I can only reply to this thread with one comment:

"So many games, so little time!!!"

During the last year or two I rarely played games on release... then there's the bunch of games I've been meaning to play since forever. It makes me sad.

If I must contribute a title however, I played Portal about 12 months after its release when I started wondering how a physics puzzle game could win so many awards and get so many good scores. I found out the good way!

EDIT: I also remembered that it took me ages to finally play Warcraft III + Frozen Throne

I'm in the same boat as the OP with Psychonauts.
See, told ya so. :p How far have you gotten?
I beat it... but I'm sad that it didn't let me go back and try for 100 percent completion after the final boss, so I'll likely do it again sometime soon.
I just beat Napoleon. Now I'm doing the part with the cards. (Incidentally, everyone needs to play Psychonauts just for that bit; I love the black-velvet-and-blacklight graphics!)

As most of my games come from 3 for 2 pre-owned deals there are quite a lot that fall into this category:
Dragon Quest VIII
Beyond Good and Evil
Championship Manager 03-04 (just play it, then it will make sense)
Pro Evolution Soccer 5/08
Fable

I love cheap games and all of these provide(d) me with good entertainment even if BG&E has a completely duff soundtrack that glitches every 5 seconds.

System Shock 2 and KOTOR. Played them years after they came out and beat the crap out of the games that were big hits then

Considering I bought Morrowind in 2008 (after playing Oblivion to death), I think that's my winner right there.

I've had to retroactively revise my Game of the Year awards more than once due to something like that.

Red orchestra, Combat Arms, I was very late to the Total War series but I love it. I'm sure there are others out there.
