So I was wondering if anyone has a favorite fanfiction that they had read over the years and liked? What were your favorites?

I've come across a few I've enjoyed. Favourite would be Renegade Reinterpretations. A Mass Effect fic which basically has "what if instead of meeting the Turians at 314, it was the Batarians?". Does not end well for anyone. It's basically 3/4ths backstory for the main plot set during the games, and there's no such thing as a human paragon.

Funny thing is, I like the lore of Mass Effect, but don't have much love for the games.

Jar Jar in Warhammer 40000 is pretty funny. A huge multi way battle breaks out between the various forces on a planet, and Jar Jar manages to screw things up for all of them.

Magus523 is the only author that I follow on a regular basis, I've seen him get better and better with each story (he himself admits that his first few are not really up to snuff and plans to completely remake his first novelization, Chrono Trigger, soon). By extension the entire 'Legacy of Metal' written by him and his associates is an excellent collection overall.

Secondary would be The Lion of Ivalice by Obsidian Dawn, and third would be an old and exhaustive novelization of Warcraft II by Jeremy. My own stuff can't compare with these even though I'm older.

Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet was very good. Oh yes I went there.

If we're talking modern stuff, though, Angel of Music is a self-published book of Phantom of the Opera fanfiction, which I bought years ago. It contains three stories, one good, one excellent, and one very good.

And I do love Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality.

It Could Be Worse, [https://www.fanfiction.net/s/6211518/1/It-Could-Be-Worse] a TF2 fanfic. I went out looking for SniperxSpy stories on a lark, and did not expect to find one of the most well written romance stories I have ever encountered in all forms of written prose, including novels. Even if you don't like gay character pairings I highly, HIGHLY recommend this story. The dynamic and buildup is just so natural, not at all contrived and rushed like so many stories like it. It is an absolute gem and a beautiful love story I cannot praise enough.

Only one fanfic has earned my respect,Rosario Vampire: A Confession and A Vampire. This fanfic pretty much had Rosario+Vampire end in a way that left me happy instead of the open ending we got. I'm sure I could easily find some other FFs, that finish anime and manga that ended openly. I just have to search for them.

I have two that I have read recently that I liked.

He Who Fights Monsters; a Rosario Vampire fic where the main character didn't meet his main love interest on the first day. He basically ends up killing a bunch of students in self defense, including the aforementioned love interest.

Shinji and Warhammer 40k; a what if? scenario where Shinji Ikari found a case of 40k miniatures with the rules one day as a kid. He gains considerable confidence (and possibly schizophrenia; the miniatures talk to him) and paves the way to becoming the savior of mankind, while trying to avoid becoming the God-Emperor of Mankind. Entertaining and pretty good.

My favourite was a fanfiction trilogy with a Harry Potter/ Draco Malfoy pairing, where it turns out the dark side is actually light and light is the dark, well, some of the people in the light are dark. It was really well written, the plot was well thought out, everything was explained and had good reasoning. The characters were all developed well, and in a way the writer stayed true to many aspects of the characters. The writer stuck to their style and their story. I was incredibly impressed by it but I can't remember the name of it.

My current favorite is Firebirds. [http://archiveofourown.org/works/463146]

If you're a comic geek: It's Avengers vs X-Men done right. Neither side gets handed the idiot ball, the stakes are appropriately high, and Hope Summers actually comes across as a sympathetic character.

If you're not a comic geek: Epic X-Men/Avengers cross-over fanfic in which there is death, sacrifice, and some truly kick-ass battle sequences. Don't sweat the details, just enjoy the ride.

There was this TF2 version of 'I have no mouth but I must scream' called 'With Apologies to Harlan Ellison' http://dotchan.com/?p=1709 which was great.

My all-time favourite work of fanfiction is The Uncertain Future, by 'DragonKight - Beta 26', which is based on Christopher Paolini's Inheritance Cycle (Do a search for it on Fanfiction.net, I can't link directly because of NSFW content towards the end.)

Anybody who's read the books will know that the ending of the series was rather disappointing. The series ends on a bittersweet note, leaving a whole bunch of unanswered questions and not giving the characters any closure. The story picks up shortly after the series finishes, the series' protagonist, Eragon gets magically transformed into a Dragon, and the story follows him as he adapts to the change and slowly forms a relationship with his dragon partner, Saphira. (I know what you're thinking, yes its an NSFW romance story involving two dragons, but please bear with me.)

In all my years of reading fanfic, I've never found another story as well written as this story. Despite the main characters not being human, their relationship is powerful and gripping, the author does a brilliant job of slowly building up the tension between the characters until it reaches breaking point in a heart-stopping scene. The author also does a great job of pulling together little details from the whole series to provide a much more satisfying conclusion to the story than the original author managed.

And now the tragic part: The story's unfinished. The last chapter was posted March 2013, and there's been no sign of the author since then. So, what we have is the story up to just after our characters confess their feelings and spend their first night together, which is still well worth the read, even if it's lacking a satisfying conclusion.

I have read quite a few fanfics in my time and I must say that I have been impressed with quite a few.
1. Sage, by Digitize 27 Naruto
2. Truth Revealed, by Fallen Crest Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood (Unfinished but updates usually twice a month)
3.Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality by Less Wrong Harry Potter
4.Guardian, by Mr Arkham Dragonball Z
5.Ninja of the Kai's, by DragonMasterFlex DBZ & Naruto Crossover
6.Uzumaki among the Dunes, by PudgyPudge Naruto
7. Bring the Hammer down, by PudgyPudge Naruto
8. Bodyguard of Azula, by Deus Swiftblade Avatar the last Aribender & Naruto crossover

These are the ones that I can think of at the moment but they are all fantastic in my own oppinion. Too bad that NotK's is a dead fic though. I truly recommend that you give these stories a try, especially NotK's or TR if you need a good laugh.

Double Rainbow - Director's Cut! By ProBrono, based on My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

I enjoy comical and parodic fics, I have read hundreds of them, and I can say with absolute confidence that this is the funniest shit I have ever found.

It is more than insane enough to count as a crack fic, yet so incredibly well written it could almost pass as a script for an unaired episode of MLP! Everypony is completely in character and everything, at least for the most part (though there is some shipping).

Oh yeah, and don't worry - there's nothing more explicit than an occasional mention of ponies making out.

EDIT: Honorable mention to Frigging Fantasy VII [https://www.fanfiction.net/s/1381051/1/Frigging-Fantasy-VII], by Bleys Maynard1. This is nothing less than the complete story from Final Fantasy VII - rewritten into a crack fic! I honestly believe that the word 'epic' can be used here without exaggeration.

You did not just ask that question. Whelp, time to get out my huge favorites list.

Anything from ShakespeareHemmingway. The guy, probably intentionally, writes some of the best so-bad-it's-good fanfic out there, usually starring Garfield (yes, that Garfield) as, well, practically Duke Nukem on steroids. But the thing that really makes it worth a read is that, unlike the usual troll-fic, this one is actually not laden with horrible grammar but instead uses an incredibly peculiar and consistent sentence-structure that somehow makes the entire thing even more hilarious.
For example, he always uses a person's full name and each line of his dialog is followed by a descriptive attribution, e.g.: "You are scum! - Jon Arbuckle declared with declaration."
Albeit somewhat tiresome, all of his works are absolutely hilarious.

But if we are about non-ironically good fanfic, I would recommend the first third or so of Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality. It is a "what if?" scenario where Aunt Petunia managed to convince Lily to brew her a beauty potion, which turned her entire life around to the point where she eventually married an university professor instead of Vernon Dursley, so in this universe Harry grew up to be a prodigious rationalist and humanist in a loving household... and then the letter from Hogwarts shows up and hilarity ensues.

The fic does a pretty good job at deconstructing the magicalness of the Harry Potter universe without being overly malicious and all the while being absolutely hilarious. Sadly as the fic goes on it slowly becomes more and more detached from the HP universe and introduces a lot of author appeal elements, like introducing Ender's Game style wargames or slowly twisting the story into a soapbox for his "overcoming mortality" agenda, such as when it turns out that the Potter family has been researching immortality, or when Harry kills a Dementor by realizing that a Dementor is supposed to represent death (which is untrue by Rowling's admission, btw) and thus Harry being the first one to overcome death, and so on and so forth.

The first part of the story is still a great read, both thought-provoking and funny, you just have to be able to recognize the point at which it becomes a silly author-tract and leave it there.

Well, it's going to be kind of difficult since I don't think I can post many of them here.

Or rather, any of them. Because they're all hardcore porn.

Because I like erotic fanfiction. A lot.

But if I had to mention a group, I'd say Mass Effect and Warhammer 40k would be my 2 favorites. [sub/]cultist-chan unf unf unf[/sub]

EDIT: Oh I thought of a non-porn one that I love! My Immortal is absolutely glorious even without being a Harry Potter fan and the dramatic readings on YouTube are some of the best videos on the internet.
