Mine is Street Fighter because it has an easy-to-learn but hard-to-master move system and it has a deceptively complex moveset which seems simple at first. Also most button-mashing players (which take all the fun out of the game) get whooped by nearly any capable player. Lastly, Hadouken!

Super Smash Brothers (melee's best).

For the hilarity and the fact you get to beat up your most hated nintendo characters.

Guilty Gear...fast-paced..looks great...takes a ton of training to master (RC, FRC, Dust-loops etc)...pure awesomeness!

There was a japanese one for the PS1 that I loved, faster than tekken and with loads of characters, that I was sure was called High School Rumble... I can't seem to find it though...

So I'll second Smash Brothers instead.

edit/ Rival Schools! Thats what it was called, team ups between characters for moves, different themes (jocks, greasers, teachers, etc.). And as I said, played 5 times faster than anything else that was out... a pure adrenaline beat em up

Street Fighter, because its the only fighting game I've ever played and will ever play. And also because button mashing doesn't work.

Soul Calibur. So much fun while intoxicated.
And I suppose while not intoxicated.
Although the "Hey lets add random people that make less sense than the rest of the game" were kind of annoying. I.E: Spawn, Link, Heihachi, Darth Vader, Yoda, and the Apprentice. All silly, especially Link and Yoda. Otherwise, easy to mash, but a bastard to best

Dead or Alive, because underneath all the scantily clad women there is actually a damn good fighting game.

Yeah, button mashing just ruins a fighting games, but thankfully button mashers get pulverized on street fighter.

Marvel vs. Capcom was also very good. Akuma vs. Wolverine= WIN.

Really? Really? God no. Brawl is, by far, the best. Melee's AI gets waaay too cheap (they corner me and edge camp), the characters are overpowered, and the graphics seem too plain.

Wait, the graphics are the same! Which is just sad for the Wii but Melee has better gameplay but Brawl has Solid Snake so it's a toss up.

its gotta be tekken, its gotta be the most balanced fighting game out, any everyone has differant techniques and styles, its also easy to kill button bashers if you are any good.

Mortal Kombat is one of my alltime favourites, although the new one kinda sucked, and the one before wasn't nearly as good as the rest of them...

next is Xmen vs. Street fighter and anyone who denies it is not worthy of life

Dead or Alive would be on the third place because.....hell, I don't know, but I have good memories of it

No, the graphic are quite better. It may not seem that because they only detailed things that needed to be detailed, and most things didn't. The gameplay is pretty much the same, just Brawl has more game types. Stamina (a personal favorite), mini, spicy, metal, etc. And you can mix them. That's much more than Melee had. So yes, Brawl is better.
