I absolutely detest adventure games but the walking dead won me over
the walking dead from telltale is one of my favorite games but would say it very different compared to old school adventures games.

Telltale discarded the puzzles and point and click mechanics by just bringing them down to its basics. In its place they there are qte's. Both traditional actiony one and high pressure conversations. I would personally call it's big improvement. It allows the game to focus on story and writing. Good writing is the only thing that can get me to tolerate the boring gameplay of an old adventure games and even then I still have use a walkthough.

I'm generally not a big fighting games fan, but man I love me some Mortal Kombat. I love the brutality of the combat, the characters and the universe the game has established, and it feels pretty easy to pick up compared to a lot of other fighting games.

I generally don't like turn-based games that emphasize shooting over melee (don't know why) but I really enjoyed X-Com: Enemy Unknown. It was fast-paced, tense, and handled the cover mechanic so well that it sort of made me wonder why other games hadn't done it so easily.

I'm pretty apprehensive about action-rpg's. More often than not it seems it's a mediocre action game with some bare-bones rpg-esque features, like some arbitrary perks, or a linear skill tree (skill sticks, I call them). Games like the Bethesda Fallout and Elder Scrolls games could be a hell of a lot better, and I've never understood why people are so enthralled about the Bioshock games.

The Mass Effect series has been an exception to me though. It has its problems, more than I'd care to list, but the sheer amount of depth the in-game world has is pretty amazing, and has some damn good writing despite the fact that it's not executed in the best way.

Well there's a few genres:

I usually HATE HATE Tower Defense games, they are overly simplistic button masher games that devolve into a "how fast can you click the button" games in later levels...

Unholy Heights however is a very addictive tower defense style game that blends in an apartment management sim and it's really fun (and really cheap too). I just really enjoy the dynamics the game offers!

I usually can't stand First Person Shooters they all feel same-samey and all the apparent innovation in the genre is totally lost on me because playing one is like playing any other.

Far Cry 3 is the exception here, it's open world and free-form objectives that don't railroad you from one place to another is a very welcome thing. I really enjoy the game and it's got a lot of charm to it. I didn't include games like Fallout 3 or Borderlands because those feel more RPG with shooter elements than FPS.

Puzzle Games kind of throw me off, they always seem repetitive and boring even as the difficulty increases it's just about how quick your brain can repeat the same patterns over and over.

Scribblenauts Unlimited is anything but repetitive, it's pretty simple as far as puzzle games go but it's like Zen, you always feel relaxed, there's no twitch gameplay, and the puzzles all have multiple solutions, I can't get enough of it!

Never was the least bit interested in racing games, but I had some good times with MX vs ATV Unleashed/Untamed. Too bad the series went straight down the drain.

MOBAs, I loathe MOBAs. But I love Heroes of the Storm.

Heroes of the Storm would be my favourite game from a genre that I absolutely despise. The focus on PvE objectives and critical team battles that can turn the tide of the match several times in a single round makes the game exceptionally fun and satisfying. Where in other MOBAs the best strat is to YOLO for maximum personal glory and hope you can carry your team to victory, everyone in a team on HotS shares experience and levels up together. Add in the option to obtain mercenaries, golems and even mini-bosses to join your team and you have a really exciting game to both play and watch. The talent system also makes for a far more interesting and flexible system than items and upgrades where one wrong purchase ccan leave you with a gimped character for the rest of the game.
Oi! I second that.
I absolutely can't stand MOBAs in general, but was accepted to alpha so i gave this a try and was surprised how enjoyable it was. This one's a keeper.

Street Fighter 2 Turbo

I kind of hate fighting games, but something about this one just makes me love it. Heck, I'm not even good at it, I just find the characters fun and interesting. My favourite character is Mr. Stretchy-arms (no, I can't be bothered to look up his name).

I'm not a big fan of JRPGs, but Ni no Kuni really struck a chord with me. It might have to do with its Studio Ghibli feel.

FPS is a genre I generally avoid, but Bioshock: Infinite was one of my biggest surprises from the last few years. Granted, it has some very unique elements to it aside from the action itself.

Not a whole game in itself, but I loved the astraria in Dragon Age: Inquisition, even though I thoroughly deplore puzzles in games.

Captcha: play again. Fitting.

I generally hate Text based choose your own adventure games as most of the are so badly written with so few choices , similar endings , etc but i loved Coc.... Its the best text based adventure i have ever played .
What is Coc? (My mind is stuck in a dirty place right now and can't get out.)

I am gonna have to second Smash Bros. for fighting games. As well, I like Marvel Nemesis and X-Men Evolution. I am always interested in playing fighting games with super heroes though but I don't always stick with them. I still need to check out injustice.

As well, I don't care for shooters but Modern Warfare made me care about it enough to buy like 3-4 sequels and I actually liked Battlefield 2142 a lot despite not knowing anyone else who played it.

Oh yeah, and the only sports game I like is MLB The Show.

I am not a fan of Hack N' Slash Games.
Or Spectacle games, for that matter.
But goddamn it if the DMC reboot didn't win me over. Fudging LOVED that game.

Believe me , your mind is not that far off....
Coc stands for corruption of champions......
Play that game on your own risk....
It's free on the creator's blog....
Play it to the end and something in you will change...

I tend to enjoy the occasional Burnout game, but this is probably because crashing is a mechanic rather than a punishment.
To note, I despise racing games. I hate racing missions which seem to sneak in my GTA or Assassin's Creed. I just had to race/follow a boat in Unity and failed it 8 times before finally getting it. I didn't 'lose' the boat. It was right there. I could literally see it. Hrerrrrgnnnnggg...
With GTA it makes sense sure, but I never beat GTA4 because one mission forced me to drive a clunky SUV and chase a guy through allyways and shit and I lost him constantly. Never got past that mission.

So, fuck racing.

But I'll play Burnout sometimes.

I don't generally like tactical RPGs or strategy games in general...games like X-Com: Enemy Unknown and Final Fantasy Tactics for example just didn't do anything for me. Then Fire Emblem Awakening happened and I'm seeing the light. I'm also feeling the hype for Codename S.T.E.A.M. which I'm convinced is connected to the Conduit series.

Racing games. I find them tedious, boring and the control sensitivity so hit and miss. Thats said, Need For Speed Underground was brilliant. I think it was probably the customisation and the soundtrack that made it shine.

I wasn't that into games with the Sonic physics engine. 2D or 3D, it was often too fast for me to react appropriately. Bubsy showed just how hazardous it can be in the wrong hands.

Freedom Planet fixed that by making it so enemies could only damage you with attacks instead of just collision damage. No more running into an enemy who just appeared on the edge of the screen while I was breaking the sound barrier.

Also, Sonic's running mechanics + Rocket Knight's boost ability was pure genius.

Metroid Prime 1-3, I generally do not like fps since they have to be overedgy, grey or militaristic. I like my games to have a little color and fantasy which 90% run counter to a game about shooting things.

RTS-esque: Odama, Projext X Zone, and Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance...
FPS-esque: Metroid Prime, Portal, and Mirror's Edge...

That's about it... Honorable mention to the Half-Life games, the Command & Conquer games, and the local multiplayer in the Call of Dudy games because I only play those games with [tangible] friends...

I don't much care for JRPGs, but Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is one of my favorite games. The fact that I played it just after finishing the very good bit very different Last of Us didn't hurt.

The genera.

FPS.

I dislike this genera for a verity of reasons, from the perspective it self to crap like CoD holding things back and preventing something that might be interesting from being made in the AAA space.

The Exception.

Metriod Prime.

They managed to perfectly capture the feel of a Metriod game in first person, from the exploration to the isolation. They even added a lock on to make up for the consoles handicap of 'no mouse', which given how the bosses are, you NEED a mouse, or lock on. eye balling it with manual aiming isn't gonna fly.
