I'm a huge sucker for those that have either a really cool guitar track or just amazing vocals. Everything on this list I listen to outside of the beginning and endings of episodes.

Sadly, since some of Japan's entertainment industry are assholes and think only they should be aloud to listen their music. I have to provide a soundcloud link. https://soundcloud.com/mixordia/unknown-vision-akino-arai

Some notable mentions would be Noucome's ending, Highschool DxD New's first opening, and Kenzen Robo Diamidaler's ending.
SAO's opening would be called "Crossing Field" by LiSA, she also did Mahouka's first opening called "Rising Hope" last season if you're watching that. She and GARNiDELiA are the the only J-Pop artists i've taken note of by name in that if someone told me that LiSA did an opening for an anime I haven't seen I would probably check it out by default. GARN seem to have really increased their presence in anime lately I feel, I guess Kill la Kill's stellar second opening did wonders for them.

I am a tad disappointed that SAO 2's opening isn't done by LiSA again but they passed the torch to GARNiDELiA (I think) so it's not bad.

Speaking of which:

For all the shit SAO gets, not all of it undeserved admittedly, I still enjoy it and the second season has at least done the same thing as the first in that the first three episodes are really, really good (that justified self defence yo'.) Now to see that excuse next episode for why Kirito genderswapped himself in GGO for... Reasons. Besides that the writer just felt like it of course. He's also going to build a melee character in a shooter because of reasons too.

I heavily recommend No Game No Life. Seriously the best anime to come out by miles last season and it's the most fun i've had for ages.

I just watched the first Aquarion and Evol over the last couple of weeks (and loved them so much even though they're horrible), both soundtracks are amazing, as expected since Yoko Kanno did them.

The first opening from the first series is apparently still super popular in Japan even though no one's cared about the show since like 2006

But I think the first opening from Evol is at least on par, if only because of pure balls-out 80s/90s cheese, which is totally my thing

And the first ending from Evol is just unironically great

Honestly, I have so much music from Japan it's not funny. A very large portion of it (like 100GB) is from anime alone. So I'll just list some stuff here that I don't expect others to list and call it a day.

Anything iDOLM@STER:

The opening these to Mikakunin de Shinkoukei is super catchy.

I really love the Soul Eater NOT! opening too.
I just love chilled out, happy vocals and music like this.

Also, this post would be incomplete without some Touhou music.

Off topic: Ummm How do you link youtube videos directly in the feed instead of giving the web address? (he asks sheepishly)

On Topic: Basically every SINGLE opening from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure as well as the sheer awesomeness that is the battle music between Jonathan and DIo! Decisive battle Overlapping Destinies!

As for entire anime soundtracks you can't separate me from the smooth, cool jazz of Cowboy Bebop

and the wub-heavy beats of Gatchaman Crowds.

Although my absolute favourite soundtrack for anime can be none other than Berserk

Atrocious opening theme aside this anime has some of the most atmospheric music I have ever heard, with this track being my all time favourite

My favourite would be from Hunter x Hunter 2011 [sup]obvious answer is obvious[/sup]

Kingdom of Predators would top the list as it fits really well with certain part in the Chimera Ant arc

Runner up would be New Mutation. The first time I heard really set the build up and beginning for the CA arc especially when the narrator introduced the Ants: A prologue to unparalleled fear was quietly, but steadily unfolding

I forgot to add:

[C] OST
Cashern Sins:

I have the soundtrack for the live action Casshern movie. Damn that movie has some amazing music.

I must most of you are thinking way too small. Usually when I evaluate a show's soundtrack I look at the overall soundtrack and not the OP/ED. I don't understand why people obsess over the OP/ED so much. Without an overall good soundtrack you can't really fully appreciate a show. I wish Hollywood would understand that.

I've got a few mixes that I really like:

Attack on Titan Minimix: (half hour)

About 30 minutes of really action-y music; (well, perhaps 25 minutes of action-y music, and then the last one is a bit slower) lots of drums, big brass, with some electric guitar and chanting.

Naruto Music Compilation: (1 hour)

Say what you will about the anime; (though I'd call it under appreciated) the music is pretty awesome. I think the mixing of oriental flavor with modern stuff like electric guitar is pretty sweet; it both fits the anime and sounds cool.

1-Hour Epic Anime Mix:

Best general mix of anime music I've found, from a decent variety of anime.

Also for a single song, I'll throw out Magia from Madoka Magica (you should watch it), particularly the German version, which I think fits even better than the original.

Recently got back into music from dotHack//SIGN thanks to a thread on here. Basically, the best part of the entire thing is the music.

I second .hack//Sign.

The music is just insanely good. I actually bought the CD for it back in the day and I never buy CD's.
