So which do you prefer?

I know that usually the genres are grouped together as kind of the same thing, and that somtimes they blur the lines between sci fi and fantasy (Stars wars for example)

But generally (when its obvious) which genre do you enjoy the most, do you like lord of the rings or Aliens? Dragon age or Mass effect? ect ect

For me I definetly prefer sci fi, I just find it a little harder to get into or more exited about fantasy/ high fantasy I just don't find it as interesting especially stuff thats very tolken-like, and the details don't interest me much (Not a huge fan of lord of the rings either) but don't get me wrong you could probably say the same about Sci Fi, I think it just comes down to personal preference (I know that not all fantasy is tolken-like )

So which do you prefer and wht are your favorite examples?

Fantasy for sure. Swords and spells > spaceships and laser guns.

The Wheel of Time continues to be my favorite series.

I'm really not sure. I prefer to write fantasy, but prefer reading sci-fi. I don't like classic fantasy though - the whole 'medieval kingdom with a benevolent monarchy beset by hordes of orcs', tolkien style is not really my thing.

That's a very hard decision for me; I love both more then any other genre. Still if I had to choose I guess I'd go with fantasy. Tolkien is what got me into them to begin with.

Sci-fi

I like fantasy almost as much but honestly, guy with badass horse < guy with badass spaceship...

Hell, they're the same anyway. Classic hero's journey, exploration, finding old tech that's somehow better than modern stuff, crazy magic stuff that saves the characters ass just when it's needed, some bad dude/s that get a hold of said old stuff and plan to enslave or 'splode the world ect...

Fantasy wins for me. Sci-fi just bores me for some reason. Sword of Truth series would have to be my favourite.

What, no poll?
OT: I prefer Sci Fi. Something just appeals to me more about flying around the galaxy in space ships shooting lasers at evil squishy monsters, than riding around on a horse, frying squishy monsters with fireballs. My favorite examples? Babylon 5 and Star Wars. Two of the best stories the genre has to offer.

Sci-fi

Guns always seem more interesting.

Swordplay (In a fantasy setting) only comes interesting in movies though.

Sci-fi. More interesting, if you ask me - I like space more than fields and forests. Oh, and aliens are kind of awesome. As are guns....

Plus, you know. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Definitely Sci-fi. They both have a large amount of appeal to me, but I will always prefer starships, space battles, phasers, and Klingons over anything else.

Science Fiction, seeing as Fantasy is part of it in my mind.

I like Sci-Fi because I can have lengthy discussions with my friends about what concepts and technologies are theoretically possible.

I am a huge fan of LOTR and The Hobbit, D&D, and MERPs, but if we are talking general fiction, Sci-Fi. It seems to be a deeper more philisophical genre, sure there are adventure stories like the Stainless Steel Rat, but in general sci-fi seems more cerebral and speculative. Just my opinion and what floats my boat though, as I said I'm a big Tolkien Nerd as well.

I prefer Sci-Fi over all though I still greatly enjoy fantasy. Sci-Fi is a genre of 'speculative fiction' and "What if..?", as well as predicting how advancements made today could play out tomorrow. Fantasy is, by and large, a mirror into another interesting but impossible (or even improbable) world.

The notion that the two genres are the same is only true of really light/soft Sci-Fi stuff. Stuff like Star Wars or Warhammer 40K - stuff that is effectively Fantasy with lasers and starships.

Something like Revelation Space, The Forever War, or other true works of Sci-Fi are completely different.
