The Battle of Camerone. A crushing defeat of the French Foreign Legion by native soldiers (in mexico) shows you everything there is to know about war. From The utter pointlessness of it all to the uselessness of heroics on both sides. I'm sure most any battle can do that, however.

From a fictional setting, The battle of the Pellenor Fields from Return of the King.

Historically I'd say Agincourt was one of the most noteworthy purely because the French, if they'd stopped to think should have won.

Personal Fight:
This kid Robert was talking shit so I punched him in the face and threw him into a wall.

Individual Fight:
This kid Ian got pushed by this kid Pat so he grabs Pat and punches him in the face 3 times, I think broke his nose. This just happened today to.

Fantasy Fight:
Helms deep, I know someone beat me to it, but it is amazing.

What, nobody's mentioned Thermopylae, Rorkes Drift, or Cannae yet? For shame.

Rorkes Drift because we beat like 10,000 Zulu warriors with about 100 men.
actually, it was only about 4000, give or take the odd hundred here or there, still an awesome undertaking though

Battle of Stalingrad.

Composed mostly of conscripts and a civilian resistance, they ended up enclosing and crushing their German aggressors.

History
Far too many to choose from, some great ones mentioned already (Cannae, Midway, Issus, Thermopylae). Will get back to you on that.

Fiction
Used to be Siege of Gondor (book version of events, but film for of awesome); but now it has to be the (essentially) running battle that is the Chain of Dogs in Steven Erikson's Deadhouse Gates (part of the Malazan Book of the Fallen series).

Serious respect for the Engineers in that one (the "bridge trick", and creating an artificial hill for the cavalry and so on). Plus the awesomeness of the whole concept (and the execution too).

The Battle of Charm from Glen Cook's the Chronicles of the Black Company. Over a quarter of a million dead at the end of the fighting.
