Jonathan Stroud. The Bartimaeus Trilogy was singularly witty, adventurous, and original. One of my favorites ever.
And despite the fact that I've never 100% completed one of his books, Tolkein is a no-brainer. To be the standard by which all high fantasy since then is judged is an exemplary achievement, and he earned it.

Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, Clive Barker (specifically his young adult series Abarat), and... Several others who escape my memory at the moment.
