Favorite genre? Easy RPGs I love me some rpg action. Give me a goood story a bow and I will have a lot of fun, or in TES's case a bow and a really great world(well the bows suck in Morrowind and Oblvion but whatever). I will also play sci-fi like KotOR and Mass Effect.
captcha: garden of eden. No captcha Assassin's creed is not an rpg. Though I do love me some assassin's creed,

I can't stick to one genre, but I liked adventure/platforming games. My favorites were the Ratchet & Clank and Jak series.

In terms of shooters, I'll have to separate single player and multiplayer. The best campaigns I have played are Half Life, XIII and Call of Duty 2/4. If Deus Ex counts then it's also one of the best.

Multiplayer wise, Battlefield 2 is my top choice. Honorable mention to Black Ops, despite it's many flaws it has the addictive properties of crack and honestly it's more balanced than any other CoD.

I'm not here to argue against Spec Ops: The Line because I have done it several times and I'm sort of tired.

But really? The gameplay is subpar and boring on purpose?

Well, kinda. The main themes of the game are the exploration of various mental states, namley PTSD and cognotive dissonance, and tearing down the entire modern warfare gunwank genre. My bet is the devs, Yager, realised they couldn't do top-notch gameplay on the time and budget they had, so instead of wasting time trying to get as close as realistic as they could, they ran with it. The narrative is very dark, but the play is obviously gamey. Obvious spawn points, scripted sequneces, etc etc. They're meant to feel unreal. There are two reasons the gameplay is like this:
1) The player is kinda weirded out by it. You can actually feel through the play that something's not right. If this is supposed to be real, why did that guy just pop out a previously empty box? You can sense the mental disconnect the characters are feeling.
2) The fact that it's so obviously gamey is another strike against modern gunwank games. In any other shooter, you move quickly and fluidly, you often get massive guns, and killing enemies is a joyous activity. In Spec Ops, moving is kinda clunky and dangerous, you're often not too powerful or low on ammo, and killing people is more of a chore, You know, like actual, real life warfare.
Obviously, they didn't TRY to make it bad, and there are some things that other shooters should emulate, like only having to press to sprint, or weapon reticules slowly changing from white to red depending on distance to give a visual shorthand for how much damage you're doing instead of just instantly snapping the red as soon as your crosshairs go over someone. Plus, moral choices often have alternate options that aren't made clear. That bit where you fire on a crowd? You can shoot into the air, and they'll disperse without anyone getting killed. Yager knows their stuff. If they had a bigger budget, I can only dream of what they'd make.
TLDR: Yes. It's too add to the tone and the message of the game. Besides, not all media has to be "fun". Any fan of the thrill of fear that horror provides or the sadness and emptyness brought on by tradegy can tell you that.

I'm the very varied guy. Therefore, I am very much into a number of genres. I can remember playing my first sandbox game (an inFAMOUS 2 demo), and being completely mind-blown in less than a second. I loved the freedom! However, I only have two sandbox games. Them being [Prototype] and Grand Theft Auto III. So, I haven't explored the genre very far.

I suppose I should let them out into two different states.

Anyway, the story was wrapped in a bad gameplay shell.

I never said media had to be fun. Were you still directing that part at me?

Huh. I know the devs weren't too happy with their publisher forcing them to have multiplayer, but I admit, I didn't know they said that specifically. Maybe I am reading into this a fair bit, but nothing wrong with that, right? Good media should give you a lot to think about. Admittedly there are a few things that need polishing, like the cover system, but I'm just saying it's trying to be boring to an extent.

I was, but I withdraw that statement now. Sorry, for a moment there, I thought you were just another Michael Bay-loving COD tard. Reading back, I can tell you have good taste in shooters, given that you listed Half Life and the last good COD game (4) among your favs. I apologise.

Fighting is my favourite genre, and a very special fighting game for me is Melty Blood Actress Again Current Code.

It was my first real venture into anime/poverty fighters, it was the first game I attended regular local gatherings for, and it was the game to get me interested in the visual novel genre.

I love this game to shreds.

For me it's either RPG or (action)adventure games. More than anything, the story, characters and having a big world to explore, carry my gaming experiences.

RPG

Secret of Mana
Final Fantasy 7
Final Fantasy 9
Dragon Age: Origins
Mass Effect

(ACTION) ADVENTURE

Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
Flashback
Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars
Zelda: A Link to the Past
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
Metroid Prime

I'm also doubting if Skyrim belongs in my list.. I'm annoyed by the clunky combat and somewhat poor story, yet for the first time in years, I find myself longing to get home from work so that I can play some more. I suppose that has to count for something?

Recently purchased, but yet not played: Mass Effect 2, Chrono Trigger, The Secret of Monkey Island

Has to be Real Time Strategy for me. Standout games include:

Dune 2 - My first RTS and one of the very first games I played. I played the campaign so many times, even though the only unique weapons were a tank and the superweapons.

Command & Conquer - The use of FMV for the mission briefings and cutscenes blew me away when I first saw them. I still play it from time to time even now.

Total Annihilation - The game that showed me that bigger really is better. Bigger maps, bigger unit counts, bigger battles and a bigger soundtrack thanks to its full orchestral score made it my standout RTS game. I'm really looking forward to getting stuck into Planetary Annihilation, as it looks a lot like TA... But bigger! (and with weaponised asteroids :D).

nothing quite like rolling a harkonen tank into the middle of an atreides base and detonating it was there
Or suddenly realizing that Sonic Tanks do friendly fire and you really shouldn't use them to defend your base...
