Mario 3. End of thread. It took everything the first game had introduced (we'll just ignore Doki Doki Panic for the sake of this thread) and refined it to pure gold. Super Mario World was good, but felt more like an update on what 3 had done than a huge step forward.
Actually I still love the original Super Mario Bros., but Super Mario World is very awesome too. I also really like Paper Mario (I recently started playing through it again on the VC) and its sequel The Thousand-Year Door.
