which games (good or bad) do you think had the best intro's? the kind that get you really exited or set the mood perfectly, here's my examples:

Dead space: zooms out on the video then goes through the seaquence of crashing into the ship sets the mood perfectly

Bioshock

Fallout new vegas: awsome intro, really gets you excited, Fallout 3 works great too

half life 2: not only g-mans speech but also arriving at the train station seeing the kind of world your in

oblivion: Didn't care for the game that much, but it had a really nice intro

Borderlands: average game but the intro is really cool,

007: Nightfire has a pretty cool intro that also serves as a tutorial. It takes the form of the pre-title sequence that you would find right at home in any Bond film.

I feel like its almost pretentious to answer Deus Ex in any thread like this, but I'm gonna say it anyway.

The intro to that game really gave you a feel for how dark and twisted the plot was going to get. Also, they reference Thomas Aquinas, which you won't find many video games doing.

Hmm...a tough call. I think I might go with Final Fantasy X, if only for the sheer shock value. The voice acting combined with the graphics absolutely bowled me over (plus, its the first RPG I can think of to be told en media res, which I thought was kinda cool). The Zarnarkand Blitzball scene was absolute magic for the time.

Other notable entries:

Final Fantasy XII. The pre-menu attract scene has absolutely gorgeous music, and the opening cutscene is very well done.
Lost Odyssey. Tons of action, very pretty, and really sets up the big mystery of the game with Kaim's immortality.
Deus Ex. More for its complete lack of an opening. It doesn't bother to introduce anything at all, but there are so many tiny details (the headless statue of liberty, the completely unacknowledged robot) that contribute so much more to the setting than a monologue would.
Street Fighter II The music never fails to pump me up.

Doom had the best intro ever.

.....okay seriously I think FEAR is my favorite intro, it set the mood perfectly for the game.

This always made me tear up a little bit due to the overly emotional song combined with seeing everything around the main character fade away.

Not gonna say that I think its the best, just because I've basically only played this for the past three weeks, but I could sit through the Persona 3 Portable intro again and again and again and again...

You pretty much nailed all three of my favorites right here. I also liked Red Dead Redemptions, Half Life 2's, and legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker's (the story book with the flutes).

yeah, the fallout intros, there's the always awesome "war, war never changes" and then you get a recap of shit that went wrong and if you're lucky a nice little intro movie with vault boy, fallout 2, which is still my favourite game, has the best of the series.

other than that, really any intro that manages to set the tone of the game in 2 min, and i love the games that just throws you into a hopeless situation, a good example is machinarium (the most breath taking beautiful game ever) you start by being thrown into the graveyard (or junk yard) and you have to get your limbs back or live forever as a head in a pile of junk, that is awesome.

The series of races and clips of FMV at the beginning of NFS: Most Wanted always struck me.

"This guy is a prick, but I can't shoot him. I'll have to humiliate him".

Oh the rage.

Although, if you're looking for beautiful, go classic:

I don't to sound like a fanboy but I really liked Halo Reach's intro - seeing the helmet of the spartan you just customized lying on a scorched earth with a bullet hole through it. It set the mood of the entire game - the inevitability of your defeat.

I think Crackdown 2 had a great one! Very, very well done cutscene and tutorial.
Oh and CoD4 has the only tutorial I've ever played multiple times willfully because it's just so damn fun!
