If we're talking about the single-player element of a predominently multiplayer game (seems a lot of people are missing that point) I'd have to go for MW2. It may not have made any fucking sense, but it was big, loud and crazy.

StarCraft II :) just love it ^^ and cant wait for heart of the swarm :D
Mass Effect 2 - the start was just mind blowing :D
Starwars: Knights of the old Republic - just epic story

when you say campaign in my mind it replies to the singleplayer of anygame that has a singleplayer... its the story mode of the game if you will

At least the campaign is one thing about MW2 people dont complain about...

OT: I'd have to say Brothers In Arms Hells Highway, the story was so well written and the characters, give me a second ....have a PERSONALITY!

Red Dead Redemption - you spend the entire time hunting down your old friends to save your family, only to have it all be for nothing. You even find out the angel of death (the stranger) has destined you to meet your end and hints at it coming. Also the great sense of justice at the end where Jack gets revenge for his father.

Pacing, imagery and characters you actually feel for make it a great experience
I agree. Although I'd call the stranger "god" because in the last task for him
John shouts "DAMN YOU!" and the stranger replies "Many have" Who damns the angel of death? But tons of people have said goddamit.
Also does FAllout 3 count? I mean that was a pretty cool story and stuff. Geuss its not a campaign though huh?

My gut reaction is Red Dead Redemption but given more time I'd probably change my mind.

Also going to chime in that I loved the campaign in MW2. It's so fucking ridiculous and over the top, just completely sidesteps logic, and has a dude with a sweet mustache. If it were a movie I'd pan the shit out of it, but I kinda feel like the Michael Bay approach works when applied to video games.

Don't take MW2 seriously, of course, but it's explosive fun.

edit

fuck me, I can't believe I didn't say Planescape: Torment. I rescind everything previously said and substitute that game in it's place.

Homeworld, of course.

Following that... the Halo games or the Mass Effect games. Usually depending on which of them I'm currently playing and what day of the week it is.

After that, Metroid Fusion.

EDIT: Misread. Disregard all except Homeworld and Halo.

True - there is a discussion on here about it with the video too. He could be either really but I prefer to call him the angel of death because all of his appearances/actions are related to john's death (his final appearance is where john is later buried etc) and the missions he gives all govern over killing someone or letting them live.

Uncharted 2. The entire thing felt like a AAA action movie with me as the star. Everything was perfectly choreographed, and it was flat-out-fun the entire time.

That said, even Uncharted 2 falls short compared to the Mass Effects, Dragon Age, Red Dead Redemption, KoToR, but we're not allowed to say those, apparently.

Gotta agree with you, Ratchet and Clank 3: Up Your Arsenal is probably my favourite game for the PS2. I'm just super pissed at it for it not letting me get 100% in it. My game constantly freezes at a cut-scene before my last titanium bolt.
Aww that sucks!
HA, its called up your arsenal where you are? I undestand why they didnt call it that in England.

Recently? Probably Transformers: War for Cybertron. It's just God's gift to a childhood TF fan.

Batman: Arkham Asylum, Medal of Honor and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow are pretty good candidates as well.

Older games? The Homeworld, Total War and Close Combat series had some pretty epic campaigns.

Could I say Half-Life 2 and its episodes together? It takes an incredible amount of skill to make levels that are strictly linear, and yet really interesting at the same time. Of course the episodes just added on to the brilliant story, which is also amazing that a game with a mute protagonist has such an involving story.

In regards to gameplay only, Uncharted 2, even though I didn't finish it. Everything just worked so well and every part of the game was awesome.

However, for a game with more substance than fun(like strong emotional attachment to characters and the like), it'd be harder for me to choose, but if anyone knows me it's probably going to be a JRPG.

I've got crazy ADD, so the issue of campaigns is kind of sketchy as I usually get bored part way through. I must go to games like the Elder Scrolls/Fallout series where you can ignore what you're supposed to do and just go running off in a random direction whenever you see something shiny in the distance.
