First rule: No story that ends after one book/movie.

Second rule: Must be in the fantasy OR science fiction genre.

Third rule: Only ONE. If you have more than one favorite, fine. But please pick ONE.

(Sorry if that seems redundant, but I'm new to this forum and my last few forums left me with a bitter taste in my mouth about the users.)

Mine would be A Song of Ice and Fire.

Really good storytelling, compelling, the characters are real, it goes beyond good vs. evil into a nice little gray area for all characters, and most importantly it keeps my attention without the need for some big epic battle every book.

Edit: Can chose a book/TV show/movie.

Lord of The Rings, it's just amazing.

I don't read much fantasy/sci-fi other than Tolkien and H.G. Wells.

Either. Books or TV. Or movies.

As long as it's fantasy or science fiction.

If we're talking series of books then I'll go with the Riddlemaster of Hed trilogy by Patricia A. McKillip. Though honorable mention should go to Tolkien and LeGuin for the Middle Earth and Earthsea series' respectively.

LORT till the day I die, also, one of the few times where the film stays quiet true to the book
( I know they left quiet a bit out but the extended DVD version is like 12 hours long anyway)

oh, and leppelin wrote a song abou the series, how can that not be a good point?

Why does everyone say Lord of the Rings?

I found that series dry, really. I finished it, but it didn't go on my favorites or anything. Just too hard to get into that world for me.

Guess it's all in opinion.

I guess the thread is about books?

In that case, my favorite is "The Hyperion Cantos" (Hyperion & The Fall of Hyperion) by Dan Simmons.

The first book is a bit of a collection of stories with a bit of a main storyline going on, and the second book is the conclusion of said story.

And...well, these two books feature everything great about Science Fiction:

-Cool Action
-Bizarre Settings and Technologies
-Deeper Thoughts and Stories about Science Fiction Themes and Concepts
(Everyone who has seen "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" should take a look at the first book for a darker take on reverse aging)
-Varied Characters
-Freaky Enemies (or are they??)
-A fairly epic conclusion
-Lots of references to poetry....oh wait, does not belong here, but is interesting, if a bit too overdone over the course of the books

All around a great read that is as engaging as it is entertaining.

EDIT: Just read that it is not only about books, so

TV: Firefly - It's really, really great, still it pains everytime that this series was canceled so early (Second is the new Battlestar Galactica, if they get the ending right)

Movies: I could cheat a bit and say Serenity (The Epic Movie Adaptation and Conclusion to Firefly)....but....huh, Sci Fi Movie Series...that isn't easy...

My favorites are only two main ones: Ruroni Kenshin and Trigun. The best I have ever seen.

Probably the Ender series by Orson Scott Card. The Bean series was OK, but it starts to feel like work finishing the whole series. The Ender series I had no trouble finishing.
