Im a bit of a theater aficionado, do local theater stuff (or at least what i can do at 16 years old anyway) And i was thinking about what people thought their favorite show/play was? Be in Shakespeare or something newer what show has always held a special place in your heart?

For me its a three way tie between Rent, 13, and Seussical (the show i just got off of doing)

Rent: A very nice story and great music, very emotional

13: As a kid who is on the school scene still and has been 13 recently I cant help but love this show, alot of it rings true and the music is great!

Seussical: Its freaking Seuss, and its musical. Might not sound good on paper but it works really well and i loved being in it and i love the music and dancing, havin a hunch and Solla Sollew were especially my favs.

So whats your fav and why?

I never have a favourite of anything, as I find it hard to decide between things. But I listened to the Rent Original Cast recordings on Youtube and wasn't a massive fan. I saw it for the first time a couple of months ago done by the Musical Theatre Society at my university, and it was AMAZING! An incredibly emotional production, that moved me to tears twice (those who've seen it will know exactly where), and bear in mind I NEVER get moved to tears by anything, not since my uncle's funeral when I was 12. And I could barely stop singing La Vie Boheme and Rent afterwards, they were stuck in my head for ages. It also helps that I got a slight crush through the play on the girl who played Mimi...

Also, the film versions of Sweeney Todd and The Phantom Of The Opera are awesome, and I would dearly love to see both performed live on stage. It's worth noting that although I'm not as familiar with Stephen Sondheim's work outside Sweeney Todd, I am a massive Andrew Lloyd Webber fanboy...

I've never been to a play so i dunno if this still counts, but as far as plays that I've read goes my favourite would be The Importance of Being Earnest. I had to read it once for an english project and I was unhappy with it at first cause it wasn't the piece I wanted to cover, but I read and my opinion just turned right around. I found the whole thing to be enjoyable and even read it again outside of class. I also liked Hamlet, particularily the gravediggers and I still say 'argal' every once in a while.

Never heard of it, but if your into readable plays "Inherit the wind" was a good one, had to read it in school and loved it.

But when it comes to Shakespeare i always loved Macbeth, Hamlet annoys me for being overused as a theater joke

It's been forever and a half since I've even touched Macbeth. Maybe I'll read it again in the summer, I dunno. I'm for sure gonna read Othello tho cause I thought I would in school but we didn't. If I find Inherit the Wind online I'll check that out too.

Sweeney Todd is my most fave musical...though I really hated the film...a lot.
Honorable mention: Maybe go for a film musical like "All That Jazz" or go for a classic "West Side Story"

Play? That's tricky, there are so many good ones. I have a special place in my heart for The Crucible by Arthur Miller. So I'll go with that.

Honorable Mention? I do love some Harold Pinter, so maybe The Room? Oh, I also love Christopher Durang, so maybe "Sister Mary Ignatius explains it all for you?"

So much goodness on the stage! I'll stop now or I never will.

I was actually thinking of making this thread yesterday after seeing my cousin's school do Me and My Girl. I really liked South Pacific, so I would go with that for now. It's sappy and corny, but sometimes it's sad and music is just amazing.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.

It's a comedy about a slave named Psuedolus in Ancient Rome who tries to gain his freedom by setting his young master Hero up with a beautiful woman named Philia who is to be sold to the legendary warrior Miles Gloriosus. And since it's a comedy, it's no easy task.

All in the Timing is five one-act plays by David Ives. It's common to see it striped down to three though. My favorites are Variations on the Death of Trotsky, Words, Words, Words, and the Philadelphia. The first is about Leon Trotsky living out his final hours with an ax in his head that he's unaware of, the second is about three monkeys with type writers attempting to write Hamlet, and the last is about a man being stuck in a universe where he only gets the opposite of what he asks for. It's interesting to watch because the small cast has to play lots of different roles.

Le Bourgeois gentilhomme is about a business man in France trying to become a noble by marrying his daughter off to the son of a noble. It was written by Molière.

My favorite musical is an album being converted into a musical. Razia's Shadow by the band Forgive Durden. Its a concept album, and technically considered a musical, and it is absolutely brilliant.

And its being turned into an actual musical for onstage performances.

I have three favourite plays: Hamlet, Midsummer's Night Dream, and the Complete Works of Shakespeare Abridged. As for musicals, however, I am completely tied between 1776 (stated Modest-Lee, God help help us) and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.

I saw 39 Steps off-broadway last December. It was pretty much the best thing ever. I haven't seen too many musicals live, but Tim Burton's Sweeny Todd was pretty cool.

Oh, and Disney's The Lion King (disney movies count as musicals right?)
