Despite being rather useless, I'm gonna say sawn-off shotgun. There's just something about catching a mirelurk up close and blast it's head through the other side of its carapace.

I have to agree with you op, i think for me it is the mixture of the accuracy and power of a fully repaired hunting rifle that made it my weapon of choice (plus i quite like the sound it makes).
Added to that, if you manage to get a sneak attack bonus to the head, i find it is one of the best guns in the game. I called mine Lucy :D
However for them moments where i found myself in a bit of trouble i always resorted to my trusty Chinese Assault Rifle, which in my opinion is much better than the basic AR

Tough choice between the minigun and the fatboy.

I mean come on. A giant catapult that launches nukes?! what a recipe for disaster!

At first it was the hunting rifle, since it could be acquired very early on in the game. Then it was the scoped .44 magnum, and then Lincoln's repeater when I found that. Since .44 is relatively scarce, I switched to the lever-action rifle from Point Lookout when I ran out.

I could go for the weapon I think is the coolest (which is the Perforator when combined with my 100% sneak skill and Chinese Stealth Armor, pretty much means an instant critical every time) but I don't think that counts much as my favourite, even though I use it often.

For my favourite (as in the weapon I will most commonly reach for in a tight scrape) is any version of the AER9 Laser Rifle. It's a standard weapon but it's pretty good in a lot of situations depending on which version you're using, like the Tri-Beam, Metal Blaster or Wazer Wifle. None have ever failed me and ammo is very common and easy to find, it's also a commonly looted weapon and easily repaired.

Although there are weapons that do more damage, have better accuracy or do cooler things; the AER9 is the signature, bread-and-butter weapon of the game and, in my opinion, the best weapon you can get your hands on in terms of reliability, ease of use and fantastic design.

The hardest parts to get are the motorcycle handbrake and gas tank, the most common place to find them (and the easiest) is on the flight deck of Rivet City next to the broken motorbike. The other parts are all-too-common, you should be able to pick them up anywhere. The Schematics are easily stolen from Vance at the end of the Blood Ties questline. You can also kill Vance to obtain his fully functional but very degraded Shishkebab.

Also, if you're going for the Shishkebab it's a good idea to get the Pyromaniac Perk, which will also increase the Shishkebab's melee damage and boost fire damage from 2 to 3 damage per second for 5 seconds.

Just thought I'd offer some friendly advice there, hope this proves useful.

For reliability and pure gooey awesomeness, I gotta hand it to my trusty A3-21 Plasma Rifle... that thing has probably killed more Super Mutants than the rest of my arsenal combined. It also pretty much wiped out the Enclave singlehandedly in the Broken Steel quests, and is always my go-to weapon should I encounter any Deathclaws. :)
I also love the Tesla Cannon - every time I see an Enclave Vertibird, I can't resist the Urge the OHKO it and blow it out of the sky with a deadly-accurate Lightning Bolt. Not to mention the sheer power of it - 120 power at max energy weapons / condition, AND 25 aftershock damage? Thank you Bethesda! :D
Finally, my favourite non-energy weapons are the Victory Rifle (knocking enemies to the ground with each and every headshot never gets old) and the MIRV (for the LOL factor) :D

Vengeance. If you can afford to run it, it just minces EVERYTHING! Also helped by my maxed out energy weapons.

The thingymajig custom scoped magnum (blackhawk?) and the Victory Rifle are also pretty damn sweet for liberating people's heads from their torsos at range.

I have the special plasma rifle you get from
The android if you choose to help him escape from Zimmerman
When he gave it to me it was in full condition and did about 32 damage per shot. I was ripping apart super mutants.

However, I've started a new game (haven't finished the storyline yet, just felt like a new game for some reason) where I chose to specialize in melee weapons. I'm trying to get the Shishkebab schematic and parts.
Playing Fallout 3 or NV as a melee fighter is just so satisfying.

Also /Tron highfive

Actually in Fallout 3, the Gatling Laser and it's variants, such as the Vengeance, run off the Big Guns stat.

Hmmmmmm. Well I had that maxed too so probably didn't notice. I shall bear that in mind for future playthroughs though, thanks for the info.

Oddly mine is the humble Hunting Rifle, that thing has killed more Supermutants, Robots and killer insects than any other item in my inventory. The only thing it currently sucks against are Radscorpions, but I have a handy dandy sledgehammer for them.
Same here. It's the most reliable weapon I ever had in the game aside from Lincoln's Repeater.
