Persia. I've always liked Persian culture in general, and they usually get some really valuable bonuses. I also like China, France, and Japan. 5 surprised me pleasantly with the Polynesians. Their ability to expand so widely so early was really awesome.

On the flip side. I've always hated Egypt, and it's annoyed me to no end how they get the exact bonuses I want in every single civ game. Especially in 3. I hated that they got Religious and Industrious. Add to that list the US because it feels so out of place, Greece because of its leaders, and Rome because it means no Italy ever.

Seriously, I just want to play Italy.

Hmm... That's tough one, I rarely play as the same Civilization more than once, I tend to enjoy trying out new styles of gameplay, so it's fun to try out different ones.

That said, from a historical perspective I do have a few favorites:

Byzantium (The Eastern Roman Empire): I actually really hate the name "Byzantium", it's an ahistorical label applied to them long after they fell to distance them from their Roman roots. In reality they're the Roman Empire of the Middle Ages, even though the Western half fell, the Eastern and never stopped being "Rome," so it's not really a separate empire at all. The Medieval Roman Empire is one of my favorite periods in history as I'm guessing you can tell, and I find it sad that so few people really acknowledge it.

The Shoshone and the Iroquois: I really like that they included some North American Native Civilizations, it's rare that pre-Colombian North American Civilizations get any recognition at all, so it's nice to see some get included in Civ 5, even if it's only in the DLC. Honestly I wish they got more inclusion, since there were more than two notable civilizations in North America.

Songhai, Mali, Morocco, the Zulu and Ethiopia: Similarly to how I'm fond of the Native American Civilizations because they tend to get less recognition it's nice to see some African Civilizations get the spotlight as well. At least ones aside from Egypt, which is usually the only African Civilization people tend to pay attention to. Africa had some really impressive civilizations and peoples, but they rarely get any attention, and honestly the game is still skewed in favor of European civilizations, at least as far as recognition goes, but it still nice to see a few featured.

Egyptian: This is less from a historical perspective and more because I tend to like building Wonders and thus anyone who gives me a bonus for doing so is just aces in my book.

Wow. I wrote a lot, didn't I? I'm really interested in history, so I can go on a bit when talking about it.

For 5 I tend towards Japan due to some of the changes in how units and government work. In most of the earlier ones I tended to go with the Aztecs due to the bonuses they had since I tend for the strategy of wiping out a couple of civs early and then burning the remainders down one by one keeping the others as allies. Funniest thing to me with the earlier ones was having a diplomat, the 0/0/1 unit take out a tank and a couple rifle units in defense.

Well I've only really played Civ V, so I can only give my opinion on that game... which is Casimir (Poland). Whilst he doesn't have the most ridiculous bonus in the game (Hello Babylon and Korea), his social policy per era is effective no matter which victory mode you go for and you can easily take a good policy from one tree early on whilst still focusing on the tree you actually want. Plus the Ducal Stables and Winged Hussars are pretty nice too.

Apart from him, I really liked playing Polynesia before Brave New World came out so I could mass culture from Maoi's on archipelago and just dominate the game. Also, Persia is pretty cool.
