Hey Escapists.

It's my niece's 5th birthday this year and I wanna make sure she's raised on the classics.

Can you give me some suggestions of your fav movies when you were little?

Definately these. I must also add: The Lion King, Mulan, Aladdin, Bambi, Dumbo, heck all of those old Disney movies.

I'm trying to think now, maybe raid the DVD & video drawer.
I'll get back to you.

Edit: Galaxy Quest!
And Toy Story!

Willy Wonka. The original. Teaches good things about not being a prick.
Jeez, I can't believe how hard of a time I'm having, trying to come up with movies. I feel really out of touch with my childhood now.

No damnit. She must read the book.
OP: If the film is based on the book, make her read it instead. Kids are stupid enough already these days, a healthy interest in reading will be just as good as seeing the classic movies.

I watched Sleeping Beauty, the Rankin/Bass version of The Hobbit, and The Phantom Tollbooth a million times growing up...

Ah yeah, this too.
Also watched Watership Down a fair bit, but I wouldn't recommend that to a person who actually likes the kid they're giving a gift.

Eh, I was regularly watching The Hobbit before I was old enough to read it, and it's effected my taste in entertainment to a large degree.
Let the kid watch the movie, be gently introduced into the genre, then she can read the books when she's old enough.

Ok, I'll let you off. But the books must still be read!

Yep, I was going to get her Land before Time, I searched, I found it, I had it, and mom sent it to her for Easter without my knowledge. GAH!
I think her folks got her most of the Disney movies already. hmm. Good suggestions so far. I don't want to get her something too scary until she's a lil older, but I'm familiar with a lot of the suggestions here so far.

Her parents are.. real stick-in-the muds. I wanna be that cool aunt that sends ya crazy things and ya always look forward to. (Plus, they're real sticky about what gifts they accept. Often returning clothes or hiding toys from her they don't approve of. >_>) Just glad she's over three now and she can voice her own opinion.

Thanks, don't let me stop ya.

The Brave Little Toaster.

It's essentially All three Toy Story Movies until the third one comes out on DVD (I'll even argue where it is all three movies with scenes) but its fantastic. It's got some nightmare fuel for sure, but C'mon, what was Wizard of Oz for years if not Nightmare Fuel with the flying monkeys?
