watching the show and just playing along with the hate :p

Fast forward a couple months and the friend who I converted tells my best friend that he watches the show. I used this as a cue to break him the news aswell. This shook our friendship for a little while and he called me a "Pony fag" (And other names) for a while. But now he is neutral on the whole concept of bronies and such and we couldn't be happier. Besides it's only a matter of time till my best friend caves and watches the show...

Hope this helps.

In a way you're right but whenever we've had to write news stories or whatever, we can pick any news issues we wanted. Plus, if I've never been allowed free reign until now, I might as well take the chance when it comes along.

I'll take some liberty's and assume this is directed at myself, in which case sounds good to me! anytime your given free reign in a work or studious environment should be capitalized on fully.

I would help you out with your project but I'm not a MLP fan, hopefully a few dudes here will give you a hand good luck.

1. I could point at the characters, animation, and so on, but really, I just like how utterly sincere the whole thing is. I mean, I'm usually not a big fan of the saccharine happy-fest type show, because I always get a feeling of "the writers just put this in because the studio told them to", but when I watch MLP, they say everything with a totally straight face. Be kind to others. Don't betray your friends. Generally, acting like a dick isn't cool.

While all of these sound completely obvious, so many times in media we see the douchebags get the pot of gold while the people who decide to do the right thing or be overall nice people are seen as the suckers. I mean, I have nothing against dark and gritty, but there is such thing as over-saturation.

Watching MLP just puts a smile on my face every time, so I come back to it whenever I'm feeling down.

2. It was a dark and stormy night...

jk I had seen it floating around the forums for about a year, and my reasoning for not trying it out before was "if I get into it, I'm not going to be benefited at all socially" [sub]and I was right[/sub]. One night, though, I saw that the whole series was up on YouTube, so I finally let my curiosity get the better of me, justifying it by saying "I'll probably just make fun of it anyway". Here's how it went down:

First few minutes: thisisgaythisisgaythisisgaythisisgaythisisgay

Twilight shows up: Oh? A nerdy protagonist on a girl's show? Count me interested.

Twilight makes a few jokes: That was stupid. Why am I laughing at it then?

Pinkie shows up: Oh dear Lord. Dis gun be gud.

Applejack shows up: Oh joy, a southern stereotype (I now know she's so much more).

Rainbow Dash shows up: Overconfident? Just a tinge of douchey? Now here's a character I can relate to.

Fluttershy shows up: DAWWWWWWWWW

Nightmare Moon shows up: "YOU'RE ALL GONNA DIE! MWUHAHAHAHA!" I can appreciate this.

You can pretty much guess the rest. Twilight was my favorite in an instant.

3. Real life? The normal stuff, not too bad. Guys make fun of my wallpaper at school, but they don't get too bad since they're used to me doing weird shit. My family still doesn't know, and them being ultra-conservative Southerners with a gay panic issue, I'm thinking they never will.

Online? I've learned not to mention it without expectations of some backlash. Even the smallest mention of it on a place that isn't ponychat is asking for flaming. People would rather just laugh and say "haha you guys are different than me, dumbasses" than try to understand anything about it.

That's about all. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask away.

1) Great animation, great characters etc etc, plus it's just happy, so much grimdark shit is targeted at my age group and it is nice to have something I can enjoy that is just happy.

2) I first heard about it before it was out, on some kinda preview thing, I liked the art style of it and the animation but the content was hard to take seriously. I tried watching it on my own but it was too sweet for me to but I did enjoy the things ppl made with it, like the pmvs so I started making my friend watch them too. He decided he really wanted to know the context of things like Fluttershy saying "YOUR GOING TO LOVE ME!" so he sat down and watched it all, then during our beer and anime night he got me to sit still long enough to watch some episodes, I got a favorite character
, Rarity from the episode Dog and Pony Show. I didn't go full brony till I finished with season 2 and felt a wanting, like when you finish reading a good book but really want more.

3) Haven't gotten any backlash myself, I see haters every now and then but I have fun with any who respond to me in something like planetside 2.

1) Why do you like the show?

Because it's a good show. Fun, interesting characters, catchy tunes, and much better stories and writing than most children's programming... It's exactly what Lauren Faust intended it to be.
People always say "the animation" but it's more than that, it's the entire aesthetic: animation, art style, character and set design. However you say it, it's just a beautiful show.

2) How and why did you start watching?

I heard about these things called "Bronies" who were grown men who liked MLP. Figured if that many people were watching it, it must be doing something right. I watched it, and it was.

3) What kind of backlash / hate (if any) have you received - either online or offline?

Not much really. Mostly just trolls being trolls.
And of course people complaining about over-eager bronies pushing their brony "agenda" on the masses, which I can kind of understand.
