Farming Simulator 13 tops charts

Doesn't surprise me to be honest. A good sim is a good sim regardless of the subject matter.

How is a Farming Simulator somehow less of a game than, say, The Sims, Sim City, Flight Simulators, Train Simulators, etc?

People equate farming with boredom, but anyone who has ever worked on a farm for any length of time will tell you that it's HARD work, and a LOT of it.

People typically equate HARD work, especially a LOT of it, with boredom.

Yes, I'm going to have to attribute the game's unaccountable popularity to the 'The Bangarang Effect'. Playing it stupidly makes it a great deal funnier and thus more entertaining than if you do it seriously. Doubly so if there's co-op involved. Why, just look at Arma II:

Why would a real farmer make virtual farming money when they could be farming?

Maybe because they love doing so, but don't want to put in the manual labor in the little free time they have. Since a simulator allows you to do all that farming stuff, probably in a faster time frame, without having to move from your seat.
