The firearm is a tool with a range of applications... I'd never be able to settle on just one.

Carry (be it for self-defense or a show of force):
Open (in uniform):

Concealed (civilian clothes):

as for the why...
Torture Test [http://www.theprepared.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=90]
Range, with meaty recoil (insert pithy crap about zombies or militia defense against invasion if you must):

If you think the Enfield has seen a lot of wars... may I present the Mosin [http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/Mosinprimer.htm]
Range, plinking (also rodent/bird pest control):

With these, it's all about price vs quality. The Savage MkII FV is pricey for a .22, but I like to be able to reliably hit a crow from 100 yards.
As for the Taurus (model 941)... it was cheap, but it's well-made. Accurate and reliable, but that's the absolute baseline for a revolver.
Suppressive fire:

one of those was my baby for a couple of years
Mass destruction:

Another that needs no introduction. That's for good reason.

I never babied these... several of them were under my care, though.

Honorable mention (I actually use one of these as a single-shot deer rifle)

Wikipedia's abbreviated history on the subject [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Type_99_rifle]
...I got one of the nice ones... for $100 at a gun show, though the firing pin was blunted and the finish was gone on the stock. $50 and some TLC fixed her right up.

the sheer power of the Taurus Raging Judge
Hey? Isn't it just a .410/45LC, which can take Casull rounds?
Ok mostly I look how it LOOKS powerful. Like I said I've never fired a gun, but that thing looks like a handcannon if I've ever seen one.
I just bought one of these not too long ago. SO MUCH FUN. But be ready for that .454 recoil. Shooting a .45LC in it with the weight of that thing feels like you're shooting a .22lr, but that .454 comes out of nowhere.

Anyway, my pride and joy is my Norinco NDM-86 (Chinese Type 79, reverse engineered and improved SVD, chambered in .308):

Mmm, look at those lines ;) Functional work of art.
But if I had to pick just one favorite to hang onto for the ages, none other then a simple, elegant tool, the Glock 19.

The world's first really successful semi-automatic handgun. I mostly like it for its very distinct look, though I am also impressed by its versatility (note how the wooden holster doubles as a detachable stock, effectively turning the weapon into a short-barreled but perfectly good carbine!)

The construction is also brilliant - the weapon can be completely disassembled and reassembled without tools of any kind. It's like a deadly puzzle box!

Oh, and it came in a MULTITUDE of varieties! Highlights include a fully automatic version (dubbed 'Schnellfeuer', because German is an awesome language), and a full carbine version (extra-long barrel and non-detachable stock. These were issued to Wehrmacht motorcycle troopers...)

Oooooooohhhhhhhhhhh yeah.
Also, fed from clips. I like the idea of clips for handguns, to annoy people upset about people getting clip and magazine mixed up.
Almost bought one of these not long ago. I'd LOVE to be able to find a Shanxi Type 17 in .45 or a Shanghai Police Dept. issue C96 Bolo at a decent price. Was going to trade a DWM P08 Luger for one that ended up being a mismatch in rough shape so I didn't go for it. Ended up trading that Luger for the Raging Judge Magnum shown in my above post.

I second the P90 as most badass gun, I would totally purchase one if the ammo wasn't aomething ridiculous like $1 per round.

It is also ambidextrous, which I think would be useful for me. I am told that although I am right-handed, I should shoot firearms left-handed because I am strongly left-eye dominant. Can anyone confirm this?

Grant fucking Page! The stunt man. You just made my day sir.

I like a good horse opera. So I pick a Navy Colt, preferably made out of three different pistols and worn on a lanyard around the neck.

EDIT: As an Australian I feel I should mention "The *****" as favored by the Australian SAS in Vietnam. Take an L1A1 (FN FAL) convert to full auto and add a thirty round mag. Now that barrel is way too long for jungle warfare so shorten it so the rifle is about the same length as an M4 carbine. Good, now it sounds like a .50 cal machine gun and spits 7.62 Nato rounds at 700 rpm. Still needs something more though, so you better add a 40mm grenade launcher. Voila! You now have a "***** gun".

I have a weird thing for the cold, precise look of the H&K .45 USP.

Pistols in general have a certain...professional and efficient feel to them, I think, and that one in particular. They're restrained, measured, controlled. I prefer that over sheer firepower.
I agree with you there. HK anything and the Walther P99 are fantastic pistols. They don't try to be anything other than what they are. Nothing added to them for flair, fear, or anything. They are simply made to be practical and deadly and that's what their look reflects.

I was about to yell at you for calling it a clip and then I read your last sentence. lol

I can tolerate it if you at least know the difference.

I too, know next to nothing about guns.

Still though, I've always had a love for this thing. I have no idea why the Famas F1 grabs my attention the way it does, but I love the bullpup design, where the bullets are ejected from, and the location of handle to load a new bullet, just under the sight. It's different, but it also has that sci-fi feel to it, you know? Maybe that's it. Not to mention, he's a little underrated, and has a built-in sight for the grenade launcher attachment that nobody ever thinks about. Hell, the bi-pod's also built in from what I can tell, but games omit it because then the player would expect to use it.

I really like versatility. I want something to be excellent in everything, and the Famas reflects that. I did some research for this post, so now I know that it needs it's own special ammo and it's going to be replaced by the AUG, but the AUG looks and feels pretty sweet too.

Isn't it the magazines which aren't standard, the ammunition is? Which must be a pain.

(Having said that, the normal AUG is made for European ammunition, and the Austeyr variant is made for US ammunition, which uses different propellant just to make logistics that much harder. The ammunition is interchangeable, but you get better results with the one your weapon is rifled for)

Okay, first off: I've never fired a real firearm in my life, most I've done is hold some of them on a air-show.

But whatever leTS DO THIS HOOPERSCOTCH

I'm just a sucker for battle rifles, and the almost hunter-like shape of this legendary rifle is both functionality and coolness in one package.

From 100% american to the complete polar opposite. This ultra silent rifle has a rather short effective range of only 300 meters (328yards), but it compensates that by having an absolutely vicious 9mm subsonic round that can easely kill an armored target at that range. The subsonic round means that apart from having a silencer for a barrel, its bullets also avoid the usual supersonic crack that can give away your position. Truly, a special forces rifle.

I don't own any guns currently but I Las Vegas I fired a MP-40 and a P38 at the range. Mp-40 was fun gun and very accurate in my amateur hands but one day I would like to own a P38. Which is nice because in my country, it is a legal pistol as long as I take up shooting as a hobby.

My favourite looking weapon is the LA85A2. I love how it looks and the British soldiers I met in Halifax had nothing but praise for it. Plus in BF4 I use it to amazing effect.

Bolt-Action: K31
Fires as fast as the Enfield No.4 (the only Enfield I've fired), but far more accurate. However it loses out to the Enfield in rounds per minute because of the smaller mag. Also, other than the stock, most K31's I've seen tend to be in better condition than the Mausers, Mosin-Nagants, Enfields, and Springfields of the era. Still can be found for $300 if you know where to look.

Semi-auto: AR-15
Fairly cheap, easy to modify, ubiquitous parts, and are set to a standard so a lot of parts from different manufacturers are interchangeable (though they don't always fit great.) Also, despite their reputation otherwise, they aren't terribly hard to maintain. It fires a light cheap (use to be anyways) round that's still powerful enough to take small game. That being said, I prefer bolt-actions over semi's and most states frown on it being used for hunting.

Pistol: Springfield XD Compact .40S&W
Does everything I want a handgun to do at a reasonable price. It also fits my hand better than my second choice, which is the M1911a1. I also love the Luger P.08, but I can't afford one in the condition I want.

Shotgun: Winchester Model 1912
Spits out shot as fast as you can rack the slide and you don't lose out on the sweet racking sound like you would on a Saiga 12. :) My only issue with it is getting one is good condition cost an arm and a leg anymore, which is why I own a Saiga 12 instead of a Winchester 1912 :(

I'm going to pick guns from a certain game that do not exist irl but were probably based off guns from irl. Some of them, at least...

Generic name, badass gun. You can rapid fire, but charging a shot gives the best results on the battlefield. You can brign up a bullet shield, at the cost of ammo and some of your vision.

Yes, that's a giant clusterbomb-spewing revolver.

One of my favourite guns from TS3. So satisfying to use and a snazzy reload.

No snazzy reload, though. :(

SBP90.

SBP500. Or as I like to call it, OP. They're both OP. You can wield two of the first one. Timesplitters was batshit crazy, sometimes.

Presumed the "Kronia Submachinegun", it was custom built, and can fire rockets just like the M1 garand, which it appears to have used the barrel of. The M1 is one of my favourite real-life guns, as cliche as it is.

Sorry for the shitty screenshots, I'd take some better ones myself, but frankly, it's time I was in bed. :L
There's no TS1 guns because TS1 guns were not all that fun to use. Too much auto-aim.

I should mention the TS3 Flare gun is the reason I can't enjoy the TF2 Flare guns.

Damn, son...dat TS3 Soviet rifle, though! Looks like it was based on the FN FAL...I could be wrong, though; I've seen quite a few by different names that have its general shape. I think it's properly referred to as a "battle rifle", but then again, the only place I've come across that name is in Borderlands. :p

The SBP90...reminds me of the RCP90 from Goldeneye 007. It was apparently named as a joke by the developers...and it was an absolute hellcat. There was one of those widow-makers hidden in a crate in the early part of the train level. Ai...

That last one reminds me very faintly of the StG 44 [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/StG_44] in shape.

I'm quite a fan of the odd-looking Sterling and Sten SMGs, myself; they've got quite the rugged and simplistic "militia" look to them.

Chalk another up for the Ma Deuce (M2 .50 Cal HMG) and the M-14 (although I only like those in wood, not the plastic they have become).

Some others on the list include:
Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) [Browning Automatic Rifle]: 20 round mag of .30-06 full rifle round death. However, it was HEAVY (about 17 lbs)
Henry .44 Rifle [Henry .44 Rifle]: Shoots .44 Magnum, the brass makes it look awesome, and it carried a 15 round mag (which was pretty big by 1860's standards)
AA-12 Shotgun [aa12 shotgun]: Drum mag fed, full-auto Shotgun. For when everything must die, and you dont care about silly made-up things like "Overkill" and "Excessive Force".
M1911A1 Pistol [M1911a1 pistol]: One of the most recognized guns in the world. As for the ammo, as the bumper-sticker around here goes: ".45 ACP. Because shooting twice is just silly."

The COP357, because multiple barreled weapons are cool:

Some place in Japan makes model of these with longer barrels, which look cool, but probably wouldn't be practical.

Similarly, the SPP-1 Underwater Pistol

The Cobray Pocket Pal. A revolver with two barrels, can fires .380ACP, or .22LR, depending on which cylinder you put in.

Taurus Judge, because it can fire .410 shot or .45LC.

Likewise, the Taurus Circuit Judge, which is the same with a longer barrel and stock, making it a rifle/shotgun. This is the "Tactical" version, because painting something black makes it tactical, despite...everything. Also, the gases escaping from the sides of the cylinder are more of a problem with long arm revolvers.

Now...I'd like to see someone combine the ideas for the Judge and the Pocket Pal, give you all sorts of things you can shoot from it without changing barrels.

Likewise, .410/45LC derringer...doesn't matter which model, to me.

I just like the idea of break open weapons you can stick all sorts of rounds in, without having to worry about feeding issues of the thing being too long, so, the Over and Under shotgun. Doesn't matter to me what gauge or model, just the versatility. OTOH, I guess a rolling block shotgun would work as well.

5.7x28mm isn't THAT bad price-wise.
http://www.gunbot.net/ammo/pistol/57x28/

The P90 (or civvy PS90) is a damn fun firearm, and not only good for righties or lefties, but that ability lets you swap shoulders with it. Also, little known, are the iron sights built into either side on the upper portion of the receiver flanking the rail/optic, so you get an iron sight no matter your hand/eye configuration.

So much fun at the range.

Also, since you're cross dominant (right hander, left eye dominant), you'll most likely want to learn to shoot left handed/left shoulder. Here's a good article on it from an instructor's standpoint:
https://www.usconcealedcarry.com/the-cross-dominant-shooter/
As it mentions, you run into it more often then you'd think.

I've fired a few of my uncle's guns up in New Hampshire.
Saiga 12K shotgun: Oddly manageable recoil.
S&W M29 revolver: Good power, fun to shoot, but not the kind of thing you want to use for home defense.
Ruger Mk I: Good .22 LR.
