I recently watch Satoshi Kons Paprica, and was struck by several of the character designs, especially of the title character. They were simple and understated, and yet strangely eye popping and interesting, and seemed to capture the characters personalities. I think it was the use of color that impressed me. It was subtle, but memorable.

I also loved the designs from Persona 4. Everything about the characters was visually appealing, and told you about their personalities. A distinct look can make a character more memorable, and make them stand out, as well as add to characterization. Persona looks almost fashionable, and yet each character is unique, and looks like what a real person would probably look like, albeit one that had a good style. Chie looks like a proper tom boy and Yukiko looks like a pricess, and both of their designs reinforce that.

I also like Kaneda, from Akira. The sleek red jacket and motorcycle make him one of the more memorable anime protagonists. They say the clothes make the man, and that's certainly the case with AKIRA.

Finally I really like the look of Haruko from flcl, even though I disliked the show and aspects of her character. The red jacket, short pixie cut, moped, and guitar just make her look... well, for want of a better word, COOL. She immediately stood out from a design standpoint, which is important, given her attitude. She looked like the kind of person you'd see at a rock concert.

So, which characters from a film, book, comic, game, show, or anime really stood out to you, or told you a great deal about a character without having to say a word.

Geralt of Rivia. Probably the reason why I chose him for my avatar. The guy just reeks badass from his equipment, to the long white hair, facial scarring and those sweet cat eyes. Well, at least in the first game. As practical as it may be in combat, putting his hair in a ponytail in the second was... really meh. But yeah, the way he has his swords across his back (impractical, true, but looks great) and his elixirs on his shoulder strap and everything, the heads of slain beasts on his belt. He just looks fucking wicked.

A second runner up would be Michael LeRoi, from Shadowman (the first one, on PC). A bald African-American voodoo warrior with eyes glowing from shadowy power and a literal mask of shadow knitted into his chest, as well as tattoos that grant him ancient blood magic over fire. One of the coolest looking characters I've seen, and it's a shame African voodoo isn't incorporated more in games.

The Shredder. The version from the '80's cartoon. I love that design. Simplistic and cool.

I have a great love for the designs of Takashi Nakamura. Specifically the ones from Peter Pan no Bouken...

It's like a great mixture between Hayao Miyazaki and Katsuhiro Otomo. It feels very solid yet cartoony. Coincidentally Nakamura worked as an animation director on Akira as well.

Also, Brad Bird.

I know he doesn't design all the characters himself, but he does sign off on them. And the character designs from The Iron Giant and The Incredibles are some of my favourite.

And obviously I can't leave out Bruce Timm...

...and Dean Yeagle.

I suppose the extent to which she is a 'character' is up to debate, but I love the design of FFX's Anima to bits.

Most of Metal Gear Solid's designs are great. But the one and only Snake always takes the cake for me:

Snake's design is just too perfect. He looks cool, he fits the protagonist look, and although he was based on an existing character from a cheesy late 80's movie, he still managed to retain this interesting persona throughout. Not to mention that it never matters what sneaking suit he wears, because it always screams him. His face and whatever he wears just DEFINES iconic.

And he has quite possibly the most well-designed badonkadonk in fiction. Just try to argue with me that it isn't...

I'm also a huge fan of Deadpool's, Dante's, Bayonetta's, Spike Spiegel's, and a huge number of Jojo character's designs.
I'm actually one of the few people who prefer Araki's Jojo redesigns over his beefy North Star ripoffs. They simply fit the tone and fashion better.

Just wanted to add my absolute favorite design from a Brad Bird film to this.

I wish there was a word for people who look both how they sound and how they act.

That's early 80's movie. And I'm sure the MGS games are even cheesier.
