Shadowrun for the Sega Genesis. This game is amazing, a Sandbox for the ages. The story is there, but is an entire world of runs, shady deals and illegal firearms.

Dragon force on the saturn

Front mission 3 and Grandia on the playstation

all great RPG's and for the most part quite under-rated and unknown.
Front Mission 3 was pretty cool. I remember hijacking that giant mech with the particle beam weapon (I believe on the level where you had to protect the scientists).

Interestingly, it took me a long time to try a proper RPG. I think you could probably say that the first one I ever played was Pokemon Red, back in '96 or whenever, and I'd been playing videogames for a lot longer than that. Pokemon was just awesome. I'd never heard of it prior to playing the game, but I was hooked =) Pokemon white/black just came out yesterday, and I'm already into it =)

For those who don't consider Pokemon to be a 'real' RPG, then I guess it would be FF III, which I came back to retrospectively a few years ago. I loved how the characters and setting and story were so simple, but still so entertaining and imaginative. What happened to you, FF?

The first Western RPG I ever played was Dragon Age: Origins! True story =) My partner, however, has more experience with WRPGS, and I'm pretty sure he sold his soul to Baldur's Gate back in the day ;-P

So, something that I keep coming back to over and over is just how compelling 8-bit and 16-bit RPGs were/are.
Xenogears for the PS1. It was a pixel ho-down with graphics that (other than the cut scenes) felt like they were ported over from the SNES, but the story in insanely involved and brilliantly written, and I still replay it every year or so because it is just so damn good.

Also, best combat of any RPG ever, IMO. For those who haven't played, you have weak, medium, and heavy attack buttons, and you string them together - if you use the same string often enough, your heavy attack turns into a super move. You CAN spam the super moves, or you can choose to practice the less powerful combo of a future super move. Also you can fly around in giant mechs. Or, you can have one party member in a mech while the other two are on foot, and have them hallariously punch the enemy mechs to death while yours defends. I never get tired of those combos, no matter how many times I play the game.

Oh, and honorable mention to FF7. Not because of the plot, which is good, but for the Materia system, which is my favorite magic/skill system of any RPG.

And a second honorable mention to Planescape: Torment for having the best dialog / choice system of any RPG I've ever played. The combat was kinda clunky, and spells... just didn't work very well (bad habit of crashing the game) but really fun characterization and plot. Also Fall From Grace is one of my favorite characters ever.

Jade Empire by a long shot. It was my second Bioware RPG after KOTOR. the story, art, combat, and even the writing were brilliant.
Game and movie stories rarely surprise me, but this one caught me off guard. Even KOTOR's plot twist didn't quite get me. It was high on the list of probable outcomes. Seeing the Glorious Strategist's 20 year plan to take the throne come to fruition was amazing.

Also, I wish games with morality systems would justify the evil options better, like the "closed fist" options where you're not an asshole, but you're nobody's ***** and you believe that strife makes people stronger. Contrast with the first half of Fable 3. What possible reason could you have to be an asshole to the people who you are trying to gather support from? If you were truly evil, you'd bide your time, let others do the questing for you, steal the credit, and seize the throne in a bloody, unexpected coup.

Knights of the Old Republic

Besides Fallout 3, it's the only RPG that I've played the entire game from beginning to end. Not counting the pokemon games of course. But those aren't true RPGs anyway, so yeah, KOTOR.
