Favorite Metal Subgenre?

Since a good number of people here are metalheads, I thought it would be interesting to see what metal sub-genres we like. So, what is your favorite metal sub-genre? Who is your favorite band in that sub-genre?

For me, I would have to say symphonic metal is my favorite. Nightwish rules!


Oh yeah, if you could post a sample of the sub-genre so those of us who do not know what it sounds like could try it out, that would be cool...

Melodic Death Metal is by far my favourite. Although I quite like Industrial Metal and Gothic Metal too.

For My Pain... = awesomeness. They're slightly different to usual Gothic Metal though, so don't let this entirely base your opinion.

Straight up heavy is my favourite, with power and symphonic close behind. Not a huge fan of anything else.

I think my favorites are viking metal and folk metal. Also industrial and prog.

My preferred metal sub genres are either melodic death metal or good old thrash metal, I basically like the death grunts and screaming (not screamo screaming) with clean vocals mixed in.

My favorite bands are: Maiden, Arcturus, Dark Tranquility, Blind Guardian, Aggaloch, Summoning, Opeth...

I don't have a "favorite" genre. Metal itself is a genre unto it's own.
