the Healing Shiv, of course. And if you don't have one of those lying around, a magic wellness stick can work as well.

The Heart of Darkness from Blood Omens

"Reputed to have been ripped from the chest of the greatest vampire to have ever existed, Janos Audron, the Heart of Darkness restores vampiric unlife. Life is precious, Janos discovered - as it was torn throbbing and bleeding from his own body."
―Kain

Naturally there are THOUSANDS of these things.

Healing staves from RPGs, the ones where attacks heal your target. Why hitting someone with a staff would ever heal them seems off but fun none the less. Final Fantasy tends to have these.

Another one is candy. Who wants healthy nutrients when sugar clearly is the greatest thing when it comes to healing and candy is just full of the stuff. Secret of Mana has this as well as Chocolate and Royal Jam.

I'm personally a fan of healing through food items. Nothing takes the edge of being hacked near to death than a nice pastry!

In Duke Nukem Time to Kill, you could use the flamethrower on chickens, which cooked them, then gave you health.

In MDK there was a Safe, that granted you 150% Health, when you picked it up. The thing is, it also screamed and ran away from you when you approached it so you had to catch it. I miss when games were awesome like that.

Also, the health pickups from Rune were great, you, as a badass viking warrior that you were, drank mead, ate chicken legs and chewed the heads of lizards to regain health.

Nobody has mentioned "Ladies of the night" from GTA:VC? Really? Kill them and you get your money back too :0)

I like the whole concept of Humanity in Dark Souls. You can carry them around, use them to turn yourself a little bit less unsightly, zombified undead and you can even influence drop rates for looting/farming sprees if you so wish... oh, and you can heal yourself with them even when you run out of the standard Estus health recovery potion.

Best all-around health-restoring item, methinks.

From the pure aesthetics I've always been partial to the various random food items in, say, the classic Capcom games. Chicken, apples, meat on the bone, whole TV dinners - brilliant stuff.

I vote the good ol` painkillers from the Max Payne games. Lovely pills.
Yeah, loved the sound effect there, same with L4D, just downing a bottle of pills. I can't recall specifically the game I'm seeing it from in my head, but any game where you get a nice animation of hitting yourself with an autoinjector in first person is pretty cool- Oh, I think it was FarCry 2. Also in the same game, the whole malaria thing, I liked the animation of taking one of those scarce pills for which you're working your ass off.

Favourite healing thing?

Just look at those delicious, nuisances. They tend to follow you around attacking you regardless of how big you are making them the perfect stop gap meal for today's modern, hungry Tiger on the go.

...I may have been playing too much Tokyo Jungle.

I always thought the blood teardrop things in Planescape Torment were pretty cool.

However, the prize goes to the absolutely brutal first aid procedures in Far Cry 2.
