Now see out of all the games I've played, the most memorable game music has always come from AOE 2, I dont even know why either!

The Ys series has some of the most awesome music I've heard in any game series. Has a varying styles of music, but it's most notable stuff is like a mix of like 80's power metal and symphonic music.

My favorite theme in the entire series:

The absolute best song I've ever heard in a video game is Baba Yetu which is the song playing during the menu of Civilization 4. Note it was actually composed for the game. Morrowind has amazing music too, some of which songs extraordinarily like a song from Cirque du Soleil Ka.

The only one I remember is Jechet's battle theme from FFX, "bom bom weeeeeee!"

The rest of the time I don't notice music in games, same for films and tv ... unless it's that annoying "build tension" heartbeat or something.

I didn't like Oblivion all that much...
but the opening theme was pure magic.

I remember just sitting there at the start screen and letting it play.

SO beautiful.

I have a list, that gets bigger with each one of these threads you guys are so awesome, um...

a mot of Sonic songs
a lot of Bioware game themes
Oblivion.
the duck tales song from above

Damn, I know I have more but I can't find my list...

Here's a few games with some particularly epic music, with a few examples per game (based on what I feel like):

Predictable, sure, but it's a game developed by Nintendo - they always make high-quality stuff. [sub](italics to make sure nobody misinterprets me)[/sub] Brilliant game, epic soundtrack. Best possible combination.

The indie gift that keeps on giving. Between a soundtrack like this, the eargasmic narrator, an excellent plot and gameplay that's as varied as you want it to be...

Y'know, sometimes, these songs were the only things that got me to try, try again. And it was totally worth it the one time I beat level 6-5. Never did finish this, though...

Yeah, I know it's cheating to post an entire series, but how am I meant to choose? Sure, the games may have more in common than each Call of Duty; at least good music is a common trait as well.

Did I leave this long enough to not get caught at the bottom of a page and be eternally ignored? (Edit: God damn it.)

Morrowing/Skyrim

Morrowind was always my favorite Elder Scrolls Soundtrack, so you can imagine how much fun I was having when it turned out that Skyrim's soundtrack was all re-done versions of Morrowind's soundtrack! Some might say that they could have done better, but fuck them. I don't want another Oblivion Pirates of the Niben soundtrack (because it reminds me of Pirates of the Caribbean... And in Cyrodil, there's that Niben Bay in just south of the Imperial... Never mind...). I liked it, sure, but I just liked Morrowind's/Skyrim's a lot more!

Also, Saint's Row the Third. I love a game with a soundtrack featuring tracks by Deadmau5, Marilyn Manson, The Black Dahlia Murder, Amon Amarth, Dethklok, the ATHF theme, Mozart, and... Dammit, who did Blue Danube? That guy. I feel that my epic drive-by fests are made all the classier when an 18th century Waltz is playing over the radio.

Offhand? The cornered pieces in Ace Attorney. They're pretty good on their own right, but they're absolutely incredible when you're pressing the assault against the prosecution's case. It's the perfect backdrop and works wonders for the game's atmosphere.

Of course, I'm also quite fond of the orchestral variants (all of which are compiled in the following video)

Other favorites include Final Fantasy VIII's Liberi Fatali, Kingdom Hearts II's Fate of the Unknown, and Von An, Gra'tua Cuun, and Ka'rta Tor in Star Wars: Republic Commando.

(Yes, those are three songs in that last video. They work well together, don't they?)

Most Zelda songs. Especially the ones in Skyward Sword. I'm hard-pressed to find one specifically that I like the most, so here's a few.

The Skyrim theme really is just about my favorite soundtrack piece ever. Sadly, Zenimax slapped copyright claims on all the Youtube versions, but I'm sure you've all heard it by now anyway. The brass, my god...

And recently replaying Borderlands, I've found the music to be both excellent and very unique. It's evocative of the desert environment without resorting to the obvious cowboy and Arabian themes.Oh, and Jesper Kyd's work on the Assassin's Creed series, especially in the second game, is just beautiful.

Oh man, the Age of Empires theme...it popped into my head immediately upon seeing your post, and I haven't played the game in years. Sounds of my childhood right there. I remember popping the game disc into my CD player and just listening to the music.
