I hate to be slightly generic, but no one has mentioned Cave Story [http://www.cavestory.org/] yet?

This post is so strangely wonderful.

This example is sadly as bad as any of ridiculous sexualization of women in fighting games, but Vanguard Princess is a pretty fun, free fighting game for the PC.

There's also Cho Ren Sha [http://www2.tky.3web.ne.jp/~yosshin/my_works/download.html], a very solid PC Doujin Shoot em' Up you ought to play.

Of course, if you haven't already played the infamous Yume Nikki, you have to go play it right now.

not strictly a game but virtual box is free software which allows for any OS emulation OSX, Linux, Windows, other ones, so say warcraft 1 does not work with windows 7, install windows 98 in virtual box, install 98 and off you pop. Playing Warcraft.

Have fun kids
Yay, a fellow VirtualBox user! :) I see too many recommendations for VMware Player (which isn't that bad and it's also free - it's a nice alternative) and too little for VirtualBox. I personally prefer VBox because...well, I can't say exactly why but it needs more love, I say.

greetings comrade
I emulate many flavours of linux and windows with Virtual Box. See retro gaming on a Mac is not really a thing otherwise. I'd say Virtual Box needs more love but it gets plenty in the Linux community. I use it because It was the first one that worked. Wine does not act like it should for me.

World of Tanks, A free arcade-style tank game with lots of customization and depth. It is very well balanced so that paying players don't get huge game-winning advantages over free-players.

Team Fortress 2 might have already been mentioned, but i'd suggest all newcomers to at least give a it try. Its a great, simple 1st person shooter.

These are sitting on my Desktop right now

Spelunky [http://spelunkyworld.com/] - This is a charming little rougelike platformer that is insanely replayable and suprisingly deep. Free on PC, but its also on XBLA.

Breaktris [http://www.whatwouldmolydeux.com/display.php?GameID=261] - You basically play Breakout and Tetris at the same time, but the games interact. Its unlikely to keep you occupied for long, but its interesting.

Passage [http://hcsoftware.sourceforge.net/passage/] - I dont get this game. Im only really mentioning it because its on my desktop. I just held down the right arrow key and stuff happened.

Tribes Ascend [https://account.hirezstudios.com/tribesascend/] - Ive been playing this for weeks and still cant figure out how to say Shazbot. I wish you better luck.

There's Spirit Engine 2, a very good RPG. Also, there are a variety of wonderful free roguelikes - Brogue and DoomRL are good starting points for people new the the genre.
Everytime I see your avatar it makes me hungry. Whenever I see that seen from Pulp Fiction my stomach rumbles.

OT: Tribes Ascend was just released a free to play online shooter. Very fun.
LMAO, I have to cook burgers any time we watch Pulp Fiction at my place (true story) for this very reason. Same reason we light up the hookah anytime we watch movies involving heavy amounts of smoking (though that may be because I am a reformed cigarette smoker).

OT: I love Dead Frontier though I don't think it is truely "Freeware" but a free game

The Ur-Quan Masters. It's an opensource version of Star Control 2, and it's made to work on modern systems. But everyone already knows how awesome Star Control 2 is.

Dwarf Fortress and Stone Soup also get another vote from me.

Daggerfall is also free nowdays. It's a bit dated and has always had some issues, but it does a lot right too. I actually like it more than Morrowind.

Then there's Spelunky, which is basically like a mix between a 2D platformer and a roguelike.

I like how it manages to have a clear ms. fanservice character, in a game where every character is a ms. fanservice.

a few people have said this but it can not be said enough spelunky is the best ting since slice bread (and apparently spunky is an official word in the Microsoft dictionary)

the tribes games (tribes 1,2 and acend)are free highly skill based fps games (but the original two are so old the only people who play them are stupidly good) and so is quake live.

Battle Dawn [http://www.battledawn.com/]

A great MMORTS. My only complain is that all the top players are only on the top because they get a boat load of donation bonuses. And that I can hand over control to a teammate if someoen attacks me while I'm offline. And spamming the radar jammer. :\

I think the best stuff isn't just free, but open-source. Therefore, I must now share:

OpenRA, basically, Command & Conquer 1 and Red Alert 1, free, legal, with online play. Awesome stuff. No campaign though, but that may come later.

Cube 2: Sauerbraten, very fun online game, like Quake 3 Arena, but with a built in, very easy, level editor.

Check those out, lots of fun.

Oh, right, forgot this game, Vega Strike. Remember that space trading game Yahtzee was talking about making? Yeah, it already existed. http://vegastrike.sourceforge.net/
An update was just released, for the first time in a long time. Seriously, get it and play.

Dwarf Fortress scares me. Everything about that game just makes my head explode.
That's the idea! :D

OT: Try Abandonia.com. It's all legal abandonware, and most of it is awesome.

Weird you say that - you reminded me that both C&C1 [http://compactiongames.about.com/od/freegames/p/cc_free.htm] and RA [http://compactiongames.about.com/od/freegames/p/ccredalert_free.htm] were released for free.

Still not Open Source, though, just to add to the free games.

I know Cube, I just haven't played it yet. I think it may have been made by the same devs behind Death Illustrated that I mentioned. Well, at any rate, they run on the same game engine called the Cube engine.

Hedgewars [http://www.hedgewars.org/] is an open source clone of Worms, so definitely good, both because it's worms and because it's OS.

Also, somehow everybody (including me) forgot Yahtzee's games [http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/donate.htm].
