Flat Duo Jets.

Whilst the world was obsessed with "grunge", the Duo Jets were playing 50's rock 'n' blues...with a healthy dose of surf thrown in.

I can't get enough.

I would have to say Rise Against and Thrice. Both because they do heavy and soft so well, their lyrics relate so well to situations I am going through, and because they just freaking rock!

Iron Maiden, one of the greatest metal bands ever.

So awesome they have 3 lead guitarists. Plus amazing vocals, solid bass lines, and epic riffs, with a drummer thrown in.

Arcade Fire- Created one of the best sounds a band has made in the past 30 years.
Queen- Mixed so many cool elements of music into rock and roll that still seems ahead of its time.
Prince and the Revolution(yes this counts)- Their album Purple Rain is one of the greatest pop-rock albums ever, so addicting yet so beautiful.
Aerosmith- Wonderfully mixed funky classic rock with a soul feeling of music that is just too awesome.
Florence + the Machine- Wonderful band that shows great musical progress when it comes to the alternative genre.
Pink Floyd- Dark Side of the Moon.... that is all.
Led Zeppelin- Pure classic rock at its best.
The Beatles- 95% of the factors of good music can be found in this band, and the best part is they were only around for nine years.

Hmmmmm... favorite bands. Well I usually don't think of specific bands as my "favorite" but I guess there are some that I like more than others.

And those are:
- Rammstein; One I got into recently, but really like. Awesome music with anything from the harder "Feuer Frei" to the softer (but no less awesome) "Ohne Dich". And the lyrics are quite good as well with some nice wordplay. Understanding some German also helps with my enjoyment of their music.

- Muse; For a three man band they can get some nice musical depth to their songs (don't know the technical term for it though...). Plus their music is just plain awesome to listen too.

- Depeche Mode; Not that much of a fan of their earlier stuff, but I really like the tone (lyrically) and sound of a lot of their songs. And whether its the classic "Personal Jesus" or their newer "Wrong" I can still listen to them in most situations.

- They Might Be Giants; These are just fun to listen too. I'll listen to them when I'm in a lighter mood.

My favourite band or artist tends to change over time but there are a few constants in my life:

NOFX - Any band that can get away with the shit they've been pulling for nearly 30 years is made of fucking gods. 'Nuff said.

RX Bandits - Progressive ska-punk that exudes incredible wit and maturity. Beautiful melodies combined with often angry instruments makes for compelling listening. Probably one of my favourites bands of all time, just below NOFX.

Streetlight Manifesto - One of the happiest, yet lyrically poignant, ska-bands in my collection. Lead singer/guitarist, Tomas Kalnoky, has a very good thing going with his speedy vocals. They're also one of the best live bands I've seen.

Death By Stereo - Politically minded metalcore that utilises punk, metal and melodic elements to great effect. A band that helped shape me as a young teenager.

Therapy? - One of my all-time underrated bands. I always forget about the Irish rockers, but whenever I go back to them I love every second of every song. Dark, tragic but also beautiful and often hilarious, Therapy? will always have a special place in my heart.

Astronautalis - Simply a singer/songwriter but I'm putting him here because he deserves mention. Somethign completely different to my usual music tastes, this guy is a rap/indie artist with some incredible skills at freestyle and songwriting. His Latest album 'Pomegranete' is one of the greatest albums I've ever heard, with amazing song themes and some genuinely original lyrics. The fact that he's part of a genre that I usually avoid makes Astronautalis an incredibly significant artist in my life.

Wow, that's a tough one. I have several, for various reasons. These aren't presented in any real order, just thrown out there as and when I remember them.

1) Michael Jackson. Yes yes, get the Paedophile jokes out of the way, I was a fan of his, before the world had heard of Jordan Chandler. Bad was the first of his albums that I came to in the late 80s as a 4-6 year old. I liked the voice and started to listen to more and more Michael over the years. I've been through highs and lows with his music, as with the revelations about his private life, including pulling over in floods of tears the day after he died, when "I just can't stop loving you" came on my iPod. Varied music, one incredible man and one of my biggest regrets is that I never got to see him play live.

2) Alice Cooper. What would my teenage years have been like without Uncle Alice? Rock music got me at just the right time and with a combination of Alice and Queen, I was set for an interesting few years leading up to my University days, when I spent the nights combating the X Files theme at 3am with loud renditions of "It's the Little Things" at the top of my lungs, with the stereo cranked up.

The showman is truly that - the lord of the underworld, the master of disaster and the doc of shock. Guillotines, murders, grisly things happening to him on stage every night and still he comes back for more. What else could you want?

3) Iron Maiden. Up the Irons! Well, I've listened on and off to Maiden for about 2 decades, then in about 2006, I suddenly got serious with it and bought most of their albums, after becoming intoxicated with Bruce Dickinson's amazing vocals. Their inspiration led me to audition for a lead singer for a Metal Band, but we'll see if anything else comes up soon, as I didn't get that gig. I'm off to see them in Birmingham in July, so that will be awesome.

There are other bands which qualify as worthy mentions here, such as Weird Al, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Reel Big Fish, The Who, Metallica, John Denver and perhaps a few more, but, as a man with an eclectic musical taste, I've covered it in three awesome acts.

My favourite BAND will always be Rush. They go a long way back for me. I've always loved them in some way or the other, no matter where the road has taken me. And now, when I'm a wee bit older and... ehm.. wiser I can appreciate their lyrics and technique at a new level.

Queens of the Stone Age - (See above, but to a lesser extent)
I'm obliged as a Kyuss fan to tell you, seeing as you like QOTSA, that Kyuss are like them but better in every way, seriously give them a listen man. It was Josh Homme's first band.

Metallica, Because of Cliff Burton, and James Hetfield. Cliff was the best bassist I have ever heard, and James can come up with some awesome riffs.

Avenged Sevenfold, because they have a lot of different songs, so it'll never get old, and all the band members are really good at what they do.

Godsmack. What a band. Just a hard rocking, solid band. Great riffs, beats, and lyrics all around.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - They are the reason i first goto into music, the reson i started to play guitar and the reason i formed a band. They have a huge range of different songs, the best bassist in the world, still alive and writing and one of the best and most underrated guitarists guitarists in modern music. Most of all they make me smile, they are the music i listen to when it feels like the whole world is against me.

Pink Floyd, The Beatles and Led Zeppelin- Between the three the have defined and shaped all modern music (mainly rock)

Radiohead- Ok Computer and kid A are possibly the two best and most relistenable albums ever.

Biffy Clyro, Silversun Pickups and Muse - Awesome and varied structure, themes, lyrics and sound and a great live show
Mogwai, Queens of the stoneage, Franz Ferdinand, System of a Down,

i could go on but i should stop now

My favorite bands (in no particular order):

The Beatles
Specifically, the later years. And do I really need a reason for liking the Beatles at this point? They influenced music so much, they CREATED A FREAKIN' GENRE.

Marilyn Manson
Marilyn Manson is really the Ugly Duckling in my list of favorite bands, because I really don't like any other metal. But Manson's painstakingly written, unbelievably awesome/true lyrics that I happen to connect with. Not to mention his rockin' guitar solos.

Beck
Beck is genre-defying. One album is a smooth R&B piece, the next a droopy break-up album, the next a super-rockin' Mexican LP. But no matter what genre he's currently in, he always has these really trippy lyrics that resound with me in a way that no other artist can.

All of this, plus the fact that they have genuinely interesting and original lyrics/songs, kickass cover art, and they got to where they are today on the strength of their own talent, without much in the way of help from the media. Up the irons indeed.

Otherwise:

Sabaton are original, with some really powerful, rousing songs - good for running playlists. Manowar are the definition of power, and strangely uplifting. Holyhell - well, they're just good.
