What is your favorite generation of Pokemon games? My personal favorite was 3rd generation (Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald). In 5th grade I clocked probably close to 700 hours on all of those games in total. Kyogre is by far my favorite legendary. Ninjask is my main lead on my team generally speaking, and he's my second favorite pokemon behind Gallade. They did everything right with that generation, including introducing the running shoes.

A little off topic but I really hope Yahtzee does a review of Black/White when they come out. Hearing him talk about how what will most likely be an exaggerated number of pokemon is far too much could be a good laugh.

First generation. All the way. Why? Because it was the best. You actually had to work to get anywhere (no little gimmicks like a walker that levels one Pokemon with your steps or anything like that). You had little help in the beginning, having nothing but your starter, some pocket money, and a roadmap.

Starting with close to nothing and building your team into one that can take on the greatest in the land. That's what it's all about.

3rd was my favourite too. Emerald was the last one that I owned, I never bought a DS. I sunk many, many hours into it. I especially loved the double battles and Rayquaza is insanely awesome :)

It also had my favourite starter ever (mudkip) although I didn't really like his evolutions.

I'm sorry but I don't really see how any of the other generations have been any different. The Pokewalker that came packaged with HeartGold/SoulSilver works exactly like the daycares that have been in every single game. Beginner's help is basically the exact same for every generation as well except you get a pair of running shoes for faster travel; and anyone who thinks that is a downfall is delusional.

For me the best is generation one... well none of the others had the missingno cheat.

If we had to choose for serious game-play though I would go with heart-gold and soul-silver. Taking the best bit of yellow (pikachu following you around) and expanding it was one of the best ideas the developers have had. Shame it's not going to be in black and white.

Second Gen was the peak in my opinion, but it didn't really die until fifth gen.
If you ask me about it, I will tell you that Pokemon only had four generations.

While I do love the first generation, especially having Pikachu walk around with you, I love the Gold/Silver/Crystal generation more. Why? Cyndaquil, and the legendary pokemon. Although they are a pain in the ass to catch.

I liked my HeartGold the most. It let me fool around with the later stuff only if I wanted to, and allowed me to focus on the 2nd gen goodness that gave me nostalgia pangs every time I thought about it. I never used the pokewalker or the weird addons like the Olympics thingy, but hey, maybe when I'm bored I'll go back to it.

1st gen wins purely because of the nostalgia factor.
2nd gen was almost as good, as it didn't differentiate from the original much in terms of gameplay, and gave you a whole new world to explore, as well as the previous one.
3rd gen was still good, had original new Pokemon, and had secret bases, something me and my friends sunk hours of gameplay into.

I do not disagree, the walker is pretty much the same as the daycare, yes. You do have to remember in Gen I, you could only house one Pokemon at a time. And you had to pay for that, as well, by level. I don't believe the Pokewalker works the same way (I've never actually played past Gen II and wouldn't know), but I don't expect that it would.

I just believe (again, from what I've heard) that the games are becoming less and less difficult due to all the extra gimmicks and tools to get a hold of. Running shoes, really? Whatever happened to being overjoyed at getting a bike?

It just lost its appeal for me. I'm sure there are others as well, but I wouldn't say anything against the later Gens. After all, it is basically the same game flecked with some variety.

I agree with the second gen thing, I loved that game so much!

For me it would have to be the 3rd generation. They are all good, but the R/S/E games are my favourite. It also introduced Shedinja, which is one of my favourite Pokemon, its also on my main Pokemon Battle Revolution pass.

Also heres a video thats slightly on topic. Somehow.

I got into Pokemon in the 3rd gen, and I'm gonna have to go with that one. To this day, Sapphire is by far the game I've put the most time into: 380+ hours (and counting; I'm still pal-parking Heart Scales and stuff over to SoulSilver). Except for Latios, I have completely filled the Hoenn dex in that game, and I have something like 10 lv100's, all legit.

I was SUCH a noob for about 320 of those hours, though. I had no idea about base stats, EV's, IV's and Nature and all that stuff, and when I heard about the physical/special split of 4th gen, I was like, "wait, you mean this wasn't already implemented?" DX

EDIT: oh and Secret Bases FTW! My favourite gen-unique feature by far!

Second Generation. The fixes to the pokemon types from the first game (namely Ghost) were crucial, and the addition of the passage of real time was really cool for me when it came out. I've played that generation probably more than any of them.

For me, the first generation had the best pokemon, although im gonna have to plump for Heart Gold and Soul silver, mainly because all the mechanics are pretty well balanced (anyone remember how annoying wrap was in gen 1??), you can actually SEE the pokemon follow you around (which is totally pointless but somehow just amazing...Marowak following me will stick with me forever), the phone system hasn't been bettered in any pokemon game since (WHY I have no idea)...and you got to go around the original world map when you beat the elite four, it was nice to see hte world after we had left it for soooo long.

1st -> Best by far in nostalgia, enjoyment, etc. Never gets old.
2nd -> A little less nostalgic, yet a little more creative. Just as great as the first gen.
3rd -> Completely forgettable. Things really went downhill here. I could never get into the actual game, although 386 play was great for competitive battle.
4th -> A slight return to form. Nowhere near the first two generations. It's an improvement, but not enough for me to care.
5th -> No idea.

i Rly enjoyed the 3rd(Ruby/Sapphire) i think i enjoyed that one more then the first and second(i never played 4th)

But i did like that in 2nd gen i could go back to Kanto, that is the one thing that i wish Ruby/Sapphire had.

the 2nd one for me, i just found the ability to go to both Johto and Kanto made the game a lot more fun and longer. i would love to be able to go to Kanto in the new one but i doubt it really

My favorite region is Johto, even though I played the Kanto ones for the GB first I still liked the idea of the first game to have new poke'mon so I feel Johto is even more Nostalgic than the original and had/has some of my favorite poke'mon to date. I also hope Yahtzee reviews the new upcoming Poke'mon games I don't THINK he'd like it but I'd like to KNOW what he thinks of the series as a whole.
