The music that lets the instruments do the talking. This has to be one of my favorite genres of all time. Escapist care to share your favorite musical pieces?

Hans Zimmer is my favorite of the genre. He did "Honor" for the Pacific's main theme. I think he also did pieces for Inception, but don't quote me on that. Fucking epic. All I can say.

So Escapist, Orchestral/Symphony any music you'd care to share?

EDIT: Cleared that up, thanks SckizoBoy.

Hans Zimmer is pretty awesome but he isn't exactly what I think of when I think of classical. I have a special place in my heart for Peter and the Wolf by Prokofiev because of when I was a kid.
I also like some of Tchaikovsky and Holst's The Planets. Also Adagio in G Minor composed by Giazotto. There are a ton of other good ones though. Those are just the most mainstream ones I could think of that I like.

The good Hans is not strictly 'classical'. Rather, he writes orchestral soundtracks that are stylized.

Anyway, 'classical' or 'Classical'? Cos there's a difference... for the latter, not a fan of the era... for the former, I enjoy baroque (Bach and Handel) and Romantic (Schumann and Beethoven, though perhaps his style of composition is up for debate...)

Tchaikovsky for sure...and Liszt. I could listen to Liszt all day. I went to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's presentation, and it was AMAZING.

Thanks for clearing that up actually, I knew when I created this thread that the title would be a little bit misleading.

I love many classical pieces, but if I had to pick a top three, #3 is the second movement of Beethoven's 7nth.
The sadness in the music is just beautiful.

#2 has to be Ode To Joy. It just makes me happy every time I hear it.
The chorus, the symphony, it just all blends seamlessly.

And my #1 Classical piece?

The first movement of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata.
Brilliant...... Simply brilliant.

Chopin's Revolutionary Etude [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mk1JQk90UbY] would be up there.

Another one is of course Richard Strauss Also Sprach Zarathustra [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-QFj59PON4], also known as Space Odyssey 2001 Theme

And as a third I'd for now put Carl Orff's O Fortuna [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GD3VsesSBsw] from his cantata Carmina Burana

Then again it's mostly for this moment. There is so much of great classical music picking just a few is hard.

If we're talking current-gen symphonic music (like soundtracks), hard to say.

Otherwise...well, can't really go wrong with Holst's The Planets (hot damn, do I loves me "Mars: Bringer of War"). And I still have lingering affection for Stravinsky, likely because Fantasia anchored "The Rite of Spring" in my mind.

If I don't want bombast, though...probably a toss-up between Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" and Debussy's "Clair de Lune." The latter is probably why I love calm piano music so much.

...that doesn't involve new age or visual novel soundtracks.

My favourite Orchestral theme is for Band of Brothers. It is an incredible piece of music which sets the mood perfectly as the intro. I also love the score for Moon. It's very atmospheric and gives you the feeling of isolation and paranoia.

Red Orchestra.

No, seriously. The soundtrack to that game is all orchestral brass and it's pretty damn cool.

I know, I usually hate when people post game soundtracks. But this one.. This one stands out:

Without a doubt one of my favourite soundtracks of all time.

The first time I listened to this I cried a single tear...

Also I'm having trouble naming a big production movie that doesn't have something from Zimmer in it. Favorite of his would likely be soundtrack for Sherlock Holmes.

sometimes it's kinda hard to hear over the fans. how often does a Symphony get drowned out by the audience?
