I like games that let me fly by my own power (i.e. no plane). In fact, any game that allows me to do so usually wins major points, even if the game itself is terrible.

Super Mario 64 was the first game where I really felt like I was flying. It *ruled*.

I'd say Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe was my favourite flying game; not super-realistic, but the combat was both fun and rewarded real-world tactics... and at the time the graphics were unbeaten.

There's a game called 'Cloud' which I believe is still a free download that encompasses nothing but flying around.

The original Wing Commander is my favorite of all, followed by Ace Combat 6 (Never played the first 5 Ace Combats).

I still have fond memories of Chuck Yeager's Air Combat
I have vauge memories of me playing that as a kid... D:

As for favourite "Flying Game" I'd say either IL-2 Sturmovik, or Lock On

I've not played that but I was gonna say Secret Weapons Over Normandy. Wasn't at all realistic either but it was quite a laugh.
I always liked the idea of Flight Simulator but ultimately never really had the patience and just ended up doing stupid stuff like trying to barrel roll a 747 or deliberately ignoring the Air Traffic Controller in the hopes of causing a horrific accident.
Isn't IL-2 Sturmovik supposed to be coming to console? Havn't heard much on that recently, hope it's still in the works.

I really liked Ace Combat 4: Shattered Skies.

Unfortunately I sold it, and I loved the game so much. Even my friend was surprised that I sold it!

TIE Fighter.
That game was lots of fun!

But for me it'll have to be Tyrian... 2D side scrolling flying game. (you were in a space ship and that flys so it counts for me god damnit!)

Heroes of the Pacific & Blazing Angels 2.

I much prefer WW2 flying games than modern games with lock on & missile etc. I like getting in close & machine gunning enemies rather than the point & click of modern missiles, leading a target seems more skilful.

I could never get into Ace Combat, but I did quite enjoy Heatseeker on the PS2.

I'd really like to see a WW1 flying game, like a modern (generation wise) update of Wings [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wings_(series)]. I loved the narrative & atmosphere of the original.
