Let's do a little experiment. Lovers of JRPGs generally put a Square Soft / Square Enix game at the top of their lists (FF6, Chrono Trigger, etc). So here's a question:

What is your favorite JRPG that was not designed or produced by Square?

Hmm... I have a tough time choosing between SMT: Persona 3 and Nocturne. Can we call it a tie?

Distant second would be the Disgaea series.

And to be honest, I like those better than anything square has produced anyway, except maybe Chrono..

There are so many great Enix games before the merger. Terranigma is definitely one of them.

I was also a fan of Tales of Phantasia, though the classic versions didn't see an American release.

Tales of Symphonia, Valkyria Chronicles, Fire Emblem, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, Earthbound, Persona 3.

Honestly, even though JRPG's are one of my main genres, there aren't that many Square games that excite me.

Tales of Vesperia felt more like a Final Fantasy game than Final Fantasy XIII did.

It was also awesome. If you can find it, take it, because it's pretty rare.

I still bear a grudge against Namco Bandai for refusing to localize the PS3 version.

Fire Emblem 7 is probably it.
Its also one of my all time favorite games.

Golden Sun 2, Super Robot Taisen OG Saga:Endless Frontier, and Spectrobes are also a few of my favorites.

The first one that pops into my mind is the Tales series (with emphasis on Tales of Symphonia) and Persona 3 (even though I only played about the first 15 or 20% of the game) rings loudly in my mind.

.hack//G.U. is also up there, though not as strongly as the other two.
